Há duas semanas o nosso caríssimo Pedro queixava-se que 2009 era um ano que primava pela ausência de inúmeros nomes de peso. O acordo a que chegamos era que a “2ª divisão” estava no entanto a lançar álbuns inacreditavelmente bons. A segunda coisa que o Pedro fez questão de notar é que este não era um ano de metal, mas do Rock e Hard-Rock em particular.

O álbum que suscitou as duas constatações era precisamente este: “The Psychics”.

A história dos Britânicos começa em 1993 com a estreia dos promissores Lionheart, então encabeçados pelo lendário Steve Grimmett, e que se tornou uma espécie de álbum de culto, uma obra-prima obrigatória.

Quinze anos volvidos, os irmãos Owers que faziam parte desse mítico alinhamento original dos Lionheart, voltam com este magistral diamante de Hard-Rock Melódico da mais marcante e profunda identidade Britânica, ou não possuísse aquele Blues e Funk reminiscentes de Led Zeppelin, uma boa medida de Whitesnake, House Of Lords e Thunder para criarem dez composições que constituem um álbum coerente sem no entanto serem iguais entre si. É justo dizer que entre o portento rockeiro de “Portent”, um monstro de riffs demolidores, a melodia mais Funk de “21st Century Whipping Boy”, o Hard-Rock 80’s de “We Rock” e “Time We Tried Again” com um refrão inesquecível, o Blues Rock profundamente 70’s de “Change” e o sleaze de “In The City”, cada música apresenta algo novo e diferente da anterior, agarrando-nos ao longo dos 44 minutos deste fabuloso álbum.

A variedade das músicas e auras aparte, a execução é inacreditável, sendo Steve Owers talvez a maior surpresa, atirando-nos com uma performance vocal polivalente, com resquícios de Robert Plant ou David Coverdale enquanto o irmão faz um trabalho endiabrado na guitarra, entre riffs contundentes, solos expressivos e leads magistrais, cheias de feeling sobre uma secção rítmica sólida e competente.

Tudo junto torna “The Psychics” um estonteante álbum de Hard-Rock, muito capaz de se afirmar como o melhor desse campeonato para este ano e com toda a certeza o tipo de álbum que nunca se repete e gire as vezes que girar, não cansa. Absolutamente inesperado, surpreendente e excepcional.

Two weeks ago our dearly beloved Pedro was complaining that 2009 was a year punctuated by the absence many of the genre’s giants. We agreed though that the 2nd tier was nonetheless releasing remarkable albums. The second thing Pedro noted was this was not a year for Metal but Rock and Hard-Rock more precisely.

The album behind such considerations was this: “The Psychics”.

These Brits’ story starts out back in 1993 with the debut of the promising Lionheart, then leaded by the legendary Steve Grimmett, and that went on to become a cult album, a mandatory masterpiece.

Fifteen years gone by (the album was released back in 2008 for Japan), the Owers brothers, part of that initial Lionheart lineup, come back with this majestic slab of Melodic Hard-Rock of the most undeniable and captivating British pedigree, with the Blues and Funk reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, a good measure of Whitesnake, House Of Lords and Thunder, to create ten songs that make a cohesive album without being equal between themselves. It’s fair it say that between the rocking portent of “Portent” (pun intended), a monster of overwhelming riffing, the Funk melody of “21st Century Whipping Boy”, the 80’s rock of “We Rock” and “Time We Tried Again”, with an unforgettable chorus, the deeply 70’s Blues Rock of “Change” and the sleaze of “In The City”, each song brings something new and different from the one before, grabbing us throughout the 44 minutes duration of this fabulous album.

The variety of songs and auras aside, the execution is unbelievable, Steve Owers perhaps the greatest surprise with his polyvalent vocal delivery, a sort of Robert Plant mixed with David Coverdale, while his brother does a remarkable job in the guitar department, with razor sharp riffing, expressive soloing and majestic leads filled with good taste and feeling over a very solid and tight rhythm section.

Everything brought together makes “The Psychics” a stunning Hard-Rock album, quite capable of standing as the best of its league for the year and in all certainty is the kind of album that never gets old and no matter how many times you spin it, it won’t tire you. Absolutely unexpected, surprising and exceptional.
