Darkseed - Poison Awaits

Os Darkseed são uma banda de Metal Gótico já bastante experiente, mas "Poison Awaits" é o seu primeiro álbum desde "Ultimate Darkness" de 2005 e apresenta a primeira gravação do novo vocalista, Harald Winkler.

Para os fãs da banda Germânica, abdicar de um vocalista com quem partilharam 6 álbuns pode parecer algo difícil de digerir, mas Winkler, é uma adição sólida ao microfone, com uma voz morna e variada, um pouco manchada apenas por um sotaque que de qualquer modo mal se nota. Consegue abrir bem a voz, ou afundá-la em densa escuridão, e também sabe rosnar quando necessário.

Fora isso, "Poison Awaits" apresenta os elementos normais para a banda, incluíndo teclas atmosférica e elementos electrónicos que têm vindo a surgir nos álbuns mais recentes dos Darkseede um Metal Gótico sombrio, mas melódico, romântico, por vezes tenso, que nos envolve e puxa. É realmente o tipo de Metal Gótico que me agrada e começa bem com "Roads" e "Incinerate", mas acaba ainda melhor, com a soberba e dinâmica "King In The Sun", onde as teclas dão um grande contributo e onde Harald usa as suas vocalizações mais graves, que são de longe as minhas favoritas. Onde a banda também se sai exemplarmente é nos temas mais complexos e ameaçadores como "All Is Vanity", com os seus coros sobre vozes sussurradas e furiosas; ou nos temas melódicos e melancólicos como "Seeds Of Sorrow" ou emocionais como "Timeless Skies", com as suas passagens faladas.

Do mais adocicado, ao mais pesado, "Poison Awaits" é um fortíssimo álbum de Metal Gótico que vale mais sob a superfície do que poderia ser imediatamente aparente. O meu conselho é que se não o notarem à primeira audição, insistam, que este é um álbum para fermentar até o degustarem como merece.

Darkseed - Poison Awaits

Darkseed are an already experienced Gothic Metal band, but "Poison Awaits" is their first album since 2005's "Ultimate Darkness" and the first featuring new singer, Harald Winkler.

For those who follow the Germans, letting go of a singer they have enjoyed for six albums may be something hard to digest, but Winkler is a solid performer behind the mic, with a warm and varied voice, a bit marred by a hardly noticeable accent, and that's not much of a problem. He can open up his pipes, drown them in thick darkness and even growl a bit when it's needed.

So, "Poison Awaits" brings us the band's usual elements, including the atmospheric keyboards and the electronic elements that have been showing up in their later albums, and deliver a Gothic Metal that is somber, but melodic, romantic, sometimes tense, that envelops and entices us. This is indeed the kind of Goth Metal I enjoy and it starts out well with "Roads" and "Incinerate", but closes even better with the superb and dynamic "King In The Sun" where the keyboards sound very well and Harald uses his lower tones, which are by far the ones I like the most. Where the band also does very well is in the more complex and menacing tunes like "All Is Vanity", with its choruses over whispered and angry vocals; or the melodic and melancholic songs like "Seeds of Sorrow" and the emotional "Timeless Skies" with its spoken passages.

From the sweetest to the heaviest, "Poison Awaits" is a very strong Gothic Metal album that is worth a lot more than what is immediately apparent. My advice would be that, if you don't realize it after the first listen, insist, because this is an album that should be allowed to brew before you flavor it like it deserves.
