Bloodbound - Unholy Cross

Ouvir "Unholy Cross", novo trabalho dos Bloodbound, faz-me sentir estranho. A banda que começou a carreira com um excelente álbum de Power Metal, "Nosferatu", andou desde então meio estranha, e tendo eu próprio gostado da direcção mais progressiva de "Tabula Rasa", sinto-me francamente surpreendido pela abordagem bem mais tradicional e directa de "Unholy Cross".

Surpreendido e conquistado.

Desde logo, com "Moria", o álbum mostra uma veia melódica impressionante, com coros épicos memoráveis que convidam ao headbang e ao acompanhamento da voz. "Drop The Bomb" segue-se e é simplesmente fenomenal, com um certo ar a Hammerfall. Aquele refrão é simplesmente demolidor. Pela altura que chegamos a "The Ones We Left Behind", contamos já com tudo mas ainda assim não estamos preparados para a toada épica deste grande hino, de velocidade ponderada e riffs assertivos que lhe conferem um ar de grandor.

São assim de rajada três lições de punho erguido, três temas muito bem compostos e estruturados aos quais não falta o devido clímax. Os temas que se seguem, "Reflections Of Evil", "In For The Kill", até ao fim, com a mais sombria "Unholy Cross", passando pela balada "Brothers Of War", e pela hiper melódica "The Dark Side Of Life", mostram sempre uma banda capaz de compor temas memoráveis, com alguma variação de passo para não se prenderem no cliché da velocidade, criando sempre uma grande mistura de Power com Metal Melódico. Não haverá simplesmente um único tema que não fique na cabeça em todo este álbum onde os Bloodbound nos dão um pontapé nos tomates e nos dizem que tocam o que muito bem lhes apetecer.

Atrás do microfone, Patrik Johansson (Dawn Of Silence) serve na perfeição este regresso da banda ao passado, com um timbre mais aberto que Urban Breed e uma enorme capacidade melódica, algo rouco também. Lembra frequentemente Tobias Sammet e, ouvindo "Unholy Cross", dá-me a sensação que o Power Metal não tinha coros assim tão viciantes desde "Vain Glory Opera" ou os primeiros Avantasia. Edguy ou Gamma Ray são de facto algumas das influências de nota neste álbum que não é inovador, mas sólido como aço, muito bem composto, ainda melhor interpretado e completamente viciante.

Se são daqueles que sentiam saudades da banda de "Nosferatu", "Unholy Cross" é com toda a certeza álbum para vocês. Para todos os fãs de Power Metal, "Unholy Cross" é o melhor álbum do género que ouvi este ano, e uma aquisição incontornável. Como vão conseguir superar isto, não sei, mas o mais certo é conseguirem-no.

Bloodbound - Unholy Cross

Listening to "Unholy Cross", Bloodbound's new work, makes me feel awkward. The band that debuted with a splendid Power Metal album, "Nosferatu", has been somewhat strange ever since, and since I enjoyed their prog approach in "Tabula Rasa", I'm stunned with their more traditional and straight forward approach in"Unholy Cross".

Stunned and conquered.

From the very start, with "Moria", the album shows an impressive melodic vein, with memorable and epic choirs that invite to immediate headbang and sing alongs. "Drop The Bomb" follows and it's simply phenomenal, with a certain hint of Hammerfall. That chorus is simply overwhelming. By the time we reach "The Ones We Left Behind", we're ready for anything, but not to the epic tone of this great anthem, with moderate speed and assertive riffing to give it a certain grandeur.

And that's how you get three lessons on how to rise your fist, three songs very well composed and structured, each with a mandatory climax. The tunes that follow, "Reflections Of Evil", "In For The Kill", and all the way to the end, with the darker "Unholy Cross", including the ballad "Brothers Of War", or the hyper melodic "The Dark Side Of Life", always show a band capable of composing memorable songs, with enough variation so they won't fall into the dark pit of the speed cliché, creating a perfect mix of Power and Melodic Metal. There simply won't be a single song that won't stick to your head right away in this whole album where Bloodbound kick you in the balls and say they can play whatever they damn well want to.

Behind the microphone, Patrik Johansson (Dawn Of Silence) suits to perfection the band's return to the past, with a tone higher than Urban Breed's and enormous melodic potential, a bit gritty too. He reminds me somewhat of Tobias Sammet and, listening to "Unholy Cross", I get the feeling that Power Metal didn't have this kind of infectious choruses since "Vain Glory Opera" or the first Avantasia. Edguy or Gamma Ray are indeed some of the notable influences in this album that isn't particularly innovative, but solid as steel, very well composed, better performed and completely addictive.

If you're one of those who missed the band from "Nosferatu", "Unholy Cross" is undoubtedly the album you want. For all other Power Metal fans, "Unholy Cross" is the best album in the genre I've heard this year so far, and a mandatory acquisition. How they can top this, I don't know, but I'm almost certain they will.
