Brainstorm - "On The Spur Of The Moment"

Dois anos atrás, "Memorial Roots" sucedeu a um álbum de que gostei particularmente, "Downburst", de 2008 e com "On The Spur Of The Moment", só há uma pergunta a fazer: a banda mantém a consistência?

Surpreendentemente sim! Os Brainstorm parecem ser uma dessas poucas bandas que conseguem manter um alto nível, álbum após álbum, sem muita "evolução", mas igualmente sem estagnarem. O álbum contém precisamente aquilo que parece faltar a muitas bandas de estilo muito próprio: os elementos de sempre sem a sensação de que já ouvimos tudo anteriormente. De volta estão as composições elaboradas que transcendem o Power Metal mais directo, e a técnica vocal muito característica de Andy B. Franck (Symphorce). Os coros são, mais uma vez, um ponto alto do álbum, mas não faltam os riffs fortíssimos com elementos marcadamente progressivos que considero já uma característica dos Germânicos.

Também como os seus predecessores, "On The Spur Of The Moment" começa com um tema que se inicia calmamente, antes de se lançar num festival de riffs que acompanham na perfeição a toada de Franck, ora agressiva, ora melódica. Energético e sempre inteligente, o álbum prossegue com os coros pomposos de "In The Blink Of An Eye" e a agressão metódica de "Temple Of Stone", mas é "In These Walls" que os Brainstorm e Franck mostram a plenitude da sua majestade. Nesta balada emocionalmente tensa e acutilante, de um desespero quase claustrofóbico, as linhas vocais são sublimes sobre o apoio do piano, gerando um tema colossal povoado de arranjos inteligentes e elaborados sem precisar cair no exagero. Fantástico.

Este álbum não vos vai entrar na cabeça à primeira. Precisam ouvi-lo, precisam estar atentos, e se o fizerem vão realmente ouvir todas aquelas nuances que dão aos Brainstorm um som bastante específico, com diversas camadas e que jamais se deixa apanhar em estruturas simples e lineares, ainda que eu não tenha nada contra elas. São estas tonalidades de fundo que por vezes mantêm um pouco mais em segredo o grau de elaboração das composições de Franck enquanto fazem inegavelmente parte do seu arrojo e configuram temas muito "cheios" e profundos.

Obviamente que não há aqui surpresas. Nem sei se isso seria bom ou não, tendo em conta o material aqui presente. Considerado que "surpresas" nunca garantiram valor acrescentado, e neste estado de coisas, olhando para o material oferecido, os fãs dos Brainstorm sabem pelo menos uma coisa: a banda não desilude e "On The Spur Of The Moment" solidificará ainda mais esse nível de confiança.

Brainstorm - "On The Spur Of The Moment"

Two years ago, "Memorial Roots" succeeded to an album I quite enjoyed, 2008's "Downburst", and with "On The Spur Of The Moment", there's only one question to be asked: does the band maintain its consistency?

Surprisingly yes! Brainstorm are one of the few bands that can maintain a high level, album after album, without much "evolution", all the while without going stale. The album contains precisely that which many bands lack when they have a very specific sound: their usual elements without the feeling we have listened to them many times before. Returning, we have the elaborate songs that transcend the more straightforward Power Metal, and the very recognizable vocal technique of Andy B. Franck (Symphorce). The choruses are, once again, a high point in the album, but you won't be left without powerful riffing with the Prog elements I would consider a strong characteristic of these Germans.

Much like its predecessors, "On The Spur Of The Moment" starts out with a song that opens quietly, before it unleashes a storm of riffing that goes hand in hand with Franck's singing, sometimes aggressive, sometimes melodic. Energetic and always intelligent, the album proceeds with the pompous choruses of "In The Blink Of An Eye" and the methodic aggression of "Temple Of Stone", but it's with "In These Walls" that Brainstorm and Franck show their full majesty. This tense and soaring ballad with an almost crushing despair features sublime vocal lines over a piano, generating a colossal and elaborate song with smart arrangements without going overboard. Fantastic.

This is one album that won't stick to your mind at first. You will need to listen to it, to pay attention, and if you do, you'll really be rewarded with all the nuances Brainstorm always have and which give them a very specific sound, with several layers that never get caught up in linear structures, not that I have anything against those. These background marvels are what usually keeps a secret of just how elaborate Franck's songs are, while they are also part of their boldness and make for very full and profound songs.

Obviously you won't find any surprises here. I'm not even sure if that's good or bad, taking into consideration the stuff here present. I think surprises don't equal to added value, and in this state of things, listening to the songs the album delivers, fans of Brainstorm know at least one thing: the band just doesn't let them down and "On The Spur Of The Moment" will only solidify that relationship of trust.
