Neverland - Reversing Time

“Reversing Time”, “To Lose The Sun ”, “World Beyond These Walls”, “Mountain Of Joy” e a deliciosa inicial “Shooting Star” são outras músicas memoráveis que seria uma injustiça não destacar.

Neverland - Reversing Time

Neverland as a project were born in 2006 with the cooperation of young Turkish band Dreamtone who have toured in support of Megadeth, Blind Guardian and Dream Theater, and Greek singer Iris Mavraki, born in Congo to a Greek father and an Austrian mother, with an extensive curriculum with performances in support of organizations like Greek Red Cross or UNICEF.

Taking into account the difficult relationships between Turkey and Greece, the partnership between these two artists is but the latest expression of Iris’ life philosophy and establishing of bridges between the two nations, and if something hints at the project’s credibility is the presence of names like Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards), Tom Englund (Evergrey) Gary Wehrkamp and Mike Barker (Shadow Gallery), plus the Istambul Symphonic Orchestra.

Soon “Reversing Time” reveals itself as a very competent and ambitious Prog/Melodic album with some very Prog Rock moments. Greek and Turkish music and sounds appear often, giving several songs a folk feeling and adding to the album’s diversity. Then we get a sublime work by the orchestra, unifying all the musical influences over an enticing and beautiful symphonic tapestry that elevates the whole package to another level of excellence. Thanks to this very competent integration of all the musical elements, the instrumental “Transcending Miracle” closes the album in a superb manner. “Reversing Time”, “To Lose The Sun ”, World Beyond These Walls” and the delicious opener “Shooting Star” are other memorable songs that it would be quite unjust not to highlight.

Vocally, some lines could have been bolder, but others are sublime with Iris doing a tremendously touching job, both in the supporting choirs and in the singing leads as in the beautiful piano ballad “Mountain Of Judgement”, with a certain Mike Oldfield/Enya hint to it. On the side of Dreamtone, Oganalp’s technique and tone may be hard to get used to (reminds me a bit of the Italian school of singers like Elvenking’s Damnagoras), but if you take into consideration the amazing guest performances, (Hansi Kürsch himself grandiose) that’s but a detail.

Beautifully decorated with art by renowned J.P. Fournier, “Reversing Time” also scores thanks to deep lyrics that say a lot about the composers’ desire to improve the world around them. Competent, with memorable details, it will go up against giants like Ayreon and Avantasia, and differences between the three projects aside, Dreamtone & Iris Mavraki’s Neverland are worth supporting and knowing their music is a rewarding experience you shouldn’t deny yourselves.

Thank you to Avispa Music for the review sample.
