Celebrators of Becoming You know, I bet there is someone out there who actually got a pagan black metal album for Christmas. How ironic is that? In my case I have not received such a thing, but paradise itself. Or I mean: some bands keep it simple and are quite good at it. Others try to complicate it and screw up. Therion on the other hand know how to make it grand and epic and as far as I’m concerned they are THE band that actually embodies everything that symphonic music ever was. Even in comparison to the bleached version of orchestral music that nowadays is composed, Therion strike me as something that would go well with Wagner, Bach or Carl Orff. It is undeniable that while many bands do use orchestration and symphonic elements to some degree, Therion are the ones who most perfectly give us the same epic proportions and wondrous atmospheres of adventure and myth that you only get in the great operas or cantatas of the past. So, and where I’m concerned, anything that they made from their first turns towards the symphonic spectrum with “Theli” is nothing short of remarkable and on constant evolution, by the time they delivered us “Lemuria” and “Sirius B”, they had reached heights of perfection and grandeur that I had never imagined. They had become instrumental in giving metal new boundaries and while at that Therion became quite impossible to imitate. Sure, you can be influenced by them, you can even try to copy them, but their sound, their approach is so “theirs” that you will recognize immediately what is Therion and what is not! And being the purest definition of grandeur, Therion would never giver us a DVD that would be less than remarkable, and “Celebrators of Becoming” is just that: remarkable. Offering us the most amazing price/quality relationship I’ve ever seen, we are actually paying for what are 4 DVD’s and two live CD’s, containing pretty much everything that the band ever was. The first DVD is probably the most important in that it covers Therion’s concert in This is not the only concert available though, and DVD3 gives us 8 songs from their participation at Wacken 2001. This is great since songs like “Birth of Venus Illegitima”, “To Mega Therion” and others are not played in the Mexico City disc, so other than a couple of songs, it’s not repeated content at all. And you also get videoclips from the band’s history and they make for an interesting view indeed. But a real piece of gold is DVD4, aka “Historical Disk” which is one hell of an anthology of the band, with over 30 songs from their whole career. These were all recorded live, the oldest in 1989 and the newest in 2001 and for the looks of it, many of them are pure amateur recordings by members of the audience that were sent to the band. Even Therion’s show in Oh, and of course there’s the stunning DVD2 with a very extensive tour report. It pretty much includes recordings made in just about any town on every concert of their 2004 tour. The band does complain how in some countries they couldn’t obtain proper cooperation, such as the case of Finally, the 2 CDs that contain the audio are very well mixed. The sound is clean and every instrument is audible, even when you can hear the crowd cheering. It’s not the sound we get on the albums, perhaps a bit stripped due to contingencies, but the songs are strong and are a pleasure to listen. I have rarely seen so much content in a single release and what’s the most important of it all, it’s relevant content. You don’t get pseudo bonuses or crappy stuff, but very interesting material from the band’s more than a decade long career and I liked watching how they kept evolving and getting better and better. I won’t even comment on any of the goodies or you would be reading me until Armageddon… There were bound to be tradeoffs for such a good “value for your money” and the sound is Dolby Digital 2.0, with no 5.1 mix, which doesn’t affect me since I don’t own a 5.1 system. It’s great stereo mixing anyway and it doesn’t detract from the fact that Therion have given us something worthy of admiration and packed with great material at an affordable price. This DVD should be looked at as an example of how good a product one can produce if it’s mind is not on sucking every cent out of the fans and there are a couple of bands who send out a DVD every other month with nothing special that should learn a lot from Therion. But who am I kidding? Such bands are money-chasers, more than concerned about giving their fans something truly special, and trust me: it doesn’t get much more special or impressive than this. “Celebrators of Becoming” sets the standard for a DVD/box release, and either you top it or not, is not a case of being able to, is a matter of how much you put yourself into it. Therion are no megaband, nor are they selling millions per day, and still have given us more relevant content than some bands ever will, even if they release every sound they ever made. Therion Celebrators of Becoming Sabem, aposto que há por aí gente que recebeu algum álbum de black metal pagão como prenda de Natal. Quão irónico é isso? No meu caso, não recebi tal coisa, mas o próprio paraíso. Ou o Valhalla, como desejarem. Algumas bandas fazem as coisas de modo simples e são muito boas a esse nível. Outras tentam complicar e estragam tudo. Os Therion, por outro lado sabem como fazer as coisas grandiosas e épicas, e no que me concerne são A banda que verdadeiramente incorpora tudo aquilo que a música sinfónica alguma vez foi. Mesmo comparados à versão mais pálida que é a música orquestral de hoje em dia, os Therion surgem-me como algo que ficaria bem ao lado de Wagner, Bach ou Carl Orff. É inquestionável que enquanto muitas bandas usam de facto orquestrações até determinado ponto, são os Therion quem mais perfeitamente nos dá as mesmas proporções épicas e atmosferas magnificentes de aventuras e mitologia que só se encontram nas operas e cantatas de outros tempos. Portanto, e quanto ao que a mim me diz respeito, tudo o que eles fizeram desde as suas primeiras curvas em direcção ao sinfónico com “Theli”, é nada menos que notável e, em constante evolução, pela altura que publicaram “Lemuria” e “Sirius B”, tinham atingido níveis de perfeição e grandeza que eu nunca imaginara. Tinham-se tornado instrumentais em dar ao metal novas fronteiras e pelo meio tornaram-se praticamente impossíveis de imitar. Está claro que podem ser influenciados por eles, até os podem tentar copiar, mas o seu som, a sua abordagem é tão própria que reconhecerão imediatamente o que é Therion e o que não é. E sendo a mais pura definição de grandeza, os Therion nunca poderiam dar-nos um DVD menos que notável, e “Celebrators of Becoming” é isso mesmo: notável. Oferecendo-nos a melhor relação preço/qualidade que alguma vez vi, estamos realmente a pagar por 4 DVD's e 2 CD's, contendo praticamente tudo aquilo que a banda alguma vez foi. O primeiro DVD é provavelmente o mais importante ao cobrir o concerto da banda na Cidade do México em 2004 onde um total de 23 músicas são tocadas em frente a uma multidão muito participativa. E não admira, pois a banda faz justiça ao seu impressionante catálogo enquanto em palco. Já sabíamos o que esperar de cada membro e eles cumprem. Já Mats Levén é excelente desde o início com “The Blood of Kingu”, o mesmo podendo ser dito da loirinha Karin Fjellander, com o seu excelente talento vocal. O alinhamento é fantástico, cobrindo toda a sua carreira, com “Melez”, do álbum Lepaca Kliffoth, “Wine of Aluqah” do álbum Vovin, “Invocation of Naamah do Theli, “Seven Secrets of the Sphinx” do trabalho Deggial ou “Schwarzalbenheim” de Secret of the Runes, até às músicas tiradas de Lemuria/Sirius B e que arrasam. Este não é todavia o único concerto disponível e o DVD3 dá-nos as 8 músicas da sua participação no festival Wacken 2001. Isto é óptimo porque músicas como “Birth of Vénus Illegitima”, “To Mega Therion” e outras não são cobertas pelo concerto no México, pelo que tirando um par de músicas, não é material repetido. E incluem-se ainda videoclips da história da banda que são muito interessantes de visualizar. Mas verdadeiro ouro é o DVD4, ou “Disco Histórico”, que é uma grande antologia da banda, com mais de 30 músicas de toda a sua carreira. Todas elas foram gravadas ao vivo, a mais antiga em 1989 e a mais recente em 2001 e pelo que se vê, muitas gravações são do mais puro amadorismo por parte de pessoas na audiência e temos assim concertos de praticamente todo o mundo. Até o concerto em Portugal com os Moonspell em 1998 está lá (o que me faz lembrar: não é altura de cá voltarem?!). Não esperem alta qualidade de som e de imagem: o som é mono na melhor das hipóteses, as imagens são tremidas e tudo menos cristalinas, mas é uma grande viagem pela história da banda, para se ver praticamente toda a gente que alguma vez esteve nos Therion, incluindo Kimberly Goss e Sarah Jezebel Deva. Ah, e temos claro o exclenete DVD2, com uma muito extensa reportagem da digressão. Inclui gravações em praticamente todas as cidades e todos os concertos da digressão de 2004, embora a banda se queixe da falta de colaboração por parte de alguns países, principalmente a Turquia. Talvez por isso haja apenas 6 minutos de filme nesse país, mas o improviso a capela após um corte de energia é digno de nota! Grande trabalho da Karin, mas penso que alguns no público poderiam ter ficado um pouco mais calados em respeito (os shhhs são constantes)! Há também um solo de bateria, o que é algo de chato fazer numa sala praticamente às escuras. A qualidade é muito melhor que no disco histórico, até porque a qualidade das câmaras subiu bastante desde 2001, mas ainda são muitas filmagens feitas pela própria banda ou por amigos, usando as suas próprias câmaras, pelo que não é exactamente material profissional. Talvez isso não seja o mais importante, já que é uma excelente visão da vida em digressão da banda, sem nenhuma artificialidade introduzida por algum realizador atrás de dinheiro. É genuíno e honesto e cheio de humor por vezes, se considerarem a banda vestida com toalhas a imitar Egípcios algo humorístico. Finalmente, os 2 CD's que contêm o áudio estão muito bem misturados. O som é claro e cada instrumento ouve-se bem, mesmo quando a multidão está a aplaudir. Não é o som que temos nos álbums, é talvez menos rico devido às circunstâncias, mas as canções são fortes e um prazer para se ouvir. Raramente terei visto tanto conteúdo numa única edição e o que é mais importante que tudo, é que se trata de conteúdo relevant. Não vão apanhar com pseudo bónus ou tretas, mas material muito interessante da carreira de mais de dez anos da banda e eu adorei ver o quanto eles evoluíram para ficarem cada vez melhores. Nem vou comentar mais todas as guloseimas, senão ficam a ler-me até ao fim do mundo… Algum lado negativo teria de haver para tal relação qualidade/preço, e o som é Dolby Digital 2.0, sem existir opção para 5.1, o que não me afecta porque não tenho nenhum sistema 5.1! De qualquer modo, é excelente stereo e não retira nada ao facto de os Therion nos terem dado algo digno de admiração e repleto de grande material a um preço bem atraente. Este DVD deve ser encarado como um exemplo de quão bom um produto pode ser se não tiver em mente o sugar cada centavo aos fãs e há algumas bandas que editam DVD's a cada mês que deviam aprender algo com os Therion. Mas quem estou a enganar? Tais bandas andam atrás do dinheiro mais do que estão preocupadas em dar algo especial aos seus fãs, e confiem em mim: não é possível ter-se algo muito mais especial ou impressionante que isto. “Celebrators of Becoming” estabelece o nível para a edição de um qualquer DVD/Box e se o superam ou não, não é um caso de ser capaz de o fazer, mas um caso de o quanto se entregam a isso. Os Therion não são nenhuma megabanda, nem andam a vender milhões por dia, e ainda assim deram-nos mais conteúdo mais relevante do que muitas bandas conseguirão fazer, ainda que lancem no mercado cada som que alguma vez fizeram.
