Blind Guardian " A Twist in The Myth " The thought of a new album from the legendary Blind Guardian had the same effect of a small tropical storm: it blew everything away and had everybody in uproar. Without an album for four years and somewhat criticized for embracing a more progressive path as opposed to their more aggressive past, “A Twist in the Myth” had a lot of people mouth watering, yet with some reservations. I was quite eager in my despair to listen a wilder Hansi, after a “Touched By The Crimson King” that left me with some apathy, and a version of Blind Guardian with a bit of their past, perhaps something like what Thomen Stauch did wigh Savage Circus and their powerful “Dreamland Manor” . What we have here is actually a bit of both worlds. The music is progressive enough, but Hansi sounds quite more powerful than in the project with Jon Schaffer and we don't have a lack of powerful riffing and aggressive soloing with some of the speed/thrash of past times to give them weight and character. The production is clear and the guitars greatly benefit from it, remaining audible and potent all along the album. At the same time although we get multi layers of sounds and voices, it's all done without loosing the thread of it all and all the grandiose and epic choruses the Germans had us used to are all there. It's the part of the music closer to Savage Circus . Clearly, Hansi's voice didn't suffer from the mishaps he had, because he does sound better than ever, also thanks to the faultless production. This is exactly what I needed to hear in this album and that I found lacking in D & W . Hat's off to Hansi! With a lot reminding me of the greatness of masterpieces like “Nightfall in Middle Earth” , certainly my favourite of them all, but with the more epic sound of later works like “A Night At The Opera” , the mixture is sublime. From the start with the amazing “This Will Never End” , going through “Otherland” , the band shows us how refreshing this album is and, up until the time we get to the grandeur of “Turn The Page” , perfect combination between the old and the new Blind Guardian and a fascinating display of epic and penetrating epic choirs, filled with rhythm and dynamism. The same can be said of “Straight Through The Mirror” , starting as symphonic as their previous LP, but then returning to a sound closer to albums like “Nightfall…” or “Somewhere Far Beyond” , with a solo that has something neoclassic about it. “Skalds and Shadows” is a veritable gem that brings chills down the spine because of the trademark that it is, with its medieval sound invoking images of bards, a theme so dear to the band. Thing is this album was a forceful purchase to me and it could really be a shot in the dark, a disappointment. Impossible! I don't believe any fan of the band, from today or yesteryear will be disappointed with “A Twist In The Myth” . They may not consider it the band's best album (but if they would, they couldn't be faulted), but they can't exclude it from the status of one the bright stars of the band's repertoire, neither can they deny that it shows there are band that no matter how many decades go by they will still deserve an irreplaceable spot in metal's throne room, thanks to their consistency and talent. They don't sell out nor do they repeat themselves to exhaustion, but their soul is there and everything we ever wanted in Blind Guardian is in this album. Somewhere between the new and the old, the more symphonic and progressive and the thrashier or speedier, it seems Blind Guardian tuned up their machine and achieved optimal performance. I spent the last year saying to whoever wanted to listen to me (not many would, I admit it) that to me, Savage Circus were what I though Blind Guardian could have been since “Nightfall…” . In reality, with this so balanced and strong album the band showed me that they, themselves, can be what I thought they could be. Complicated? Read again. It's an amazing return, joining the pearls of this final stretch of year 2006 and I'm beyond satisfied with what we get: to me, it dethrones “Nightfall…” as a favourite. If you think my rating is excessive, don't think about it until about the tenth time you listen to this. Since when does a Blind Guardian album reveal itself in all it's glory in just one or two listens? With so much to unfold? You wish! 9,5 for the album itself and 0,5 extra for being even better than what I hoped it would be. Vow to this or you may as well buy some donkey ears. Album of the year? Rate 10 / 10 |
Blind Guardian " A Twist in The Myth " A ideia de um novo álbum dos lendários Blind Guardian teve o mesmo efeito que uma pequena tempestade tropical: levou tudo pelo ar e pôs toda a gente em alvoroço. Sem um álbum há quatro anos e relativamente criticados por abraçarem uma vertente mais progressiva face ao seu passado agressivo, “A Twyst in the Myth” deixou muita gente com água na boca e ainda assim algum pé atrás. Eu estava esperançoso no meu desespero para ouvir um Hansi mais endiabrado que em Demons & Wizards após um “Touched By The Crimson King” que me deixou um pouco apático, e uns Blind Guardian a puxar um pouco ao passado, a puxar um pouco portanto, ao que Thomen Stauch fez com os Savage Circus e o potente “Dreamland Manor” . O que obtemos aqui é um pouco de ambos. A música é progressiva quanto baste, mas o Hansi está com a voz bem mais poderosa que no projecto com Jon Schaffer e não faltam os riffs poderosos e os solos agressivos com algum Speed/thrash do passado a dar-lhes peso e personalidade. O som é claro e beneficia muito as guitarras que se mantêm audíveis e potentes ao longo de todo o álbum. Ao mesmo tempo, ainda que subsistam várias camadas de vozes e de som, o fio nunca se perde na meada e estão bem presentes os coros grandiosos e épicos a que os Alemães nos habituaram. É a tal parte mais para o lado dos Savage Circus . Claramente, a voz do Hansi não sofreu estragos com as mazelas de que padeceu, porque ele está melhor que nunca, beneficiando de uma produção exemplar. Era exactamente isto que eu precisava de ouvir neste álbum e que não me agradou em D & W . Tiro o chapéu ao Hansi! Com muito que me lembra o grandioso de álbuns como “Nightfall in Middle Earth” , porventura o meu favorito, com a sonoridade mais épica de trabalhos como “A Night At The Opera” , a mistura é sublime. Do início com a fantástica “This Will Never End” , passando por “Otherland” , a banda começa a mostrar-nos o quão refrescante este álbum é, até chegarmos à grandiosidade de “Turn The Page” , mistura perfeita entre os velhos e os novos Blind Guardian e uma fascinante demonstração de coros épicos e penetrantes, cheia de ritmo e dinamismo. O mesmo pode ser dito de “Straight Through The Mirror” , que começa tão sinfónica como o trabalho anterior, mas que volta a uma sonoridade muito afim dos álbuns “Nightfall...” ou “Somewhere Far Beyond” , com um solo que tem algo de neoclássico. “Skalds and Shadows” é uma gema que causa arrepios pela imagem de marca que é, com o seu som medieval, a invocar as imagens de bardos, temática tão afim da banda. A questão é que este álbum era compra obrigatória para mim e podia ser um tiro no charco, uma desilusão. Impossível! Não acredito que algum fã da banda, de hoje ou de ontem, se desiluda com “A Twist In The Myth” . Poderão não o considerar o melhor álbum da banda (ainda que se o fizessem, não seriam criticáveis), mas não o poderão excluir como uma das estrelas brilhantes no seu repertório, nem poderão negar que mostra que há bandas que por mais décadas que se passem continuarão a merecer um lugar intransmissível na sala do trono do metal, pela sua consistência e talento. Não se vendem nem se repetem até à exaustão, mas a alma está lá, e tudo o que sempre quisemos em Blind Guardian está neste álbum. Entre o novo e o antigo, entre o mais sinfónico e progressivo ou o mais thrashy e speedy, parece que os Blind Guardian afinaram a máquina e conseguiram atingir o ponto. Eu passei o último ano a dizer a quem me quisesse ouvir (e eram poucos, admito) que para mim Savage Circus eram o que eu pensava que os Blind Guardian poderiam ter sido desde o “ Nightfall...” . Na verdade, com este álbum tão equilibrado e forte a banda mostra-me claramente que eles mesmos podem ser aquilo que eu achava que eles poderiam ser. Complicado? Leiam de novo. É um regresso impressionante que se junta às pérolas desta recta final de 2006 e eu estou satisfeitíssimo com o que nos é oferecido: para mim, destrona o “Nightfall...” como favorito. Se acham a nota excessiva, não pensem nela até à décima vez que ouvirem o álbum. Desde quando é que um álbum de Blind Guardian se revela em toda a sua grandiosidade em uma ou duas audições? Com tanto para ir descobrindo?! Queriam! 9,5 pelo álbum e 0,5 por ser ainda melhor que o que eu precisava... Rendam-se a isto ou podem bem comprar orelhas de burro. Álbum do ano?
