Agincourt - "Angels Of Mons"

Os Agincourt são de facto um caso interessante. Formaram-se em 1991, acabaram em 1997 e voltaram a juntar-se em 2008. "Angels Of Mons" foi lançado já em Março de 2011 e seria de esperar que uma banda que não consegue lançar um álbum em 20 anos de existência não pode ser muito boa.

Nada poderia estar mais longe da verdade. É preciso ver que surgir em 1991, quando a indústria retirava o apoio à galinha dos ovos de ouro do Heavy Metal, era receita fácil para não se ir a lado algum, independentemente do talento.

Dissequemos então esta estreia dos Britânicos Agincourt.

Que surpresa! Se bem que Oz e Exxplorer estão frescos na minha mente como bandas regressadas dos mortos, "Angels Of Mons" parece-me inquestionavelmente o melhor dos três álbuns. Numa toada de Heavy Tradicional, tem a mesma aura melódica e inebriante de "Another Night", irrepreensível álbum dos High Spirits. Percebem onde quero chegar?

Todos os temas em "Angels Of Mons" são reminiscents dos anos 70/80, dos primórdios da NWOBHM, e pontuados por linhas vocais muito melódicas e da mais alta categoria que Richard E. Toy domina na perfeição. A interligação entre os membros da banda é soberba, e é claro que estamos perante músicos consumados. Entre as grantes guitarradas, os solos, a bateria endiabrada e os refrães memoráveis, temos aqui tudo o que precisamos para um grande álbum, com a excepção de algumas vocalizações de apoio. Estas são raras e parece-me que em alguns instantes teriam tornado excepcional o que já é excelente.

É impossível encontrar um mau tema neste álbum de NWOBHM com muito Hard Rock à mistura que se entranha e nos conquista muito rapidamente. Do início com "Edge Of Paradise" ao fim com "Agincourt", "Angels Of Mons" é um álbum viciante e apaixonante para todos os fãs de Metal dos anos 80 que em vez de tentar levar tudo ao topo, aposta em elegância e polidez. Compará-lo à obra prima de High Spirits é dizer muito, mas é dizer o merecido.

Agincourt - "Angels Of Mons"

Agincourt are quite an interesting case. They were formed in 1991, decided to split-up in 1997, and came back in 2008. "Angels Of Mons" was released back in March 2011 and I would expect a band who can't release a single album in 20 years to be somewhat lacking.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. One should realize that coming up in 1991, when the industry was pulling the carpet from underneath Heavy Metal, was a quick path to nowhere, regardless of your talent.

Let's then dissect this debut by UK's Agincourt.

What a surprise! If Oz and Exxplorer are fresh in my mind as bands returning from the dead, "Angels Of Mons" feels like the best album of the three. Delivering Traditional Heavy Metal, it has the same melodic aura and intoxicating of "Another Night", the flawless album by High Spirits. Do you see where I'm getting at?

Every song in "Angels Of Mons" are throwbacks of the 70's and 80's roots of the NWOBHM, and highlighted by very melodic vocal lines of the highest quality that Richard E. Toy dominates. The interplaying between the band members is superb, and it's clear we're in the presence of experienced musicians. Between the great guitar playing, the soloing, the wild drumming and the memorable choruses, we have all we need to make for a great album, with the exception of stronger background vocals. These are rare and I feel sometimes they could have made wonders to already great songs.

It's impossible to find a bad song in this album of NWOBHM with a lot of Hard Rock thrown in and that really hits you deep inside and conquers you very quickly. From the beginning with "Edge Of Paradise" to the end with "Agincourt", "Angels Of Mons" is an addictive and passionate album for all fans of 80's Heavy Metal, the kind that instead of going over the top, tries and succeeds in being elegant and polished. To compare it to High Spirits' masterpiece is saying a lot, but it's well deserved.
