Amberian Dawn - River Of Tuoni

Muito depois de os samples disponibilizados pela banda me captarem a atenção, eis que seguro nas mãos o primeiro esforço dos Amberian Dawn, desde já um conjunto que considero de grande potencial para o futuro, por razões que passarei a explicar.

Um fã declarado de Virtuocity, a curiosidade não poderia deixar de ser muita quando vi este novo projecto de Tuomas Seppällä (guitarra) e Tommi Kuri (baixo) ambos também nos Atheme One com o baterista Joonas Pykälä, aos quais se juntam o guitarrista Kasperi Heikkinen (Iconofear, ao vivo nos Gamma Ray em 2006) e a talentosa Heidi Parviainen (Iconofear, Agonia). Sampo Seppällä e Heikki Saari, mencionados no álbum entretanto deixaram a banda.

É Heidi que se encontra no centro das melodias que o grupo oriundo de Espoo nos oferece e como tal recebe muito do protagonismo que a banda eventualmente terá. Pelo seu timbre e técnica, lembra claramente Tarja Turunnen sem ser igual; tem um timbre mais fino e por vezes parece subir mais, não lhe faltando talento. Contudo e em consequência, a música dos Amberian Dawn não escapará a semelhanças claras com os Nightwish iniciais (entre Angels Fall First e Wishmaster), mas com uma vertente bem mais neoclássica, eventualmente com Stratovarius e Sonata Arctica em mente, e as teclas num papel mais atmosférico.

Se a originalidade não é o ponto principal em “River Of Tuoni”, o historial e talento do alinhamento deixa desde logo antever um álbum de qualidade. E não desiludem, graças a uma oferta bem extensa de melodias bem construídas e harmonias atraentes principalmente nas leads das guitarras e teclas. “River Of Tuoni” é aquela música cuja qualidade mais rapidamente nos atinge. Parecendo que as restantes músicas empalidecem em comparação, há qualquer coisa que nos prende ao álbum e acabamos por nos deixar cativar por ele à medida que o descobrimos. Composições como “Lullaby”, “Fate Of The Maiden” ou “The Curse” e “Sunrise” são dignas de nota e músicas muito boas por direito próprio, embora no espectro mais lento da banda “Passing Bells” seja uma das mais intensas músicas do álbum.

Como primeiro álbum, “River Of Tuoni” está digno de nota e se lhe podemos apontar algum defeito é percebermos que ainda podem puxar mais, tanto por Heidi como pelo instrumental que tem potencial para ser mais arrojado e com clímaxes bem mais intensos. Uma identidade mais definida também favoreceria os Finlandeses, mas, estes pormenores aparte, “River Of Tuoni” tem o potencial para se agarrar tenazmente ao leitor de CDs como o tem feito por aqui e se gostam do vosso Metal Melódico com vocalista clássica este é um esforço muito competente e agradável que com toda a certeza deverão tentar conhecer.

Como uma das primeiras apostas da nova editora de Lee Barrett (Ascendance Records), dedicada exclusivamente a bandas com vocalistas femininas, os Amberian Dawn deixam muito boas indicações para ambas as partes.

Long after the online samples caught my attention, I finally hold in my hands the debut of Amberian Dawn, a band which I think has a lot of potential for the future, for reasons I’ll explain later on.

Being a fan of Virtuocity, I couldn’t help but feel curious when I noticed this new project from Tuomas Seppälä (guitar) and Tommi Kuri (bass), both also with Atheme One with drummer Joonas Pykälä, and joined by guitarist Kasperi Heikkinen (Iconofear, live with Gamma Ray in 2006), plus very talented Heidi Parviainen (Iconofear, Agonia). Sampo Seppälä and Heikki Saari, mentioned in the album, have in the meantime left the band.

It’s Heidi who sits at the center of the melodies the guys from Espoo deliver us and as such will receive a lot of the attention the band will eventually get. By her tone and classical training, she will clearly remind you of Tarja Turunnen without being a copy; her tone is actually thinner and she seems to hit higher notes, lacking no talent whatsoever. Still, and as a consequence, Amberian Dawn’s music won’t escape comparisons with earlier Nightwish (from Angels Fall First to Wishmaster), but quite more neoclassic, eventually with hints of Stratovarius and the keyboards in a more atmospheric role, leaving the guitars to perform upfront and rather interestingly indeed.

If originality isn’t the main selling point in “River Of Tuoni”, the talent and history of the lineup hinted from the start at quality album. And they don’t disappoint, thanks to an extensive offering of well built melodies and enticing harmonies, mostly in the guitar and keyboard leads. “River Of Tuoni” is perhaps the song you’ll more quickly come to love. While the others seem to pale in comparison, there’s always something binding you to the album and it ends up growing on you and you’ll come to appreciate it. Songs such as “Lullaby”, “Fate Of The Maiden” or “The Curse” and “Sunrise” are worthy of note and excellent songs on their own, but on the slower side of the band “Passing Bells” is one of the most beautiful songs in the album.

As a first album, “River Of Tuoni” gets high marks and if we can point out some flaws is that we realize they can push their boundaries even more, both with Heidi and the instrumentals which can be bolder, more pompous and have greater climaxes. A more defined identity will also benefit the band, but these details aside, “River Of Tuoni” has what it takes to take control of your CD player as it has been doing on this side of the screen and if you like your Melodic Metal with a classically trained singer with a lot of talent, this is one very competent and pleasant effort that you should at least get to know about.

As one of the first bets by Lee Barrett’s new label (Ascendance Records), exclusively dedicated to female fronted metal bands, Amberian Dawn certainly hint at an auspicious future for all involved.
