Leaves' Eyes - Meredead

Tempo, tempo, há sempre falta de tempo, e quando escrevi a crítica a Midnattsol não quis de modo algum colocá-la ao lado de Leaves' Eyes para evitar comparações. Entretanto a minha disponibilidade quase desapareceu e "Meredead" transformou-se naquilo em que se transformam os bons álbuns: algo para ouvir, não para avaliar.

Os Leaves' Eyes não serão uma banda extraordinária, mas têm uma solidez admirável e têm vindo a melhorar-se, com "Meredead" a parecer uma clara continuidade na discografia da banda, mas ao mesmo tempo criando um lugar muito próprio. Como resultado final acaba por se destacar dos seus antecessores, por um lado por uma maior maturidade, por outro pela maior presença de elementos folk.

Os temas em Norueguês "Krakevisa", "Mine Taror er ei Grimme" e "Nystev" são exemplo disto e encontram-se entre o melhor que Meredead tem a oferecer, com Liv Kristine a usar a plenitude das suas técnicas de canto mais tradicionais. No lado mais Sinfónico, os arranjos são poderosos e energéticos, com grandor. Veja-se o exemplo da excelente "Spirit's Masquerade" e a agressiva "Sigrlinn". Mas há também uma vertente de rock neste álbum, muito visível em "Velvet Heart".

Palavra final para a cover de "To France", de Mike Oldfield. Não posso dizer que adore quando as bandas fazem de uma cover o seu primeiro videoclip ou lhe dão grande destaque, mas devo admitir que os Leaves' Eyes lhe fazem devida justiça e Liv Kristine encaixa perfeitamente no ambiente da música. O suficiente para honrar Maggie Reilly.

Tudo somado, tenho de considerar este o melhor álbum dos Leave's Eyes, um que lhes marca a maturidade e tem todos os elementos para os tornar uma referência no metal sinfónico. Doravante, superar Meredead representará sem dúvida um desafio, mas quer-me parecer que os Leaves' Eyes têm melhorado a cada novo álbum, e não vão parar agora.

Leaves' Eyes - Meredead

Time, time, time is always short, and when I wrote the review for Midnattsol I really didn't want to place it side by side with Leaves' Eyes to avoid comparisons. In the meantime, my availability vanished and "Meredead" became what all good albums turn into: one to be listened, not reviewed.

They may not be an extraordinary band, but they have a remarkable solidity and have been constantly improving upon themselves, with "Meredead" feeling like a clear continuity, all the while having its very own spot in Leaves' Eyes discography. As a final result, it stands out for its greater maturity on one hand, and for the greater presence of folk elements on the other.

Songs sung in Norwegian, like "Krakevisa", "Mine Taror er ei Grimme" and "Nystev" are clear examples of this, and provide some of the best moments "Meredead" has to offer, with Liv Kristine using the full spectrum of her more traditional singing techniques. On the more symphonic side, the arrangements are powerful and energetic, even grandeur even. Take a look at the excellent "Spirit's Masquerade" and the aggressive "Sigrlinn". And there's also a rock aspect to this album, with songs such as "Velvet Heart".

A final word to the cover of Mike Oldfield's "To France". I can't say I like when bands give such importance to a cover song, but I'll admit Leaves' Eyes really do it justice and Liv Kristine fits in here perfectly. Perfectly enough to honor Maggie Reilly.

All things accounted for, I must consider this the best Leaves' Eyes album so far. One to mark their maturity and has everything to turn them into a landmark of symphonic metal. Henceforth, overcoming "Meredead" will be a challenge, but I feel Leaves' Eyes have been improving with each new album and they're just not about to stop now.
