Mystery - One Among The Living

Por diversas razões, Rock Progressivo não é um estilo que figure frequentemente nas páginas da RHL, pelo que quando a webzine recebeu a promoção deste álbum, não pude deixar de o agarrar imediatamente, e desde já agradeço ao talentoso Michel St-Père pela oportunidade.

Os Canadianos Mystery, no activo desde 1986, são efectivamente o filho querido deste magnífico músico, contando nas suas fileiras com um magistral Benoit David, actual vocalista dos Yes, e com o experiente baterista Steve Gagné, além de um alinhamento interessantíssimo de convidados, entre os quais os que poderão ser mais familiares são Oliver Wakeman (Yes, Oliver Wakeman Band, Strawbs), John Jowitt (IQ, Arena, Ark), Daryl Stuermer (Genesis, Phil Collins), entre outros.

Todas as boas indicações de álbuns anteriores e do alinhamento de "One Among The Living" só poderiam resultar num álbum fenomenal, onde a atmosfera criada é sempre sublime e bem conseguida, hipnotizante, com uma genialidade intrínseca a todos os níveis. Poder-se-ia pensar nuns Yes mais agressivos, com um pouco da melancolia de The Moody Blues e a inteligência de Genesis, e tudo isto bem de início com temas como "Between Love And Hate" ou "Till The Truth Comes Out" a serem a mais pura definição de "queixos no chão", incorporando tudo o que há de elegante e majestoso na sonoridade de Mystery.

Mas entre a melancolia de "Till The Truth Comes Out" e a melodia da extensa "Through Different Eyes", "One Among The Living" consegue surpreender nas mudanças de atmosfera, lançando-nos quase no fim com uma apaixonante "The Falling Man", um sombrio e poderoso tema com fortíssima componente Doom (Black Sabbath, alguém?) , linhas de baixo omnipresentes e coros quase desesperantes. Benoit David é simplesmente inacreditável.

E inacreditável é também quão acessível e memorável o álbum é, apesar da riqueza e complexidade instrumental. Uma composição ao mais alto nível, letras poderosas, solos belíssimos, teclas imaginativas, baixo e bateria técnicos, onde não faltam os riffs mais pesados, fazem de "One Among The Living" uma peça magistral de Neo Prog intensamente melódico e capaz de levar qualquer um às lágrimas, tudo isto a servir de fundo a uma das mais impressionantes vozes do rock actual, Benoit David. Ao contrário de muitos álbuns de tendências progressivas, a complexidade e elaboração não se tornam excessivas ou pretensiosas; cada pormenor está ao serviço da música, da atmosfera, da beleza e elegância, sempre com sentido e pleno sucesso nos seus objectivos.

"One Among The Living" é um álbum perto da perfeição, embrulhado num folheto de beleza fotográfica nos locais mais inesperados, como uma barraca ou uma lixeira. Indispensável a todos os fãs de Neo Prog com pintalgados das bandas seminais no Rock Progressivo, até aos que preferem outros quadrantes mais pesados também. De facto, indispensável para todos os que procuram genialidade em forma de música e porventura o melhor álbum que ouvi ao longo do ano.

Mystery - One Among The Living

For several reasons, Prog Rock isn't a style RHL features frequently, so when the webzine received a press release for this album, I couldn't help but going after it, and I would like to begin by thanking talented Michel St-Père for this opportunity.

Canada's Mystery, formed in 1986, are indeed the brainchild of this splendid musician, having in its ranks the majestic Benoit David, presently Yes's new singer, and the experienced drummer Steve Gagné, plus a very interesting lineup of guests, the ones more familiar being perhaps Oliver Wakeman (Yes, Oliver Wakeman Band, Strawbs), John Jowitt (IQ, Arena, Ark), Daryl Stuermer (Genesis, Phil Collins), among others.

All the credentials of previous albums and the lineup in "One Among The Living" could only result in a phenomenal album, where the atmosphere is always sublime and well thought out, enticing, with an underlying genius at every level. We could think of heavier Yes, some of The Moody Blues melancholy and the intelligence in Genesis, all very clear from the beginning with songs such as "Between Love And Hate" or "Till The Truth Comes Out", the purest definition of jaw-dropping, incorporating all that is elegant and majestic in Mystery's sound.

But between the melancholy of "Till The Truth Comes Out" and the melody of the extensive "Through Different Eyes" or even the uplifting "Sailing On A Wing", "One Among The Living" can surprise in the mood changes, with a passionate "The Falling Man", a dark and powerful song with a very strong Doom edge (Black Sabbath, anyone?), omnipresent bass lines and somewhat stressing choirs. Benoit David is unbelievable.

Unbelievable also is how accessible and memorable the album is, in spite of the instrumental wealth and complexity. Top notch compositions, powerful lyrics, solos of sheer beauty, imaginative keyboards, technical bass and drumming, where the heavier riffing isn't absent, make "One Among The Living" a masterful album of intensely melodic Neo Pro, quite capable of bringing you to tears, all of it as the perfect tapestry for one of rock's best vocals right now, Benoit David. Unlike many albums of progressive tendencies, the complex and elaborate arrangements don't turn out excessive or pretentious; each little detail is at the service of the song, the atmosphere, the beauty and elegance, always with a sense of purpose and complete success in its aims.

"One Among The Living" sounds very close to perfection, wrapped up with a booklet of photographic beauty at the most unexpected places, like a ruin or a dump site. Imperative to all Neo Prog fans who enjoy the seminal bands in the genre, and also to those who enjoy heavier Prog. Indeed, imperative to all those seeking for genius in the form of music, and perhaps the best album I've heard all year long.
