Criminal - White Hell

Nascidos no Chile, embora se tenham mudado para Inglaterra mais tarde devido às dificuldades económicas, os Criminal foram fundados no início dos anos 90 por Anton Reisenegger (voz e guitarra ritmo) e Rodrigo Contreras (guitarra solo). “White Hell” é o novo álbum destes Chilenos, onde nos oferecem doze canções recheadas de intensidade e raiva contagiante.
 
Neste sexto registo, os Criminal mostram-nos uma mistura de Thrash Metal e Death Metal Sueco, na qual há ainda espaço para o Metal mais moderno. Por isso, será normal se bandas como Slayer, The Haunted, The Crown e até Lamb Of God vierem à nossa memória durante a audição deste longa-duração.

 “White Hell” começa de forma demolidora. A faixa de abertura, “21 Century Paranoia”, é rápida, pesada e cativante o suficiente para nos por a abanar o pescoço. Tal como em muitas das outras canções que compõem este álbum, as guitarras graves influenciadas no Death Metal Sueco aliam-se à raiva do Metal sul-americano, resultando em algo ainda mais interessante quando se ouvem os solos de Rodrigo Contreras.

No entanto, este novo registo dos Criminal é mais do que um simples álbum de Thrash/Death Metal. Para começar, esta banda é muito competente a nível técnico. Se duvidam, ouçam o excelente e variado trabalho de bateria assinado por Zac O’Neill ou os cativantes e virtuosos solos de Rodrigo Contreras. Além disso, “White Hell” é variado o suficiente para não se tornar monótono. Se faixas como “21st Century Paranoia” ou “Black Light” nos remetem para nomes como The Crown, algumas melodias de “Strange Ways”, por exemplo, lembram-nos Slayer.

Apesar destas qualidades, “White Hell” carece de momentos que o tornem especial e isso pode ser visto como uma desvantagem. Não é daqueles álbuns que quando acaba de tocar nos dá logo vontade de carregar no Play de novo para voltar a ouvir esta ou aquela canção.

Em suma, este novo registo dos Criminal tem qualidade suficiente para agradar aos fãs de Thrash/Death Metal, graças à sua variedade e competência. Contudo, falta-lhe algo que o eleve a outro patamar, apesar de ser um bom disco.

Criminal - White Hell

Born in Chile, despite having moved to England later because of economic difficulties, Criminal were formed in the beginning of the 90’s by Anton Reisenegger (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Rodrigo Contreras (lead guitar). “White Hell” is their new album, where they offer us twelve songs full of intensity and contagious hatred.
 
In this sixth record, Criminal shows us a mixture of Thrash Metal and Swedish Death Metal, where there’s still space for some modern Metal influences. So it’ll be normal if bands like Slayer, The Haunted, The Crown and even Lamb Of God come up to our memory during the listening of this full-length.

 “White Hell” starts in a demolishing way. The opening track “21st Century Paranoia” is fast, heavy and appealing enough to make us headbang. Like on many other songs that compose this album, the down-tuned guitars influenced by Swedish Death Metal are mixed with the hatred from the South American Metal, resulting in something even more interesting when we listen to Rodrigo Contreras’ solos.

However, this Criminal’s record is much more than a simple Thrash/Death Metal album. Firstly, this band is very competent technically. If you doubt it, check the awesome and varied drum work done by Zac O’Neill or the appellative and virtuosos solos played by Rodrigo Contreras. Secondly, “White Hell” is varied enough to avoid becoming monotonous. If tracks like “21st Century Paranoia” or “Black Light” remind us of The Crown, some melodies from “Strange Ways” remind us of Slayer.

In spite of these qualities, “White Hell” lacks moments able to make it special and that can be seen as a disadvantage. It’s not that kind of albums that when they stop playing, our will is to push the Play button again to listen to this or that song.

In conclusion, this new Criminal’s record has enough qualities to please Thrash/Death Metal fans, thanks to its variety and competence. Still it lacks something able to make it reach a higher level, despite being a good album.
