Doro - Fear No Evil

Se um concurso fosse feito para nomear a verdadeira e única rainha do metal, pela sua carreira, pelo seu carisma, pela dedicação interminável ao Heavy Metal, pelos longos anos a manter-se fiel a si mesma e aos seus fãs enquanto fazia Metal da melhor qualidade, Doro Pesch seria a merecedora incontestável do galardão.

“Fear No Evil” é somente o seu mais recente esforço e como todos os álbuns da lenda Germânica é muito simples de definir: ou vão comprá-lo, admiram-no pelo que vale e reconhecem Doro pela titã que é, ou não, e nesse caso são palermas, não sabem o que é o Heavy Metal, e a vossa fronha deveria ser afixada em paredes para jamais voltarem a entrar num concerto de Metal.

Abrindo com a narração que antecede “The Night Of The Warlock”, o álbum rapidamente dá lugar a um Heavy oldschool muito melódico e memorável, do tipo “erguer o punho no ar”, que prossegue com “Running From The Devil” e o hino de “Celebrate”. Porque Doro é uma senhora respeitável também tem algumas composições mais melosas como “Herzblut”, “Long Lost For Love”, “It Kills Me” ou “Walking With The Angels” com a participação de Tarja Turunnen. Com isto, o álbum corre por vezes o risco de se tornar algo lamechas, enquanto “Caught In A Battle” me parece simplesmente… má.

Mas falemos a sério: há muito poucos vocalistas no metal que teriam sequer o direito de compor uma peça como “25 Years”, e se no mesmo álbum se mete o portento de “I Lay My Hand Upon My Sword”, o tipo de música que devia figurar nos manuais de quem anda na escolinha do metal, então a “Fear No Evil” faz-se uma vénia. “Night Of The Warlock” ou “I Lay My Hand Upon My Sword”, consigo imaginá-las perfeitamente como sucessos ao vivo, para cantar em encores em conjunto com esta grande senhora.

Um excelente sucessor para “Warrior Soul” de 2006, e mais uma jóia a acrescentar à coroa de um nome que orgulhosamente brilha como sinal de qualidade em álbuns desde o clássico “Force Majeure”, e antes disso nos imortais Warlock. O EP “Herzblut” que é lançado a 23 de Janeiro tem uma versão muito bem feita em Português chamada “Dou-te O Meu Coração”. Portugal tem uma longa tradição de mostrar a Doro o apreço que ela merece, por isso façam algo decente e não desiludam o país: obtenham este álbum.

If a competition would be made to nominate the one and only metal queen, by her career, charisma, her unending dedication to Heavy Metal, the long years remaining loyal to herself and the fans while making top notch Metal, Doro Pesch would be the unchallenged deserver of such a distinction.

“Fear No Evil” is only her latest effort and like all the albums from this German legend, it’s quite simple to define: you either buy it, admire it for what it’s worth and recognize Doro for the titan she is, or you don’t, and in that case you’re fools, you don’t know what Heavy Metal is, and your ugly mugs should be posted on every walls so you would never again be allowed to enter a single Metal show.

Opening with the narration preceding “The Night Of The Warlock”, the album quickly gives way to a very melodic and memorable oldschool Heavy to which you’ll raise your fist at, proceeding with “Running From The Devil” and the hymn “Celebrate”. Because Doro is a respectable lady, she also features some mellower songs such as “Herzblut”, “Long Lost For Love”, “It Kills Me” or “Walking With The Angels”, featuring Tarja Turunnen. With this, the album sometimes goes close to becoming sappy, while “Caught In A Battle” is just… bad.

But let’s be serious about this: there are very few metal singers who would even have the right to compose a song like “25 Years”, and if in the same album you include the majesty of “I Lay My Hand Upon My Sword”, the kind of song to be featured in metal school manuals, then to “Fear No Evil” you have to take a bow. “Night Of The Warlock” or “I Lay My Hand Upon My Sword”, I can indeed see them as live classics, to sing in encores with this great woman.

An excellent successor to 2006’s “Warrior Soul”, and another jewel to be added to the crown of a name that has been proudly shining on metal covers as a sign of quality since the classic “Force Majeure”, and before that with the immortal Warlock. In the “Herzblut” EP to be released in January 23rd, Doro features a very well done Portuguese version called “Dou-te O Meu Coração”. Portugal has a long history of showing Doro Pesch the appreciation she deserves, so do something decent and don’t let you county down: get this album.
