Tyr - By The Light Of The Northern Star

Os Feroeses Týr têm um estilo musical muito próprio, com harmonias de guitarras muito reconhecíveis e os cânticos de Heri Joensen ainda mais. O resultado sempre foi algo verdadeiramente único, ainda que exigente de se ouvir e pela altura que “Land” de 2008 me chegou às mãos, a fórmula parecia precisar de afinações e o álbum pareceu-me sumamente brando.

Tudo mudou com “By The Light Of The Northern Star”, que mantém toda a inspiração dos seus antecessores e as influências do folclore Nórdico, mas apresenta claramente um novo passo em frente dos Týr e, quanto a mim, um excelente passo. O álbum apresenta-se mais vigoroso, energético, com tolerável velocidade e músicas como “Hold The Heathen Hammer High” os Týr oferecem daqueles momentos em que se erguem os punhos e nos sentimos orgulhosos, o mesmo valendo para “By Sword In My Hand”, excelente hino de coragem e uma das melhores músicas do álbum.

Assim, mesmo mantendo toda a sua aura progressiva e nível técnico, os Týr não oferecem um álbum exactamente mais “fácil” ou simplista, apenas um onde as virtudes são mais aparentes e encorajam por isso um maior esforço na audição do álbum. Além da bateria acelerada, é na guitarra que se nota uma maior mudança: fortes, imprimindo uma identidade bem mais metálica às músicas, os solos presentes são louváveis, brilhantes, porventura os mais excitantes da sua discografia. Veja-se o caso de “Turid Torkilsdóttir” ou do tema que dá título ao álbum.

“By The Light Of The Northern Star” é um álbum de surpreendente força que acrescenta aos elementos que fazem os Týr únicos um nova vitalidade e arrojo, numa sonoridade claramente metal, ribombante e cativante. Um passo acima de “Land”, este álbum é indispensável aos fãs da banda e parece-me capaz de conquistar mesmo aqueles que de algum modo consideram os Týr enfadonhos. Aqui não o são em momento algum.

Uma última palavra: compreende-se a tentativa de dissuadir os piratas, mas “BEEP” antes de cada voice-over, em música que se ouve ALTO, fere os ouvidos, desconcentra e é sumamente intolerável. Não exagerem. Esta review é feita apenas e só porque adquiri o álbum, porque ele merece ser adquirido.

Feroese Týr have a very original style with guitar harmonies that are quite recognizable and Heri Joensen’s chants even more. The result was always something very unique, even if demanding a lot from the listeners and, by the time “Land” arrived on my doorstep, the formula seemed in need of some tweaking, the album feeling quite bland.

Everything changed with “By The Light Of The Northern Star”, that keeps all the inspiration from its predecessors and the Nordic folklore influences, but is clearly a step forward and, in what I’m concerned, an excellent one. The album is more vigorous, energetic, with tolerable speed and in such songs as “Hold The Heathen Hammer High”, Týr offer the kind of moments when fists rise in the air and we feel real pride, the same going for “By The Sword In My Hand”, an excellent hymn of courage and one of the album’s best.

So, while maintaining the band’s progressive aura and technical level, Týr don’t create an easy or simple album as much as they weave one where its virtues are all the more clear, thus encouraging a deeper commitment into listening to what it has to offer. Besides the fast drumming, it’s in the guitars we hear the greatest change: strong, giving the songs a much more “metal” identity, the soloing commendable, brilliant, probably the most exciting in their whole discography. Take “Turid Torkilsdóttir”, “Into The Storm” or the title-track for example.

“By The Light Of The Nordern Star” is an album of surprising strength that adds to the elements that make Týr unique a new vitality and daringness, with a clearly metal sound, thundering and enticing. A notch above “Land” this is an album not to be missed by the fans and may even conquer those who feel Týr can become dull. Not here, ever.

A final comment: I understand the attempt at dissuading piracy, but a “BEEP” before every voice-over in songs you are listening to LOUD, hurts your ears, breaks your concentration and is quite unbearable. Don’t overdo it. This review is here just because I acquired the album, because it does deserve to be acquired.
