Athorn - Phobia

Os Athorn são uma banda com dois anos, oriunda de Hannover, mas não estamos perante músicos inexperientes, já que pelo menos Carsten Frank (Galloglass, Human Fortress) deverá ser conhecido dos metaleiros mais afoitos. "Phobia" é a sua estreia após o EP "Livable Hatred", lançado em 2009 e chega às lojas hoje, dia 17 de Setembro.

A sonoridade que os Germânicos nos apresentam é apreciavelmente pesada, apesar de manter uma forte componente melódica onde são muito claras as influências Progressivas e de Thrash, ao mesmo tempo que Frank surge com vocalizações muito pouco usuais na sua carreira. O resultado não é de modo algum o Power Thrash que se espera de bandas como Rage, antes um Metal Moderno de pintalgados Nevermore ou o Melodeath de Mercenary.

Carsten Frank surpreende pela versatilidade, sem dúvida. Habituado a um estilo mais melódico, consegue muito competentemente agarrar as partes que requerem vocalizações harsh mais intensas, integrando-se bem na sonoridade da banda que é claramente competente. Infelizmente, por uma questão de gosto pessoal, o resultante Metal Moderno não me cai no goto e por vezes chega a passar a linha separatória do Nu-Metal, o que ainda me agrada menos.

No entanto, se este tipo de sonoridade vos é cara, "Phobia" é um álbum forte e maduro, que merece ser adicionado à vossa colecção. Mas só se este é o vosso campeonato; os fãs de metal mais tradicional não encontrarão aqui muito que os empolgue.

Athorn - Phobia

Athorn hail from Hannover and even if they were formed only two years ago, they are in no way an inexperienced band, since at the very least many metallers will recognize Carsten Frank (Galloglass, Human Fortress). "Phobia" is their LP debut after the 2009 EP "Livable Hatred", and will be found on sale starting today, September 17th.

The sound the Germans bring us is really heavy, even if they maintain a strong melodic component, like any German band should, really, and you'll clearly notice Prog and Thrash influences, while at the same time Carsten brings forth some vocals you wouldn't expect if you follow his career. The result is none of the Power Thrash one would get from Rage. Instead, it's Modern Metal in the vein of Nevermore, with a bit of Mercenary's Melodic Death.

Carsten Frank does surprise us with his versatility. More used to a more melodic style, he perfectly nails the parts that require intense harsh vocals, fitting well within the band's sound, which comes out sounding very competent. Unfortunately, and for a matter of personal taste alone, the resulting Modern Metal is not my cup of tea and it sometimes gets clearly Nu-Metal, which pleases me even less.

But if this kind of sound is to your liking, "Phobia" is a strong and mature album that deserves finding a place in your collection. But only if this is your kind of stuff; fans of more traditional metal will not find much that will excite them here.
