Não conhecendo a banda até receber a Promo, o facto desta ter “Power Metal” escrito em grandes letras brancas fez-me franzir o sobrolho e, hesitante, dei-lhes uma oportunidade.
Enquanto esperava por algo dentro do Power Metal Europeu mais alegre, os INTENSE começam o álbum com a pesada “Anger Of The Ancients”, um hino de riffs pesados e bateria acelerada que lembra bastante a sonoridade de bandas como ICED EARTH ou JAG PANZER. “Mirror Shroud” não faz nada para mudar a minha opinião, enquanto Sean Hetherington começa a invocar-me algo de Matt Barlow.

Por isso, sim, é Power Metal, mas não do género mais piroso que poderiam esperar. Na verdade, é bem pesado e os riffs são ou bons ou fantásticos, como no caso de “You Die Today”, uma das minhas composições favoritas, só por causa do excelente, intenso e técnico riffing que por lá se ouve, algo que se adequa igualmente à assombrosa “Fear Is Not Enough”.
Nick Palmer e Dave Peak fazem um trabalho estonteante nas guitarras, não apenas com riffs marcantes, mas frequentemente rebentando em imensos solos de fazer cair os queixos, plenos quer de intensidade, quer de bom-gosto. Noutros momentos lembram os IRON MAIDEN nas leads (a grande “Our Last Hope” ou “Temptress”, por exemplo), e serei o último a queixar-me disso.

E enquanto muitos parecem concordar que a banda tem algo de ICED EARTH, em toda a justiça fui surpreendido pelo nível técnico dos INTENSE. Há ali uma excelente bateria, o pedal particularmente impressionante e foi no meio desta constatação que me decidi que este álbum tinha tanto de Progressivo como de Power Metal, e algo do seu som lembrava-me THRESHOLD, embora com menos melodia, algo bem aparente em “Trojan Tranmission” e outras. E então fiquei a saber que Karl Groom (dos THRESHOLD, sim) fora o responsável pela mistura do álbum. Isso explicou-me bastante.

Todavia sinto que o álbum é por vezes algo brando. O seu “pior” é realmente de altíssima qualidade, cada composição sólida e tecnicamente interessante, enquanto algumas estão acima desse nível e são realmente impressionantes, como a primeira pista, ou a progressiva “Chronicles Of The New Flesh Trilogy”, no final, no seu todo um belo trio de músicas. Passa-se apenas que as melodias não são tão penetrantes como eu esperava, não pouco porque rapidamente os comparei com THRESHOLD.

Tudo considerado, não se deixem enganar pela etiqueta “Power Metal”. “As Our Army Grows” é na verdade uma muito bem conseguida mistura de Power Metal de influências Norte-Americanas, com algo de Maiden nas melodias e muito de progressivo nas estruturas. O resultado é tão interessante quanto parece, significando na prática que apesar das influências, os INTENSE não são derivativos nem “soam como qualquer outra banda”, e estes senhores surgir-vos-ão como músicos experientes e talentosos que terão de apreciar. Recomendo vivamente este trabalho na esperança que o seu exército de facto cresça. Eles merecem-no de facto com este belo trabalho.

Not knowing the band before getting the Promo, the fact that it had “Power Metal” written in its back with big, white lettering, made me raise an eyebrow and, shivering, I gave it a try.
While I was waiting for something in the vein of joyous European Power Metal, INTENSE start the album with the heavy “Anger Of The Ancients”, a heavy-riffing, fast drumming anthem that really reminds us of bands such as ICED EARTH or JAG PANZER. “Mirror Shroud” doesn’t change your mind about that, while Sean Hetherington strikes you as having something of Matt Barlow in him.

So yes, Power Metal it is, but not the cheesy kind you might expect. It’s actually heavy and the riffing is either good or amazing, like is the case with “You Die Today”, one of my favourites in the whole album just because of the great, intense, technical riffing going on there, something that might also be said of the haunting “Fear Is Not Enough”.
Nick Palmer and Dave Peak do a stunning job in the guitar department, not only with impressive riffing, but often bursting into immense jaw-dropping solos, filled both with intensity and tastefulness. Other times they remind me of IRON MAIDEN in the leads (the great “Our Last Hope” or “Temptress” per example), and I’ll be the last person to complain about it.

And while everybody seems to agree the band borrows something of ICED EARTH, in all justice I was somewhat struck by the technical level of INTENSE. Some great drumming goes on in this album, the pedal being quite impressive and it was at the midst of this realization that I decided that a lot of this band sound as much Progressive as it did Power Metal, and something of its sound reminded me of THRESHOLD, albeit with less melody, something quite apparent with “Trojan Transmission” and others. So I came to realize Karl Groom (from THRESHOLD, yes) had engineered and mixed this album. That explained a lot to me.

I do feel this album is sometimes blander than it should. Their “worse” is actually of quite high quality, every song solid and technically interesting, while some are above that and really amazing, like the opener, or the progressive “Chronicles Of The New Flesh Trilogy” at the end, in its whole, a great trio of songs. It’s just that the melodies are not as infectious as I’d expect, not least because in my mind I compared them with THRESHOLD.

All in all, don’t be fooled by the “Power Metal” tag. “As Our Army Grows” is really a very well achieved mix of US influenced Power Metal, with a bit of Maiden in the melodies and a lot of progressive structures. The result is as interesting as it sounds, meaning that despite the clear influences, INTENSE aren’t derivative and sounding “just like every other band”, and these guys will strike you as experienced and talented musicians you’ll have to appreciate. I highly recommend this one in the hope their army will indeed grow. They certainly deserve so with this fine album.
