Chris Ousey - "Rhyme & Reason"

Há algum tempo que as páginas da RHL não dão destaque ao Hard Rock/AOR, algo que vai mudar com a oportunidade de avaliar "Rhyme & Reason", primeiro trabalho a solo de Chris Ousey, senhor que poderemos conhecer de Heartland, mas também de Virginia Wolf, ao lado de Jason Bonham. Quem lhe conhece o trabalho sabe desde logo que Chris tem uma voz que é um portento: além de um timbre morno, é tecnicamente fabuloso, facilmente capaz de estar ao lado de lendas como Glenn Hughes.

Não só, mas o álbum conta ainda com nomes do mais alto nível no panorama do Hard Rock, desde Tommy Denander (Alice Cooper) e Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Gary Moore), além de Mike Slamer (City Boys, Seventh Key) e Gregg Bisonette (Dave Lee Roth, Ringo Starr). Ou seja, o pedigree está garantido.

Em "Rhyme & Reason", Ousey & Cia. oferecem um álbum delicioso que deixará os amantes de AOR e Hard Rock Melódico de joelhos, com Ousey a tratar das letras e Denander a compor as músicas. Uma equipa fabulosa. Desde o rock energético de "The Mother Of Invention" e "Bleeding Heart", o álbum promete alguns momentos excelentes de música. O primeiro dos temas é francamente precioso, com uma estrutura bem pensada e os primeiros momentos de puro deleite graças ao poder vocal de Ousey.

Mais à frente, "To Break A Heart" é um tema grandioso com os seus coros muito soul, mas o álbum também tem tempos mais calmos como com "The Reason Why" e em particular com a única real balada aqui presente, "A Natural Law". Este é o tipo de tema que nos leva a pensar que já não se produzem baladas desta envergadura (quando obviamente... se produzem); começando calma, acaba por ganhar em poder para gerar um refrão inacreditavelmente bom e cheio de alma.

É muito fácil ver onde alguns poderão considerar este álbum pouco arriscado ou banal, mas até os diamantes são iguais a milhares de outros. No entanto não há um único mau tema aqui presente e com cada audição, conseguem facilmente encontrar um tema favorito novo, o que poderá ser a grande virtude, mas também defeito de "Rhyme & Reason", já que de certo modo as músicas não divergem muito entre si. Apesar desta pequena reserva, "Rhyme & Reason" é um convincente e expansivo álbum de Hard Rock com laivos de AOR que conquista definitivamente.

Chris Ousey - "Rhyme & Reason"

It's been a while since RHL last featured some Hard Rock/AOR, something about to change thanks to the chance of reviewing "Rhyme & Reason", the first solo release by Chris Ousey, a gentleman we may know from Heartland, but also from Virginia Wolf, side by side with Jason Bonham. Those who know his work will know Chris is a master with a tremendous voice: besides his warm tone, he's technically fabulous, quite capable of competing with legends like Glenn Hughes.

Not only, but the album also sees the performances of some shining stars in the Hard Rock world, like Tommy Denander (Alice Cooper) and Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Gary Moore), plus Mike Slamer (City Boys, Seventh Key) and Gregg Bisonette (Dave Lee Roth, Ringo Starr). In short, it's one hell of a pedigree.

In "Rhyme & Reason", Ousey & Co. deliver a delightful album that will leave fans of AOR and Melodic Hard Rock on their knees, with Ousey handling the lyrics and Denander writing the songs. A fabulous team. From the energetic rock of "The Mother Of Invention" and "Bleeding Heart", the album promises some excellent moments of music. The first of the songs is indeed precious, with a very smart structure and the first cases of sheer delight by Ousey's vocals.

Further ahead, "To Break A Heart" is a grand song with its soul choirs, but the album also has quieter moments like "The Reason Why" and particularly the only real ballad present, "A Natural Law". This is the kind of song that makes you think they don't write ballads like this anymore (when it's clear that... they do); starting out calm, it gains in power until generating an incredibly good and soulful chorus.

It's very easy to see where this album could be taken for safe or pretty standard, but even a diamond is like many others. And there's not a single bad song here. With each new listen, you'll probably find a new favourite song, which is the greatest virtue, but also the greatest fault of "Rhyme & Reason", because in a way, songs tend to follow the same basic structures and are not very different from one another. Even with this issue, "Rhyme & Reason" is a convincing and expansive Hard Rock album with hints of AOR that definitely conquers you.
