Revolution Renaissance - New Era
Num gesto que poucos terá surpreendido, Timo Tolkki pôs fim definitivo a uma das mais icónicas bandas do Power Metal Europeu, os Sratovarius. Neste estado de coisas, as expectativas para este novo capítulo da sua vida musical ficaram algo baralhadas e terão sido muitos os que pouco esperavam de “New Era”, álbum que Timo prometeu ser ao nível de Stratovarius pela altura do “Visions”.
E não mentiu. “New Era” revela muito rapidamente que é um álbum de valor. Abrindo com a explosiva “Heroes”, grande momento de Power Metal “típico”, o álbum oferece-nos o primeiro dos três grandes vocalistas, Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia) que regressará com “Glorious And Divine”, e em qualquer uma das composições nota-se um sentido de melodia apuradíssimo que nos agarra muito facilmente.
Segue-se Michael Kiske (Helloween, Supared, Avantasia). Passados tantos anos, atrevo-me a dizer que ele ainda conseguiu melhorar e logo com “I Did It My Way” entrega uma composição de se cair de joelhos. Depois passa a momentos mais lentos como “Angel” e “Keep The Flame Alive” e a paixão com que agarra ambas as composições parece investi-las de um grande potencial para os tops, “Angel” particularmente uma power ballad como hoje em dia se vêem poucas.
Enfim, o ex-Thunderstone Rasi Pantanen, ele próprio um vocalista de grande capacidade agarra o touro pelos cornos e entrega uma grande performance na excelente “We Are Magic”, terceira composição do álbum e terceira composição a nos deixar agarrados a “New Era”. Em “Born Upon The Cross” o vocalista volta a um grande desempenho, embora “Eden Is Burning” me pareça a música mais fraca deste álbum e arrasta-se um pouco.
Com uma produção sólida embora a bateria pareça estar por vezes demasiado à frente, “New Era” é uma sucessão rápida de Power Melódico e algum Hard-Rock, um pouco como o mais recente Avantasia, alternando equilibradamente entre composições velozes e outras mais lentas, em qualquer um dos casos dando ao ouvinte melodias memoráveis. Mas mesmo no fim, numa peça realmente reminiscente de “Visions”, Timo Tolkki saca de uma pérola na forma de “Revolution Renaissance”. Tema épico com Kiske a brilhar, culminando em refrães intensos graças à inclusão dum coro, a composição mostra como se fecha um álbum de modo a deixar o apetite aberto para o que virá a seguir.
Fechando “New Era” como fecha, Timo Tolkki deixa em cima da mesa a ideia que não apenas quer mas tem o necessário para abrir uma “nova era” na sua carreira musical. Para dissipar as nuvens de um passado recente, não lhe bastava simplesmente exceder as expectativas baixas: teria que fazer um álbum verdadeiramente bom. E “New Era” é efectivamente um álbum fortíssimo que tem uma frescura e entrega já ausente de Stratovarius, e quem já o julgava gasto e sem inspiração terão de o reconsiderar.
Se no futuro Timo conseguir superar este álbum, então meus senhores, teremos realmente algo fora de série entre mãos.
Revolution Renaissance - New Era
In a move that surely didn’t surprise many, Timo Tolkki brought to an end one of the most iconic European Power Metal bands, Stratovarius. In this state of affairs, the expectations for this new chapter in his musical life were rather scrambled and I’m sure many didn’t expect much from “New Era”, an album Timo promised would be up to the level of “Visions” era Stratovarius.
And he didn’t lie. “New Era” quickly reveals itself as a valuable album. Opening with the explosive “Heroes”, a great moment of typical Power Metal, the album gives us the first of three vocalists, Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia) that will also handle “Glorious And Divine” and in both songs you’ll note the very refined sense of melody that will grab you easily.
Michael Kiske (Helloween, Supared, Avantasia) follows. After all these years, I dare say he’s even getting better and with “I Did It My Way” delivers an amazing song that will bring you to your knees. He then embraces slower songs like “Angel” and “Keep The Flame Alive” and the passion with which he grabs both gives them a lot of hit potential, “Angel” a really good power ballad like you don’t see very often these days.
At last, former Thunderstone lead singer Rasi Pantanen, himself a great singer, grabs the bull by the horns and hands out a great performance with the excellent “We Are Magic”, third song in the album and third one to leave you amazed. He performs very well in “Born Upon The Cross”, although “Eden Is Burning” appears to drag itself and is my least favorite track in “New Era”.
With a solid production even though the drums sometimes feel too upfront, “New Era” is a quick succession of Melodic Power and some Hard Rock, much like the latest Avantasia, keeping a balance between fast tunes and rather slower ones, in both cases providing the listener with memorable melodies. But right in the end, in a song very reminiscent of “Visions”, Timo Tolkki delivers a pearl in the shape of “Revolution Renaissance”. An epic song with Kiske shinning, culminating in intense choruses thanks to the inclusion of a choir, this tune shows how you close an album in order to leave people hungry for more.
Closing “New Era” the way he does, Timo Tolkki lays his cards on the table and shows he not only wants to open a “new era” in his musical career, but he has what it takes to do it. To blow away the dark clouds of recent times he couldn’t simply exceed expectations: he had to make a truly good album. And “New Era” is indeed a very strong album that shows a degree of freshness and passion that were absent of Stratovarius for too long, and those who might have thought of Timo as worn out and uninspired should really reconsider.
But gentlemen, if in the near future Timo manages to top this album, then we will really have something extraordinary at hand.
