Grand Magus - Iron Will
De regresso para o seu quarto álbum, eis os mestres Suecos do Heavy clássico de tons Black Sabbath, Rainbow ou Dio, e de um modo nada surpreendente, saem-se com um álbum que se afigura essencial para os fãs do género. Aqui já não há nada de novo: quem sabe, sabe.
Como um martelo que desce certo e seguro sobre aço quente para formar uma afiada lâmina, a música dos Grand Magus sempre foi e permanece um exercício de resiliência e força pagãs em composições de letras intensas, sentidas, cortantes, sem que nada pareça capaz de as parar no seu caminho.
A entrada do novo baterista Sebastian em nada diminuiu o reconhecível talento do trio e a secção rítmica irrepreensível investe cada composição de um ritmo nunca particularmente veloz, mas que a par com os riffs fortíssimos e cadenciados de Janne Christoffersson, cria um constante sentimento de implacabilidade infatigável, com ocasionais e bem colocadas explosões rítmicas no pedal. O punho no ar acaba por ser obrigatório para acompanhar o brilhantismo do desempenho vocal de Janne, que alia o seu já reconhecido portento vocal a uma entoação épica cheia de emoção e eloquência para criar grandes momentos de puro Heavy-Metal clássico.
A unificar o conjunto, uma competente produção confere a “Iron Will” um som sólido, denso e reverberante para transformar as linhas de baixo num verdadeiro galope de Heavy-Metal, com um tom atmosférico na voz e cordas a incrementar o sentimento épico do álbum.
Sem composições fracas, a tittle-track é talvez a mais cativante, um verdadeiro blindado, lento, pesado, mas que persistentemente esmaga todos os obstáculos no caminho. “Like The Oar Strikes The Water” e “Fear Is The Key” com a sua clara toada anti-religiosa, ou a guerreira “I Am The North”, são apenas mais exemplos de como se cria um álbum de grandiosa masculinidade e alma guerreira.
Muito digno do seu nome, “Iron Will” é um trabalho tenaz e rijo e perante o que será um dos mais irrepreensíveis álbuns do mês de Junho, a recomendação da sua aquisição não pode ser outra coisa que não sem reservas.

Back with their fourth album are the Swedish masters of classic Heavy with hints of Black Sabbath, Rainbow or Dio and, not surprisingly, they deliver something truly essential to the fans of the genre. Nothing new here: those who know it, know it.
Like a hammer hitting steel, sure and strong to form the sharpest blade, Grand Magus’ music is and always has been an exercise in pagan strength and resilience with songs of intense, heartfelt and razor-sharp lyrics, which nothing seems able to stop in its path.
The arrival of new drummer Sebastian in no way compromised the trio’s recognizable talent and the irreprehensible rhythm section creates for each song a cadence that while never particularly fast, combines itself with Janne’s powerful and confident riffing to create a constant feeling of indefatigable relentlessness, with the occasional and well thought-up bass pedal outbursts. A fist raised high up in the air ends up mandatory to keep up with the vocal brilliancy of Janne’s performance, who allies his already amazing vocal skills to his usual epic phrasing overflowing with emotion and eloquence to create moments of grand and pure classic Heavy-Metal.
A very good production then wraps it all up with a thick and solid, reverberating sound to make bass lines thunderous of Heavy-Metal galloping, with a rather atmospheric to the vocal and chord tones adding to the epic feeling of the opus.
No weak songs to be found here, the title-track is perhaps the most enticing one, a veritable battlewagon, slow, heavy, fearsome, persistently crushing all obstacles in its path. “Like The Oar Strikes The Water” and “Fear Is The Key”, with their clear anti-religious tone, or the warring “I Am The North”, are just a few examples of how to create an album of grandiose virility and warrior soul.
Very worthy of its name, “Iron Will” is a tenacious, tough, record and holding in my hands one of last month’s most irreprehensible albums, my recommendation couldn’t be anything less than unreserved.
