Helstar - The King Of Hell
Enquanto se gasta tinta a discutir se banda A ou B voltou à forma depois de piores momentos, ou se é legítimo esperar que consigam voltar à velha glória, 13 anos depois do vilipendiado “Multiples Of Black”, os Norte-Americanos Helstar respondem sem contestação a estas perguntas com um dos melhores álbuns deste ano e inclusivamente da sua carreira.
“The King Of Hell” é toda uma enciclopédia de como fazer Speed Metal perto da perfeição técnica, soltando-nos em cima uma sucessão ritmada de riffs poderosos, ríspidos e maldosos. A bateria de Russel DeLeon é todo um portento, o pedal a sustentar e a mudar os ritmos a seu bel-prazer, servido por uma produção impecável. Se me atrevo a dizê-lo, este álbum estará entre os 10 primeiros de 2008 em termos de qualidade sonora e a bateria em particular está brilhante, cristalina e dura, com a batida grave do pedal a ribombar na nossa caixa torácica.
As performances individuais não são menos que fantásticas, inclusivamente o mítico James Rivera em notável topo de forma e como resultado não podemos apontar nada de errado ao álbum. Começando com a arrepiante introdução de “The King Of Hell”, o álbum lança-se numa sucessão de composições variadas, repletas de saltos rítmicos e momentos altos, onde a fúria nunca realmente cessa e impregnadas de uma atmosfera decididamente maléfica, sinistra. A banda parece tirar a vez a controlar as músicas, umas vezes levadas numa trela curta por Rivera, outras vezes tomando-nos de assalto pelo ataque impiedoso de Barragan/Trevino, sobrando ainda espaço para os ritmos elaborados de DeLeon e as tiradas de Abarca.
Seja a variância devastadora de “The Plague Called Man”, uma dessas músicas às quais é impossível resistir, a velocidade trovejante de “Wicked Disposition”, o sinistro de “Pain Will Be Thy Name”, “The King Of Hell” é uma explosão de agressão para o metaleiro de bolas de aço que sabe reconhecer qualidade quando a ouve. Se estão interessados em saber como se faz valer a pena o regresso de uma banda e ao mesmo tempo se dá uma lição de Metal aos putos em início de carreira, é isto que devem ouvir do início ao fim para saberem como as coisas se fazem bem.
Num ano excelente para o Metal e para a AFM também, os Helstar chegaram, avivaram as chamas do inferno e igualaram os melhores entre os melhores. Este não vão querer perder, este não vão perder. Agarrem-no antes que as vossas bolas murchem e caiam.

While a lot of ink is spilled discussing if this or that band is back in shape after some unfortunate times, or if it’s legitimate to expect them to go back to their old glory, 13 years after the unfortunate “Multiples Of Black”, North Americans Helstar answer both questions hands down with one of the best albums of the year and even their career.
“The King Of Hell” is a whole encyclopedia of how to make close to perfection Speed Metal, unleashing an impressive succession of powerful, harsh and mean riffing. Russel DeLeon’s drumming is titanic, the pedal supporting and changing the rhythms at its pleasing, served by an impeccable production job. If I may say so, this is one of the best albums of the year concerning the sound quality and the drums in particular are brilliant, crystal clear and strong, the bass pedal echoing inside your chest.
The individual performances are no less than fantastic, the mythic James Rivera included, in a remarkable shape, and as a result, there’s hardly anything you could find wrong with the album. Beginning with the sinister introduction of “The King Of Hell”, the album goes headfirst into a succession of varied songs, filled with rhythmic changes and high moments where fury really never lets down and impregnated with a decidedly evil, sinister atmosphere. The band takes turns dominating the song, sometimes taken on a short leach by Rivera, others taking you by storm with Barragan/Trevino’s relentless assault, leaving enough space for DeLeon’s elaborate rhythms and Abarca’s escapades.
Be it the devastating variety in “The Plague Called Man”, the kind of song you’ll find irresistible, the thundering speed of “Wicked Disposition” or the sinister of “Pain Will Be Thy Name”, “The King Of Hell” is an explosion of aggression directed towards the metalhead with steel balls that recognizes quality when he listens to it. If you’re interested in knowing how to make a band’s return worth it while giving a metal lesson to the younger generations, this is what you should be listening to know how things are done.
In an excellent year for Metal and AFM also, Helstar have arrived, sparked the flames of hell and have equaled the best among the best. This one you certainly won’t want to miss out, this one you won’t miss out. Grab it, lest your balls shrivel up and fall off.
