White Lion - Return Of the Pride
Dezassete anos depois do seu último trabalho de estúdio, eis o regresso de uma das mais carismáticas bandas de hard-rock do final dos anos 80. “Return of The Pride” torna-se assim no quinto álbum de originais dos Norte-Americanos White Lion, que regressam agora, em força e orgulho.
Confesso que não sou um profundo conhecedor dos trabalhos anteriores da banda. Conheço apenas os temas que mais se destacaram nas rádios e na TV: “Wait”, “When The Children Cry” e “Little Fighter” são alguns deles. Admitindo este lapso, e porque este álbum me fez ter vontade de aprofundar o meu conhecimento da banda, posso-vos garantir que, na altura de atribuir a avaliação, estava praticamente em branco em relação ao passado da banda. Assim, a nota dada reflecte única e exclusivamente o conteúdo deste álbum como um todo, sem qualquer relação com o trabalho da banda feito no passado.
Passando aos temas, abertura em força com o primeiro épico do álbum: “Sangre de Cristo”. Lenta inicialmente, como se de uma balada se tratasse, depressa se transforma completamente, entrando numa energética toada que se mantém até ao fim deste tema que, como o título deixa transparecer, se centra numa temática mais religiosa. “Dream” e “Live your Life” são as senhoras que se seguem, a primeira no limbo entre o mid-tempo e a balada, e a segunda num ritmo energético com uma mensagem muito positiva. Na verdade, “Live your Life” é o perfeito exemplo do conteúdo deste álbum que é extremamente positivo, com melodias muito infecciosas, refrães cativantes, e óptimos solos para praticarmos na nossa air-guitar. Os amantes das famosas power ballads também não foram esquecidos, tendo em “Never Let You Go”, “Set Me Free”, e no tema bónus da edição Europeia “Take Me Home”, óptimas músicas para fazerem chorar as pedras da calçada.
No final, nada que nunca tenhamos visto, mas com uma receita que nunca envelhece. Um fantástico trabalho que, como já referi, me deixou com vontade de ouvir os anteriores álbuns. Se são amantes do bom hard-rock, daquele revivalista que transpira anos ’80 por cada poro, então este é o álbum a ouvir imediatamente.

Seventeen years after their last studio work, behold the return of one of the most renowned bands of late 80’s hard-rock. “Return of the Pride” becomes the fifth album of originals from the Americans White Lion, returned now in strength and pride.
I confess that I’m not a great expert about the band’s previous albums. I just know the few songs highlighted on radio and TV: “Wait”, “When the Children Cry” and “Little Fighter” are just some of them. Assuming this flaw, and because this album made me want to know about the band, I can assure you that I was completely blank about their past, when I made my evaluation. So, the score I gave reflects only the contents of this album as a whole, without any relation with White Lion’s previous works.
Passing to the songs, strong opening with the first epic of the album: “Sangre de Cristo”. Slow initially, just like a ballad, quickly it transforms, entering on an energetic tune which goes on until the end of this song which is, like the title shows, centered on a more religious theme. “Dream” and “Live your Life” come next, the first on a limbo between a mid-tempos songand a ballad, and the second on a bouncy beat with a very positive message. In fact, “Live your Life” is the perfect example of the contents of this album, one which is extremely positive, with catchy melodies, attractive choruses, and great solos to practice on our air-guitar. The lovers of the famous power ballads were not forgotten, having on “Never Let You Go”, “Set Me Free”, and on the European bonus track “Take Me Home”, great songs to make the stones on the pavement cry.
In the end, nothing we haven’t heard already, but with a recipe that never gets old. An amazing work which, like as said, made me want to give a listen to their previous albums. If you’re a lover of good hard-rock, the one that transpires 80’s through every pore, then this is the album to hear immediately.
