Sebastien - Tears Of White Roses

"Tears Of White Roses", dos Checos Sebastien, é uma das mais estonteantes surpresas que tive o prazer de ouvir este ano, e de início nem me tinha apercebido do que tinha entre mãos, apesar das referências com que me chegou.

Convenhamos que há que haver algo de muito especial num álbum de estreia que reúne convidados como Amanda Somerville (Aina, Avantasia, Kiske/Somerville), Apollo Papathanasio (Evil Masquerade, Firewind, Spiritual Beggars, Time Requiem), Doogie White (Cornerstone, ex-Rainbow, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Fabio Leone (Rhapsody Of Fire, Vision Divine), Mike DiMeo (The Lizards, ex-Masterplan, ex-Riot), Tore Moren (Jorn) e Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex-Helloween), também produtor, e que acaba lançado pela Escape Music, uma editora com faro para apanhar melodias.

Sem dúvida um elenco de luxo, de meter inveja a qualquer mega projecto, ao mesmo tempo poderia elevar demasiado as expectativas, impondo à banda uma grande responsabilidade. Contudo, apesar deste ser um álbum de estréia, George Rain (voz, guitarra) e Andy Mons (guitarra) já são experientes e encararam o desafio de frente, criando um álbum fantástico.

Apresentando-nos um Hardrock diversificado com forte componente Power Metal e Progressivas, os Sebastien parecem reunir o pedigree de bandas como Pink Cream 69, Masterplan, Serenity, Helloween, Avantasia, até tardios Sonata Arctica. A mistura é tão rica e bem articulada que o álbum entra sem nos percebermos da qualidade do que estamos a ouvir, porque apesar de intensamente melódico e memorável, não é o tipo de álbum fácil que entra à primeira e se esquece.

Começando com a muito bem construída "Museé Du Satan Rouge" com um estonteante solo, o álbum segue para a participação (algo escassa) de Somerville em "Femme Fatale", mas é com "Dorian" (sobre O Retrato de Dorian Gray) que o álbum faz caír tudo ao chão. Um tema inacreditavelmente bom, que começa com teclas solenes intercaladas com riffs bem assertivos, é uma música régia com uma construção irrepreensível, um refrão de bradar aos céus e mais um solo electrizante. A toada grandiosa continua "Remiel In Flames", em boa medida por um muito talentoso recurso das teclas para sonoridades e coloridos de fundo.

Sendo realmente difícil fazer destaques num álbum tão coeso e bem conseguido, esta porção central, incluindo "Tears Of White Roses", "Phoenix Rising" e "Voices In Your Heart", é realmente fortíssima. Os diversos convidados dão contribuições significativas, mas num álbum com tanto nome sonante, tudo despido, valerá a música dos Sebastien por si só, sem todo este chamariz?

Em minha opinião, removidos os convidados, continuaríamos a ter letras interessantes (cortesia do poeta Jan Petriko, também colaborador dos Asmodeus), instrumentais brilhantes e passagens vocais memoráveis. Claramente, não são os convidados que fazem de "Tears Of White Roses" um álbum de excepção. Pelo contrário a sua presença será o seu voto de confiança num trabalho cujo mérito terão reconhecido de avanço.

Com um dos mais memoráveis álbuns do ano, os Sebastien monstram possuír tanto o talento, quanto o toque de Midas e deixam as melhores referências para um futuro repleto de álbuns de altíssima qualidade. "Tears Of White Roses", by Czech Republic's Sebastien, is one of the most stunning surprises I've had the time of listening to this year, while at first not even realizing the sheer quality of what I had in hand, in spite of the credentials with which the album came.

Really, there must be something very special with a debut album that gathers guests like Amanda Somerville (Aina, Avantasia, Kiske/Somerville), Apollo Papathanasio (Evil Masquerade, Firewind, Spiritual Beggars, Time Requiem), Doogie White (Cornerstone, ex-Rainbow, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Fabio Leone (Rhapsody Of Fire, Vision Divine), Mike DiMeo (The Lizards, ex-Masterplan, ex-Riot), Tore Moren (Jorn) and Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex-Helloween), also the producer, to end up released by Escape Music, a label with the nose for picking out melodies.

Without a doubt a luxury lineup, enough to cause the envy of many a super project, at the same time it could raise expectations too high, imposing on the band too much responsibility. But, even though this is a debut album, George Rain (vocals, guitars) and Andy Mons (guitar) are experienced musicians and faced the challenge head-on, creating a fantastic album.

Bringing us a diversified Hardrock of strong Power Metal and Progressive influences, Sebastien appear to bring together elements of such bands as Pink Cream 69, Masterplan, Serenity, Helloween, Avantasia and even later Sonata Arctica. The mix is so rich and well articulated that the album flows without you noticing just how good it is, because even though it's intensely melodic and memorable, it's not the kind of easy album to stick at first attempt and then be quickly forgotten.

Starting out with the very well constructed "Museé Du Satan Rouge", with a tremendous solo, the album moves on to Somerville's (somewhat scarce) guest starring in "Femme Fatale", but it's with "Dorian" (about The Portrait Of Dorian Gray) that the album brings you to your knees. An unbelievably good song, opening up with solemn keyboards alternating with strong riffing, this is a majestic tune with an irreprehensible composition, an overwhelming chorus line and yet another amazing solo. The grandeur continues with "Remiel In Flames", in good measure because of the talented use of the keyboards to create interesting background tones.

Being really hard to point out highlights in such a coherent and well done album, the mid section, including "Tears Of White Roses", "Phoenix Rising" and "Voices In Your Heart", is really extremely strong. The many guests give significant contributions to the whole, but all that removed, is Sebastien's music worthy on its own?

My deepest opinion is that, guests aside, we would still have the interesting lyrics (courtesy of poet Jan Petriko, also a writer for Asmodeus), brilliant instrumentals and memorable vocal lines. It's clear that it's not the guests that make "Tears Of White Roses" an amazing album. Instead, their presence here is their vote of trust in a work whose merit they probably recognised in advance.

With one of the year's most memorable albums, Sebastien show both the talent and the Midas touch, leaving the best possible references for a future filled with high quality albums.
