Intense - "The Shape Of Rage"

Os Britânicos Intense têm uma carreira que remonta já ao início dos anos 90, mas só com o seu álbum de 2007, "As Our Army Grows" é que tomei contacto com eles. Por então achei-os interessantes, mas do que consigo lembrar-me, nada perto do excelente que nos oferecem neste seu terceiro álbum, "The Shape Of Rage"!

A banda apresenta-nos um Power Metal reconhecidamente Europeu com laivos de Iron Maiden, bem reconhecíveis nas guitarras harmonizadas, e na base de algumas leads excelentes. Mas a esta herança acrescentam-se riffs bastante intensos e pesados que aqui configuram realmente um impiedoso ataque de cordas que não perde de vista a melodia. Ainda assim, um modo justo de lhes classificar a sonoridade é pensar num cruzamento entre Heavy clássico e Speed Metal com Metal Melódico.

Francamente energético, o álbum começa com uma galopante "Anubis", tema que torna bastante óbvia toda a integração de influências que fazem os Intense e mostra todos os seus melhores elementos, dos solos fulminantes, às guitarras elaboradas e interessantes, além das vocalizações empenhadas que por vezes me lembram uma das minhas bandas favoritas, Vanishing Point. A toada continua por mais dois temas, o empolgado "The Elemental" e "One Man's Word", após o que a balada "For The Fallen" fornece um certo descanso e dá-nos uma ideia das peculiaridades do vocalista Sam Hetherington, que apesar de ter porventura algumas limitações, é na verdade muito polivalente e entrega uma prestação bastante diversificada.

Tudo volta a temas mais intensos e pesados com "Save Me From Myself" onde me agrada particularmente o riff, mas a velocidade é mais baixa nesta segunda parte do álbum. O foco parece ser num ritmo mais sustentável e seguro, com riffs muito apelativos e devo dizer que por esta altura já estou rendido à afinação das guitarras e à produção, algo crua, suja até, mas bastante nítida. Tema marcante desta nova direcção do álbum é a épica "Skull Of Sidon II (The Final Stand)", que com os seus 8 minutos de duração mantém o interesse quando começa algo ponderada até explodir num flash de velocidade e bateria ribombante. Instrumentalmente, os Intense são bastante sólidos, elaborados e por vezes intrincados, o que se nota bem neste tema valioso.

Os dois últimos temas são "The Shape Of Rage" e "Lie (Alternate Ending)". Se "Skull Of Sidon II (The Final Stand)" surpreende pela sua ambição, "The Shape Of Rage" surpreende pelo peso. São dois minutos de solos e riffs afiados como diamantes antes de ouvirmos as primeiras teclas e vocalizações, garantindo adrenalina desde o início. Ao mesmo tempo, é talvez o tema com sonoridade mais moderna e menos Maidenesca. Relativamente a "Lie", este é um tema particularmente interessante do ponto de vista instrumental e com linhas vocais melódicas. As duas versões terminam de facto de modo diferente, ambas de modo mais lento, mas uma com instrumentais completos e um riff de novo acelerado no final, enquanto a segunda versão termina com um canto acompanhado a piano e parece-me a versão que mais gosto.

Com o seu terceiro álbum, os Intense conseguem algo realmente digno de nota. Dois temas demolidores logo no início, outros tantos no seu final, com um alinhamento bastante bom pelo meio, mostram uma banda focada, empenhada e com talento, a tocar algo que realmente lhes dá gozo. Talvez nestes últimos 7 anos de estabilidade nas suas fileiras se reflicta já em pleno na sua maturidade como banda. As influências de Maiden são muito bem aproveitadas e adaptadas ao som dos Ingleses e o resultado final é excelente, um álbum que fará as delícias de todos os fãs de metal melódico tocado com vigor.

Intense - "The Shape Of Rage"

British Intense have a career that goes back to the early 90's, but only with their 2007 album. "As Our Army Grows", is that I came into contact with them. At the time I found them interesting, but from what I can remember, nothing close to the excellence they offer us with their 3rd album, "The Shape Of Rage"!

The band delivers a very European brand of Power Metal with hints of Iron Maiden very noticeable in the twin guitar play and as the origin of some great leads. But to this heritage they add pretty intense and heavy riffing that mount a relentless chord attack without losing sight of melody. Even so, a fair way of classifying their sound is to think of a crossing between Classic Heavy and Speed Metal with Melodic Metal.

Frankly energetic, the album starts out with a galloping "Anubis", a song that showcases the whole integration of influences that Intense operate and its best element, from the lightning soloing, to the elaborate and interesting guitar playing, plus the heartfelt vocals that sometimes remind me of Vanishing Point. This shape of things goes on for two more songs, "The Elemental" and "One Man's Word", after which the ballad "For The Fallen" gives you some time to rest and an idea of the peculiarities of singer Sam Hetherington, who although he might have some limitations, is in fact a very skillful singer and delivers a very diversified performance.

Things go back to more intense songs with "Save Me From Myself" where I particularly enjoy the riff, but the speed is lower in this second part of the album. The focus appears to be in a more sustainable and solid rhythm, with appealing riffing, and I must say that by this point of the album I'm already sold to the guitar tuning and the production slightly raw, gritty even, but very clear. A great song in this new direction of the album is the epic"Skull Of Sidon II (The Final Stand)", which, clocking at 8 minutes, maintains our interest when it starts out quite moderately until it explodes in a burst of speed and thunderous drumming. Instrumentally, Intense are very solid, elaborate and even intricate, and that shows very well in this valuable song.

The last two songs are "The Shape Of Rage" and "Lie (Alternate Ending)". If "Skull Of Sidon II (The Final Stand)" surprises for its ambition, "The Shape Of Rage" surprises for its heaviness. It's two minutes of diamond sharp riffing and soloing even before you listen to the first keyboards and vocals, ensuring adrenaline from the start. At the same time, it's perhaps the most modern sounding and less Maidenesque song here. Concerning "Lie", this is a particularly interesting tune from the instrumental standpoint, plus very melodic vocal lines. Both versions end indeed differently, somewhat slower than the rest of the song, but while one has a full instrumental, the other wraps it up with a piano accompanied chant and I think I like this alternative version the most.

With their third album, Intense pull off something really worthy of note. Two crushing songs right at the beginning, another two at the end, with a very strong set in between, show a very focused, committed and talented band playing what they really enjoy. Maybe these past 7 years of stability are now fully reflected in their maturity as a band. The Maiden influences are very well used and adapted to the sound of the British, providing an excellent final result, an album that will be a delight to all the fans of Melodic Metal played with vigor.
