Gamma Ray - To The Metal

Olhando para a história distante e recente dos Germânicos Gamma Ray, consigo ver onde é que para alguns a banda anda distante dos seus momentos de maior inspiração, mas “To The Metal” não é um álbum tão mau quanto o têm pintado. Apesar de nos apresentar uma versão algo simplificada da que é uma das melhores bandas de Power Metal que algum dia existirão, o novo trabalho dos carismáticos Germânicos visita-lhes as raízes pré-Power Metal sem perder a identidade e conseguindo ter, ainda assim, portentosas músicas.

Uma dessas é a veloz e animadora “Rise”, perfeito incentivo ao punho no ar e headbang, realmente o tipo de tema que se espera dos Gamma Ray. Mas não lhe fica atrás “Empathy” que começa o álbum, mais lenta que o habitual na banda, mas com um refrão penetrante. Tal como “To The Metal”, “Empathy” mostra-nos um lado mais épico da banda, menos apostada na velocidade constante e procurando criar alguma atmosfera.

Segue-se-lhe uma mais veloz “All You Need To Know”, que nem teria nada de extraordinário… não fosse o extraordinário da equipa entre Kai Hansen e Michael Kiske que nos debita um refrão inesquecível. E assim nenhum álbum é verdadeiramente mau, pois não? Excelente música.

Sem dúvida “Shine Forever” ilustra bem o regresso da banda a uma era pré-Power Metal… Judas Priest, talvez? As vocalizações certamente invocam Halford, antes de um hipermelódico refrão tão tipicamente Germânico. O mesmo vale para o riff muito 70’s de “Deadlands”.

O grande defeito de “To The Metal” é que se trata de um álbum perfeitamente típico. As melodias são apelativas, o nível musical elevado, com um aceno para a bateria, mas no fundo nada realmente se destaca, nem um riff, um solo verdadeiramente inesquecíveis, mesmo se alguns momentos são realmente explosivos. Os Gamma Ray tentaram – e até certo grau conseguiram – dar-nos ao longo do álbum uma espécie de homenagem ao seu passado, mas uma banda deste calibre pode bem homenagear-se a ela própria.

“To The Metal” é uma dedicatória a um modo de vida, uma afirmação aos fãs, e, não estando perfeito, vale a pena por uma mão cheia de excelentes músicas que não serão consensuais, mas agradarão à maior parte dos fãs da banda.

Gamma Ray - To The Metal

Looking at the band’s distant and closer history, I can see where Gamma Ray’s fans might say the band is far from its moments of greater inspiration, but “To The Metal” isn’t really as bad as some people would have you think. Even if it offers us a simplified version of one of the best Power Metal bands that there will ever be, the new album of the iconic Germans pays homage to their pre-Power Metal roots without losing its identity, all the while offering some stunning tunes.

One such song is the fast and uplifting “Rise”, a perfect incentive to raised fist and some headbanging, truly the kind of song one would expect from Gamma Ray. “Empathy” isn’t any worse, beginning the album in a slower fashion but with an amazing chorus line. Much like “To The Metal”, “Empathy” shows us a more epic side to the band, not so focused on constant speed and seeking to create some atmosphere.

A faster “All You Need To Know” follows, and it wouldn’t be a very special song if it weren’t for the extraordinary team-up between Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske, who gives us an unforgettable chorus line. With songs such as these, no album is really bad, right? Excellent song.

Undoubtedly “Shine Forever” shows well the band’s return to a pre-Power Metal age… Judas Priest, perhaps? The vocals certainly hint at Halford, before a hipermelodic and typically German chorus line. The same remarks go to the very 70’s riff in “Deadlands”.

The one large flaw to “To The Metal” is that it’s a really typically album. Tunes are catchy, the musicianship level high with a special nod to the drumming, but, deep down, nothing really stands out, not a riff, a truly unforgettable solo, even if some moments are really explosive. Gamma Ray tried – and succeeded to a degree – to give us throughout the album a sort of homage to their past, but a band this big might just as well be honoring itself instead.

“To The Metal” is a nod to a way of life, a statement to the fans, and, while not perfect, is certainly worth it thanks to a handful of great songs.
