Epysode - Obsessions

Se me perguntarem como gosto do meu metal progressivo, responderei sem hesitações que o aprecio duro e sombrio, gélido e com um carácter quase esquizofrénico, mas sempre capaz de manter o interesse e a coerência. Pensem por exemplo em Beyond Twilight ou Communic.

Então quando me chegou às mãos a estreia dos Epysode, dei por mim no 7º céu, muito antes de ter carregado no play. Um álbum conceptual, "Obsessions" é uma viagem a uma mente sombria pelos olhos de um profiler durante uma investigação de diversos homicídios, "cold cases" em que crianças de 9 anos desaparecem e os seus pais são encontrados assassinados... ao longo de cem anos. O conceito desenvolve-se para se cobrir de uma aura de loucura, fobia e obsessões.

Se o enredo malévolo fez vibrar a minha costela devota de thrillers e policiais, depois li o elenco. Entre outros, o álbum conta com os talentos de Kristoffer Gildenlöw e Léo Margarit (Pain Of Salvation), um coro infantil dirigido pela grandiosa Magali Luyten (Virus IV), além de Tommy Hansen, com todas as guitarras a cargo de Samuel Arkan (Virus IV). Já o elenco propriamente dito compõe-se de:

Lembram-se de Beyond Twilight e Communic? Precisamente por Kelly Carpenter e Oddleif Stensland. Com expectativas assim, carrega-se no play com muito medo e...

... e cai-se de joelhos. "Obsessions" rebenta-nos na alma com riffs cortantes e um ritmo duro, pesado, mas é Kelly Carpenter que abre realmente as hostilidades com "First Blood". O homem é puro mal na voz, mas quando a ele se juntam todos os outros vocalistas, esta torna-se uma das mais colossais músicas que ouvi em tempos recentes. E logo a seguir, que absolutamente genial interacção com Magali Luyten em "Obsessions".

São menos de dez minutos e apetece erguer este álbum à categoria de grandiosidade musical do ano. Mas por tudo o que é sagrado, ouçam-no até ao fim. A opinião não mudará. "Obsessions" é um álbum de inacreditável qualidade, capaz de rivalizar com o mais alto que tem vindo a ser feito por colossos como Ayreon, Vanden Plas, Communic, Beyond Twilight, e de lutar taco a taco com qualquer álbum conceptual de que consigam lembrar-se.

Fantasmagórico e sinistro, possuidor de uma atmosfera de gelar o sangue e inebriar a mente, "Obsessions" é um exercício de agressão e dureza ao qual não faltam os pormenores de brilhantismo musical ou os momentos de mais puro deleite. É-me dificil conceptualizar um álbum ao longo de todo o ano que tenha conseguido criar algo tão inesperado e poderoso, talvez com a excepção do mais recente trabalho dos Sons Of Seasons, mas ainda assim a solidez, coesão e capacidade para arrastar o ouvinte para um mundo de sombras e loucura completamente apaixonante, de que gozam os Epysode, está num nível só seu.

Momentos há em que nada mais resta, senão debruçarmo-nos na mais submissa vénia à qualidade musical do álbum. Veja-se o portentoso início de "Once Chance" e o imenso confronto visceral entre Carpenter, Stensland e Luyten. Não é possível, não é concebível, que um álbum tenha não só uma música deste calibre, mas uma mão cheia.

Demolidor e impiedoso, "Obsessions" é sem qualquer reserva a mais brilhante peça musical de que poderão usufruir todos aqueles que gostarem de Metal Progressivo sombrio e sinistro.

Estou rendido, e o mais inquestionavelmente conquistado por este gigantesco exemplo musical de genialidade.

Epysode - Obsessions

If you were to ask me how I like my Progressive Metal, I would promptly reply I enjoy it hard and dark, with a schizophrenic character if possible, but always capable of maintaining interest and coherence. Think about Beyond Twilight or Communic.

So, when I got hold of Epysode's debut, I was in high heaven, long before I even pressed the play button. A conceptual album, "Obsessions" is a journey into a dark mind through the eyes of a profiler investigating a string of homicides where 9 year old children disappear and their parents are found murdered... spanning some 100 years. The concept will develop to cover itself in an aura of madness, phobia and obsessions.

If the malevolent plot had me thrilled thanks to my love for thrillers and horror novels, I then read the cast. Among others, the album counts on the talents of Kristoffer Gildenlöw and Léo Margarit (Pain Of Salvation), a child's choir directed by the great Magali Luyten (Virus IV), besides Tommy Hansen, with all the guitars done by Samuel Arkan (Virus IV). As for the cast itself, we have:

Now do you remember how I mentioned Beyond Twilight and Communic? Precisely because of Kelly Carpenter and Oddleif Stensland. With such high expectations, you press play with a lot of fear and...

... you fall to your knees. "Obsessions" blows up in your soul with tearing riffs and a pounding rhythm, but it's Kelly Carpenter who initiates the onslaught in "First Blood". The man is pure evil in his vocals, but when he is joined by all the other singers, this is, hands down, one of the most colossal songs I've heard in recent times. And right after this one we get a pure genius duet between Kelly and Magali in "Obsessions".

In less than 10 minutes you're ready to lift this album up as the year's most shinning example of musical grandeur. But for all that is sacred, listen to it up until the end. You won't change your mind. "Obsessions" is an album of unbelievable quality, capable of rivaling the best that has been done by Ayreon, Vanden Plas, Communic, Beyond Twilight, and going head to head with any conceptual album you can think of.

Ghostly and sinister, possessing an atmosphere capable of freezing your blood and intoxicating your mind, "Obsessions" is an exercise in aggression that lacks no examples of musical brilliance or the moments of pure delight. It's really hard for me to think of a single album throughout the whole year that might have created something so unexpected and powerful, with perhaps the exception of Sons Of Seasons's new album, but even so, Epysode's solidity, cohesion and ability to drag the listener into a world of shadows and madness that is completely exhilarating, is in a championship of its very own.

There are some moments when you have nothing more to do then to bend into the most submissive vow to the album's musical quality. Take a look at the magnificent beginning of "Once Chance" and the imense visceral confrontation between Carpenter, Stensland and Luyten. This just isn't possible, it's not conceivable that an album can have not one, but a hand full of songs this overwhelming.

Overwhelming and merciless, "Obsessions" is undoubtedly the most brilliant musical piece available this year to the fans of dark and sinister Progressive Metal.

I'm yielded, and most unquestionably conquered by this titanic example of musical genius.
