Angband - Visions Of The Seeker

O Irão não é um país conhecido pela sua música ou altos valores de produção. O mais conhecido artista da grande nação Persa, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, tem falhado em reunir o consenso da crítica com o seu Ayatollah metal algo virulento, mas de letras fracas.

É do Irão que os Angband nos chegam com este seu segundo trabalho, "Visions Of The Seeker", sob a chancela da Pure Steel Records, o que é um indicativo muito claro de que a banda toca Heavy Metal clássico, com fortes nuances Power.

Instrumentalmente, o ponto forte do álbum é mesmo a bateria de Ramin Rahimi, assertiva, rápida quando deve, com algumas batidas orientalizadas. De resto, apesar dos riffs interessantes, as instrumentalizações nunca atingem níveis memoráveis, e os solos - um factor sempre importante num álbum de Heavy Clássico - estão em falta. Finalmente, vocalmente, Ashkan Yazdani tem uma performance apaixonada, mas a sua técnica não é das melhores, nem constante. Todavia, os apoios vocais de fundo acabam por ajudar um pouco situação.

Ao mesmo tempo, "Visions Of The Seeker" sofre de uma produção menos do que perfeita, mas tendo em conta as condições em que o álbum terá sido gravado, o veterano Achim Kohler (Amon Amarth, Edguy, Primal Fear) faz um trabalho soberbo para trazer o álbum à vida. No fim de contas, à medida que vamos avançando na audição, o álbum torna-se mais interessante, apesar das suas fraquezas notórias.

"Visions Of The Seeker" soa a Demo, inexperiência, mas podemos pedir muito mais a uma banda oriunda de um país cujo líder supremo considera a aprendizagem e a prática da música como indo contra os ensinamentos do Corão? As condições em que os Angband lutam para conseguir criar um álbum, apenas as podemos imaginar.

Tudo somado, o segundo álbum dos Iranianos é uma daquelas raras instâncias no Metal em que o seu significado e importância transcendem a qualidade do seu conteúdo. É um desafio a uma fatwa sem sentido, um acto de coragem e amor à camisola. Lá no fundo, não é precisamente essa alma do Heavy Metal?

Iran isn't a country known for its music or high production values. The country's most famous performer, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has failed to gather critical consensus with its rather virulent Ayatollah Metal and poor lyrics.

But it's from Iran that Angband hail with their second album, "Visions Of The Seeker", under the banner of Pure Steel Records, a very good hint that the band plays old school Heavy Metal with strong Power Metal influences.

Instrumentally, the album's strong point is indeed Ramin Rahimi's drumming, assertive, fast, and with plenty of oriental beats. As for the rest, even with some interesting riffing, the instrumentals are never memorable or quite inspired, and the solos - something very important in classic Heavy Metal - are missing. Finally, Ashkan Yazdani's vocals are passionate, but his technique isn't the best or even consistent. Still, the background vocals aid the situation a bit.

At the same time "Visions Of The Seeker" suffers from a below average production but, taking into consideration the conditions in which the album was probably recorded, veteran Achim Kohler (Amon Amarth, Edguy, Primal Fear) does a splendid job of bringing the album to life. Indeed, as we move deeper into it, it becomes more interesting, in spite of its notorious flaws.

"Visions Of The Seeker" sounds like a Demo and inexperienced, but could we demand more from a band hailing from a country whose supreme leader considers learning and performing music as going against the teachings o Islam? The conditions in which the band had to work to create an album, we can only imagine.

All things together, the Iranians' second album is one of those rare events in metal where its meaning and importance transcend the quality or the contents. It defies a senseless fatwa, it's an act of courage and love of the art. Deep down, isn't that the heart and soul of Heavy Metal?
