Brainstorm - Downburst
With a cover reminding me of Shinobi or something (but quite well done indeed), “Downburst” reached me the past January 25th in an astonishing packaging thanks to the jukebox with a tridimensional cover, as the successor of “Liquid Monster” which, despite its virtues, didn’t gather consensus in the media.
Exemplary produced by Sascha Paeth and Miro, “Downburst” reveals from the onset an impeccable and modern production, of crystal clear perfection that will quickly reveal all the virtues of a very powerful and technically appealing album.
Musically speaking, we are in the presence of an aggressive and explosive Power Metal, as has been the norm with these Germans, with reverberating riffing reminiscent of a more classic Heavy Metal, where hints of progressive and symphonic are not uncommon, much like the very accomplished melodic moments, assuring that although the album has an identifiable sonic identity, it never gets dull or repetitive as we travel along its songs.
Andy B. Franck, brilliant as always, shows signs of maturity and versatility that are enough to grant him a spot under the sun, side to side with the best in the business. From the aggressiveness of amazing tunes like “Fire Walk With Me” to the passion of the veritably hymn that “End In Sorrow” is, with his demonstrations of technique, feeling and range, nailing aggression and heartfelt melody with equal competence, Andy steals the show, and that’s something extraordinary to say when you take into account the band’s musical prowess.
There are plenty of hooks, tearing riffs, frequently exciting bass lines and drumming with the great double bass pedal worthy of highlighting, giving you the clear notion that Brainstorm are at a peak of creativity and energy. From the brilliant beginning with “Falling Spiral Down”, “Downburst” shows no weaknesses of a song bellow excellent, and it grabs your whole attention, unfolding itself already, so early in the year, as one of 2008’s most impressive albums and a firm example of how to make exceptional Power Metal. Don’t miss it, if you call yourself Metal!
