Warcry - Revenge In Blood

"True" Metal... o que dizer sobre esta proclamação?

Num género fermentado ao longo de décadas, por vezes reinventado de modo grosseiro, é bom ver que as raízes e os pioneiros não caíram no esquecimento, principalmente quando a lembrança vem de bandas jovens como os Warcry, que apesar de tudo já têm 9 anos de existência, se contarmos com a sua formação em 2001 sob o nome de Heiligs Blechle.

"Revenge In Blood" é o segundo álbum da formação (3º se contarmos com a produção dos Heiligs Blechle) e vai beber imenso aos pioneiros de fim dos anos 70 e início dos 80's, desde o Thrash e Death, ao Heavy Metal, encontrando-se reminiscências de bandas como Venom, Omen, Cirith Ungol, Manowar, etc. Daqui resultam alguns temas bons e outros realmente excelentes, como "Banshee" ou "Pure Force Of Steel". Não faltam solos arrogantes e convites ao headbang, é a verdade.

Contudo, este é um álbum inexperiente e pouco coerente. Em primeiro lugar, a música parece estar por todo o lado, os temas chegam a ser desconexos como se tivessem de encaixar todos os clichés possíveis na sua duração, e as influências não são realmente unificadas. Depois há a vocalização confusa de "The Almighty". Por toda a versatilidade que mostra, além de ainda estar muito verde, por vezes mostra uma semelhança tremenda com Tim Baker (Cirith Ungol), outras vezes aproxima-se de Cronos, outras é outra coisa qualquer, até se perder no meio de tanta variedade e acabarmos por não perceber qual é de facto a voz de "The Almighty". O mais perturbador é que, frequentemente exagera os esganiçados, algo à semelhança de Gerrit P. Mutz (Sacred Steel). A diferença é que este último, e a banda, são bem mais coesos e têm já um nome e uma identidade cimentados.

Finalmente, a produção deixa muito a desejar, mesmo para um álbum "true", cuja sonoridade se quer crua. O baixo e a bateria estão muito abafados, há no bombo uma reverberância por vezes difícil de aguentar até.

Os Warcry sabem claramente fazer álbuns com todo o espírito do Metal Clássico, genuíno, puro, honesto e com muita convicção, resultando num belo desfile de Metal com muito amor à camisola, mas precisam delinear bem melhor o caminho que querem trilhar, arranjar algum norte, uma sonoridade mais própria, ou não sei se vão vingar. Como estão, a incoerência torna muito difícil conseguir apreciar o álbum como um todo.

"True" Metal... what to say about it?

In a genre that has been brewing for decades, sometimes even grossly reinvented, it's good to see the roots and the pioneers aren't lost, mostly when the homage comes from young bands such as Warcry, who are nonetheless 9 years old, if we count the years under the name of Heiligs Blechle, a rather less sounding name and more difficult to pronounce at that.

"Revenge In Blood" is their second album (3rd if we count with what they did as Heiligs Blechle) and drinks well from the late 70's and early 80's pioneers, from Thrash and Death, to Heavy Metal, with reminiscences from Venom, Omen, Cirith Ungol, Manowar, etc. This results in some good and some really great songs like "Banshee" and "Pure Force Of Steel". In fact, there are plenty of bold solos and headband invitations.

Still, this is a rather inexperienced and incoherent album. First of all, the music is all over the place, the songs feel scrappy like they were made to incorporate every possible cliché, and the influences they carry aren't really unified. Then we have the confused vocals by "The Almighty". For all the versatility he shows, besides being too green, he sometimes sounds very close to Tim Baker (Cirith Ungol), and sometimes is closer to Cronos, and on other occasions he sounds like pretty much everything else, until he gets lost in all that variety and we end up not knowing how "The Almighty" actually sounds like. Worse, he frequently goes over the top, a bit like Gerrit P. Mutz (Sacred Steel). The crucial difference is that the later and his band are more coherent and have a more solid identity.

Lastly, the production leaves a lot to be desired, even for a "true" album whose sound we want raw. The bass and the drums are too muffled, there's even a tough to handle woofer reverberation in the later.

Warcry clearly know how to do albums with all the spirit of Classic Heavy Metal, true, unadulterated, honest and very passionate, resulting in a nice parade of Metal with love for the art, but they really need to get a heading, orientation, a sound more of their own, or I don't know if they will conquer their niche. As it stands, its incoherence makes it very tough to enjoy the album as a whole.
