Draconian - Turning Season Within

Quando se conhece bem uma banda, avaliar o seu novo trabalho costuma ser canja: detectar as mudanças é tão fácil como estalar o dedo. No caso destes muito apreciados Suecos, “Turning Season Within” apresenta algumas mudanças subtis na sua sonoridade em relação a esforços anteriores, dificultando-me um pouco a avaliação clara do que tenho à minha frente.

Notório é que em comparação por exemplo com “The Burning Halo”, seu excelente antecessor, “Turning Season Within” mantém o mesmo tom sombrio e desesperante, mas abandona algo o Doom mais arrastado e etéreo por um Metal Gótico mais acelerado, talvez até mais directo. Acima de tudo soa muito maduro e coeso, com melodias altivas nas guitarras e teclas e uma sempre exemplar alternância entre a sufocante negritude de Anders Jacobsson e o raio de luz dos cânticos sublimes de Lisa Johansson. Esta última tem aqui mais proeminência que no passado, permitindo apreciar melhor o seu talento em algumas linhas vocais de apreciável grandiosidade e constitui uma evolução bem-vinda, sem ofensa para Anders, vocalista muito capaz de cantar a poesia opressiva do desespero, até da ameaça, e cuja presença é garante do equilíbrio lírico da banda. Afinal, se há algo incontornável em Draconian é a frequente irrepreensibilidade da interacção entre escuridão e luz a nível vocal, obtida com uma fluidez e completude que muitas bandas – apesar de competentes – não atingem.

É difícil não perceber o nível de empenho que foi colocado em “Turning Season Within”, resultando em músicas bem pensadas e ponderadas, sem exageros desnecessários ou lacunas injustificáveis. As peças do puzzle caem simplesmente no lugar e “Seasons Apart”, “When I Wake”, “The Failure Epiphany”, entre outras, são gemas polidas de uma profundidade que nos envolverá e arrastará para os sentimentos intensos que expressam e momentos existem que são de puro sublime, com um belo e discreto uso dos teclados para criar uma majestosa tonalidade de fundo.

Enquanto evolução numa direcção que podem ou não apreciar, o mais recente trabalho dos Draconian mantém a sua essência intacta e revela-se um álbum de uma muito pronunciada beleza soturna, um majestoso e habilidoso tecer de melodias garantidamente capazes de eriçar os pêlos do pescoço, pelo que se ainda não estão a sorver esta escuridão aveludada, não percam mais tempo.

When you know a band well, to evaluate their latest album is usually a piece of cake: detecting the changes is as easy as snapping your fingers. In the case of these highly appreciated Swedes, “Turning Season Within” presents you with some subtle changes in their sound, when compared to previous efforts, creating me some difficulties at the time of clearly evaluating what I’m listening to.

What immediately comes to mind by comparing it with the likes of “The Burning Halo”, its excellent predecessor, is that “Turning Season Within” maintains the dark, despairing tone, but foregoes the more dragging and ethereal Doom in favor of a more accelerated Gothic Metal, one perhaps even more straightforward. Above all it sounds mature and solid, with soaring guitar and keyboard melodies and an always exemplary alternation between Anders Jacobsson’s suffocating darkness and the beams of light in Lisa Johansson’s sublime chants. The later now has greater prominence than before, allowing for her talent to be even more noticeable in vocal lines of undeniable grandeur, while being a very welcomed evolution, no offense to Anders, one to sing the oppressive poetry of despair and even menace like few others and whose presence here is a pillar of the band’s lyrical equilibrium. Indeed, if something is undeniable about Draconian is the irreprehensible interaction between vocal darkness and light, obtained with a fluidity and completeness some other bands – while talented – are unable to equal.

It’s hard not to notice the commitment that went into “Turning Season Within”, weaving well thought up songs, with no unnecessary exaggerations or unjustifiable deficiencies. The pieces of the puzzle simply fall into place and “Seasons Apart”, “When I Wake”, “The Failure Epiphany”, among others, are polished gems of a depth that will envelope you and drag you into the intense feelings they express and moments exist of sheer sublimity, with a beautiful yet discrete use of the keyboards to create a majestic backdrop.

While an evolution in a direction you may or not like, Draconian’s latest offering maintains their essence intact and turns out to be an album of a very pronounced dark beauty, a majestic and very skilful weaving of melodies guaranteed to make your skin crawl, so if you’re not enjoying its velvety darkness by now, don’t waste any more time.
