Helstar - Glory Of Chaos

Dificilmente o regresso dos Americanos Helstar poderia ter sido melhor, quando em 2008 editam "The King Of Hell", após mais de uma década de ausência. Na altura acabou por ser considerado o álbum do ano pelos votadores da rockheavyloud, uma distinção cheia de responsabilidade a que a banda corresponde agora em pleno com "Glory Of Chaos".

A receita que tornou "The King Of Hell" um álbum sublime continua aqui intacta, em instrumentais de velocidade demolidora e assoberbante poder, encabeçados pelas vocalizações ousadas de James Rivera. A banda é tecnicamente sublime e entre agressão pura, riffs e ritmos intrincados, solos devastadores, "Glory Of Chaos" é um ataque sónico impiedoso, um assalto irresistível, um expoente máximo na velha arte de fazer Heavy Metal capaz de fazer troar as trombetas do inferno e demolir muralhas.

A exemplificar perfeitamente o equilíbrio entre agressão e técnica, e ao mesmo tempo a variedade de que poucas bandas são capazes de atingir, "Pandemonium" é o meu tema favorito no álbum, começando com um curto momento de guitarra, passando para um galope da bateria, antes de se deixar acalmar numa estrutura rítmica francamente de se ir às lágrimas, com o que é porventura o melhor riff do álbum, quiçá de tudo o que ouvi em 2010.

Mas depois temos "Monarch Of Bloodshed", mais lenta, mas com o peso de um tanque de guerra; a dilacerante "Bone Crusher", ou a sombria "Summer Of Hate" com um desses riffs arrastados e ameaçadores que fazem tremer os ossos. Enfim, destacar temas é quase impossível num álbum que fica melhor à medida que passa mais tempo no leitor e é essencialmente carregar no play e ouvir de uma ponta à outra numa sucessão de Power Speed irrepreensível e indispensável.

Finalmente, nada me chocou mais do que ver este álbum filtrado na net, um mês antes do seu lançamento e, fora toda a retórica pró ou anti-pirataria, os Helstar deram o litro para trazer aos fãs um álbum fantástico. Se esperam que os músicos invistam milhares para alugarem bons estúdios e nos trazerem bons álbuns para depois não os comprarmos sob um qualquer argumento que faz do download um acto de liberdade, estão enganados. Piratear este álbum não nos torna Robins dos Bosques, os Helstar não são gigantes ávidos de dinheiro, são tipos normais, com família e contas para pagar e se já ouviram o álbum sabem tão bem quanto eu que vale cada tostão. Não os verão com séries de televisão, telemóveis ou rebuçados; só ganharão dinheiro com concertos e vendas de álbuns e se em Portugal não se venderem álbuns, não esperem vê-los em concerto por cá nos próximos séculos.

Como tive a oportunidade de dizer a alguém prejudicado por esta fuga, os fãs de Helstar merecem confiança, são fiéis e respeitam a banda. Saberão muito bem recompensar e apoiar aqueles que lhes dão música feita com muito suor e esforço. Não provem que estou errado.

Helstar - Glory Of Chaos

The return of Helstar could hardly have been any better when in 2008 they released "The King Of Hell", ending over a decade of silence. At the time the album took our readers' vote for best of the year, an award that brought with it responsibility to which the band lived up to with "Glory Of Chaos".

The recipe that made "The King Of Hell" a sublime album is back, intact, in instrumentals of crushing speed and overwhelming might, headed by James Rivera's bold vocals. The band is technically amazing and the between the pure aggression, intricate riffing and rhythms, devastating soloing, "Glory Of Chaos" is a merciless sonic attack, an overwhelming assault, a pinnacle in the old art of making Heavy Metal of the kind that well make sound the trumpets of hell and walls shudder and crumble.

Perfectly illustrative of the balance between aggression and technique, and at the same time a proof of a variety few bands can achieve, "Pandemonium" is my favorite track, beginning with a short guitar prelude, passing to a galloping drumming, before it settles for a structure that will bring tears to your eyes, with what is probably the best riffing in the album, perhaps of all of what I have heard in 2010.

And then we have "Monarch Of Bloodshed", slower, but with the mass of a main battle tank; the tearing "Bone Crusher", or the dark "Summer Of Hate" with one of those dragging and menacing riffs that make your bones shiver. Alas, highlighting songs if almost impossible in an album that sounds better the more time it spends on your stereo and is essentially an album to press play and listen from top to bottom in a relentless succession of irreprehensible and mandatory Power Speed.

On a final note, nothing left me more shocked than this album's leakage into the internet, a whole month before its release and, all the pro or anti-piracy rhetoric, Helstar gave their best to bring their fans one hell of an amazing album. If you expect musicians to invest thousands to enter good studios and deliver good albums which we then won't buy under some pretext that makes downloading an act of freedom, then you're wrong. Pirating this album doesn't make you all Robin Hood, Helstar aren't money hungry giants, they're regular guys with families to sustain and bills to pay and you have already heard this album, you'll know as well as I do that it's worth every cent. You won't see them cash cowing TV series, mobile phones or candy; the only money they'll make is through selling albums and playing live, but if you don't buy their records, don't expect them to come to Portugal in the next century. Sales are the barometer.

As I've told someone who will be hurt by this leak, Helstar fans deserve all our trust, they are loyal and respect the band. They will know well how to reward and support those who bring them music made with a lot of sweat and effort. Please don't prove me wrong about this.
