Crimfall - As The Path Unfolds…

No mercado desde 02 de Março passado, está uma das mais recentes apostas da Napalm Records, nomeadamente os Crimfall, que com "As The Path Unfolds..." nos entregam uma estreia que não soa de modo algum como um primeiro álbum.

De todos os álbuns da editora Austríaca que por estes dias me foram entregues, não suspeitava que daqui viesse a real pérola do conjunto. À primeira vista, os Crimfall poderiam passar por mais uma banda de Gótico ou Folk em que a fórmula vocal da bela e do monstro se visse de novo abusada, mas nada poderia afastar-se mais da verdade.

Primeiro e desde logo porque os gritos típicos do Black Metal de Mikko Hakkinen não se limitam a alternar com os cânticos da ex-Tacere Helena Haaparanta, mas ambos se complementam sem entrarem em estruturas previsíveis.

Depois, porque ao contrário do que geralmente acontece, Helena Haaparanta não é apenas a "bela" da voz angelical. As suas vocalizações não se limitam ao meloso e mostram uma variedade técnica invejável, perfeitamente capaz de rivalizar com as melhores do ramo, Tarja, Simone, Floor. Com uma grande reserva de força e energia para surpreender, Helena é a todos os títulos admirável.

Vocalmente irrepreensível, o álbum prima ainda por instrumentais que transcendem etiquetagens, recriando uma ambiciosa tapeçaria musical com pontilhados de Black, Sinfónico, Power, Progressivo, Folk e Viking que se torna bastante fluida, graças a uma composição realmente competente e cuidada em que as variadas influências se integram perfeitamente umas nas outras. Por vezes podemos pensar nuns Epica, com alguns traços de Nightwish primordiais, mas a comparação mais justa será talvez com uns fenomenais Winterdome, não por meros paralelos musicais, mas pela grandiosidade épica de que este álbum foi imbuído. As orquestrações são, de resto, impressionantes e inteligentes.

Composição atrás de composição, o brilhantismo de "As The Path Unfolds..." revela-se e reafirma-se, sem qualquer momento entediante ou composições que destoem do conjunto global ainda que a variabilidade seja surpreendente: compare-se a intensa melodia afim do Power Metal de "Where The Waning Winds Lead" com os orientalismos de "Ascension Pyre". Mas é ouvido do início ao fim que a saga de "As The Path Unfolds..." mostra toda a sua fluida glória e ganha um lugar cativo na nossa aparelhagem. Uma única rotação não chega efectivamente para saciar toda a voracidade que o álbum desperta em nós.

Em termos de gosto pessoal, as vocalizações Black nunca foram sobremesa para mim, mas de um ponto de vista meramente estilístico e neutro, "As The Path Unfolds..." é uma obra-prima de Folk Metal épico que coloca os Finlandeses Crimfall numa posição de destaque em relação à concorrência mais experiente e com todo o potencial para marcar o melhor de 2009.

Available in stores since last March 2nd, is one of Napalm Records’ most recent bets, namely Crimfall, who with “As The Path Unfolds…” deliver a debut that really doesn’t sound like a first album.

Of all the albums coming from the Austrian label that have landed on my lap these days, I would never have imagined this one would be the pearl. At first sight, Crimfall might be taken for just another Goth or Folk metal band where the tired old beauty and the beast would be used to exhaustion, but nothing could be farther from the truth.

First and foremost because the Black Metal shrieks by Mikko Hakkinen don’t just alternate with the chants of former Tacere siren Helena Haaparanta, but both actually complement each other without going into predictable structures.

And then because, unlike what’s more usual, Helena isn’t just the “beauty” with a heavenly voice. Her vocals aren’t just mellow and do show amazing technical variety, one capable of rivaling with the best in the business, Tarja, Simone, Floor. With a great reserve of strength and energy to surprise us, Helena is unquestionably admirable.

Vocally quite irreprehensible, the album also features instrumentals that transcend boundaries, recreating a wondrous and ambitious tapestry with dots of Black, Symphonic, Power, Progressive, Folk and Viking, all very fluid, thanks to a really careful and competent composing process where the various influences integrate perfectly with each other. We may sometimes think of Epica, with traces of early Nightwish, but the best comparison is probably with the phenomenal Winterdome, not because of musical parallels, but because of the epic grandeur this album is filled with. Orchestrations are, in fact, impressive and intelligent.

Song after song, the brilliance of “As The Path Unfolds…” reveals and reaffirms itself, with no boring moments or songs that feel out of place, even if there’s a surprising amount of variety: compare the intense Power Metal melody of “Where The Waning Winds Lead” with the oriental influences of “Ascension Pyre”. But it’s when listented from the beginning to the end as a whole that the saga in “As The Path Unfolds…” really shows its fluid glory and earns a captive spot in our stereo. One single listen is certainly not enough to appease all the hunger the album awakens in us.

As a simple personal taste, the Black vocals were never my cup of tea, but from a merely stylistic and neutral standpoint, “As The Path Unfolds…” is a Epic Folk Metal masterpiece that places Finland’s Crimfall a notch above more experienced competitors, with a serious chance to stand as one of 2009’s best.
