Nostradameus - Illusions Parade

Se tiver de nomear duas surpresas muito positivas em 2009, Nostradameus e Narnia são sem reservas a minha escolha para “melhor álbum a vir de onde não se espera”.

Fã destes Suecos desde “Words Of Nostradameus” de 2000, fiquei menos que impressionado com os dois álbuns que se seguiram a “The Third Prophecy” de 2003 e a banda deixou de estar no meu radar. Pelo menos até a AFM me fornecer este “Illusion’s Parade”, no mercado desde 13 de Novembro e que, relutantemente, acabei por meter no mp3.

O problema essencial nos antecessores de “Illusion’s Parade” foi uma perda da capacidade melódica, com os elementos mais thrash a soarem mal integrados. Pelo contrário, o álbum que agora ouço é maduro, bem composto, mais orgânico e com inquestionável atmosfera, comparável a Brainstorm ou Evergrey no seu sombrio, e mesclando bem o Power com o Thrash ao melhor estilo Germânico.

O som das guitarras está bastante intenso e os ritmos são na sua grande parte muito dinâmicos, tecnicamente conseguidos, com Freddy Persson, na voz, a entregar uma actuação cheia de variedade e melodia. “Walk Of Pain” e “Art Of Deception”, as duas primeiras músicas, são sem dúvida excelentes o suficiente para fazer as sobrancelhas erguerem-se e percebermos que este álbum é outra coisa.

Infelizmente, doravante o álbum não parece ter a mesma capacidade de agarrar o ouvinte, padecendo de alguma repetitividade, apesar de grandes malhas em “Nothing”, “Eclipse Of The Sun” e da arrojada “Broken Soul (Virgin Mary)”. Apesar de um álbum bastante positivo, a banda ainda precisa reconciliar-se com o seu sentido de melodia.

Nostradameus - Illusions Parade

If I had to name two very positive surprises in 2009, Nostradameus and Narnia would certainly be my nominations for “best album coming from where you least expected it”.

A fan of these Swedes since 2000’s “Words Of Nostradameus”, I was less impressed with the albums following “The Third Prophecy” from 2003 and the band disappeared from my radar. At least until AFM provided me with the promo to this “Illusion’s Parade”, on sale since November 13th and which I, reluctantly, ended up playing on my mp3.

For me, the main problem in “Illusion’s Parade” predecessors was the loss of melody, with the thrashier elements not sounding very integrated. On the contrary, the album I’m now listening to shows maturity, good composition and is a lot more organic with undeniable atmosphere, comparable to Brainstorm or Evergrey in its gloominess, and mixing Power with Thrash in the best Germanic tradition.

The guitar sound is very intense and the rhythms are mostly very dynamic, technically well achieved, with Freddy Persson (vocals) delivering a very varied and melodic performance. “Walk Of Pain” and “Art Of Deception”, the first two songs, are undoubtedly excellent enough to make you frown and suspect this album is really something else.

Unfortunately, henceforth the album doesn’t feel like it has the same ability to grab the listener, even beginning to sound all quite the same, despite great hooks in “Nothing”, “Eclipse Of The Sun” and the bold “Broken Soul (Virgin Mary)”. Despite being an all around very positive delivery, the band still needs to reconcile a bit more with their sense of melody.
