Stratosphere - Fire Flight

Goran Edman é de certeza um nome que muitos reconhecerão (Yngwie Malmsteen, Kharma, etc.), e nem todos gostarão. De facto, a sua passagem pelo mago Sueco da guitarra não foi das melhores, mas o homem tem uma excelente voz e a sua performance em "Fire Flight" é de excepção, ou não estivesse ele a jogar em casa, no que é um álbum de AOR.

Os Stratosphere são o projecto de Jeppe Lund, teclista sobre o qual não parece haver grande currículo disponível, mas cujo talento é muito aparente neste seu álbum de estréia, não simplesmente nas teclas, mas na composição também. Apesar de nem sempre se encontrar ao nível mais elevado, "Fire Flight" apresenta-nos apesar de tudo um conjunto apreciável de bons temas de AOR e metal melódico de traços neoclássicos, reminiscente de Royal Hunt, Ten, etc.

Em termos sonoros os melhores temas são os que têm uma sonoridade mais expansiva e endiabrada, como inebriante "The Battle Within". Mas logo de início, com "Russian Summer", o álbum promete. Goran Edman tem uma voz cristalina que me parece controlar melhor que no passado e chega a ter um toque que lembra Glenn Hughes, o que só lhe fica bem. Curiosamente o álbum tem também dois temas instrumentais, "Fire Flight" e "Rendezvous", onde a mestria de Lund sobressai, tal como a alma neoclássica do guitarrista Jonas Larsen. Alucinantes, infecciosos, os dois temas instrumentais são sem dúvida excelentes e pontos altos incontornáveis no álbum.

Com performances estelares e alguns temas muito bem conseguidos, "Fire Flight" é um sólido primeiro álbum e um que deixa excelentes indicações para o futuro. Aguarda-se, portanto, o segundo esforço dos Suecos!

Stratosphere - Fire Flight

Goran Edman is certainly a name many will be familiar with (Yngwie Malmsteen, Kharma, etc.), and not everybody will like it. Indeed, his stint with the Swedish guitar master was probably not the best, but he has an excellent voice and his performance in "Fire Flight"is exceptional, unsurprisingly, since he's playing at home, in an AOR album.

Stratosphere are the brainchild of keyboardist Jeppe Lund, about whom I know nothing, but his talent is obvious in this debut, not simply in the keyboards, but as a composer also. Even if the album isn't always at its highest level, "Fire Flight" presents us with a respectable number of good songs in the field of AOR and melodic metal with neoclassical elements in the vein of Royal Hunt, Ten, etc.

The best songs are the ones that are more expansive and energetic, like the intoxicating "The Battle Within", with an arena rock atmosphere to it. But the album opener, "Russian Winter", the album shows a lot of promise. Goran Edman has a crystal clear voice he seems to be in greater control of and he even sounds a bit like Glenn Hughes at times, something which is really good. Curiously, the album also has two instrumentals, "Fire Flight" and "Rendezvous", where Lund's mastery shows up well, much like guitarist Jonas Larsen's neoclassic soul. Wild, infectious, the two songs are undoubtedly excellent and two of the albums highlights.

With stellar performances and some well achieved songs, "Fire Flight" is a solid debut that leaves very good credentials for the future. We are now awaiting the Scandinavians' second album!
