Midnattsol - The Metamorphosis Melody

Chega às lojas no próximo dia 22 o novo trabalho dos Alemães Midnattsol, "The Metamorphosis Melody", e ouvindo o que estou a ouvir neste momento, tenho de dar o braço a torcer.

No já distante ano de 2008, "Nordlys" (Review) não me convenceu por aí além, mas com "The Metamorphosis Melody" a banda parece ter conseguido acertar a sua fórmula de Metal Gótico com influências folk, algo bem aparente desde o início com o galopante tema que dá título ao álbum. A vertente folk é bem aparente nos riffs, e nota-se algum cuidado na composição desse tema e dos restantes com excelentes arranjos e ritmos variados que mantêm as músicas interessantes. Esta banda começa finalmente a consolidar o seu talento e a técnica presente em "The Metamorphosis Melody" é aparente, com fortes incursões ao progressivo e influências bem externas ao metal nas passagens mais calmas das músicas.

Carmen tem aqui provavelmente a sua melhor performance. O teu timbre algo nasal e contido é uma questão de gosto, mas longe das tentativas líricas de "Nordlys", apresenta-se muito mais dinâmica e sólida, acompanhando muito melhor a variedade instrumental. O certo desarticular entre vocalista e músicos que senti em "Nordlys" está sanado do melhor modo possível.

"A Poet's Prayer" ou "Kong Volemons Kamp" são sublimes exemplos de quanta variedade os Midnattsol conseguem imprimir a uma música sem perderem o norte ou o interesse, enquanto "Forlorn" encontra Carmen a seguir muito competentemente a banda nas suas cavalgadas mais rápidas. Já "Goodbye", um tema acústico onde são gritantes as influências das baladas medievais, coloca Carmen a cantar o que canta melhor, com a sua entoação emotiva e doce, em pleno controle da sua técnica de canto. Segue-se a sombria "Forvandelingen" e então a rockeira "Motets Makt", um dos melhores temas do álbum, muito melódico e dinâmico. Delicioso.

Ouvido como um todo, "The Metamorphosis Melody" apresenta variedade e solidez sem perder a direcção e é um álbum profundamente convincente com qualidade instrumental apreciável, cheio de bons momentos para qualquer fã do género. Mesmo que tenham sentido reservas quanto à banda nos seus dois primeiros álbuns, é altura de as perderem e este é o álbum que devem ouvir para lhes dar uma segunda chance. É realmente bom.

Midnattsol - The Metamorphosis Melody

Reaching stores on April 22nd we have Midnattsol's new album, "The Metamorphosis Melody", and listening to it I really have to bite the bullet.

You see, back in 2008, I was less than impressed with "Nordlys" (Review), but with "The Metamorphosis Melody" I feel the band has fine tuned its formula of Folk tinged Gothic Metal, something quite apparent from the start with the galloping title track. The Folk side of their music is quite clear in the riff structure, and you can tell they took great care in the song's composition, as is the same with the ones that follow, with great arrangements and varied rhythms that keep songs interesting. So, the band really starts to solidify its skills and the technique present in "The Metamorphosis Melody" is noticeable, with strong incursions to the Progressive spectrum and other musical areas well detached from metal in the songs' calmer passages.

Carmen has here what is perhaps her best vocal performance yet. Her somewhat nasal and contained tone is a matter of taste, but far from her operatic attempts in "Nordly", the feels a lot more dynamic and solid, quite more capable of keeping up with the instrumental variety and pace. The sensation I had in "Nordlys" of musicians and singer not being quite flowing together is now completely gone.

"A Poet's Prayer" or "Kong Volemons Kamp" are great examples of how much variety Midnattsol pack in a single song without losing their heading or our interest, while "Forlorn" sees Carmen very competently keeping up with the band in its faster cavalcades. In "Goodbye", an acoustic song where there's a huge influence of medieval love songs, we see Carmen doing what she does best, with her emotional and sweet singing, in full control of her technique. We then have the darker "Forvandelingen" and then there's the rocking "Motets Makt", one of the best songs in the album, very melodic and dynamic. Delicious.

Listened as a whole, "The Metamorphosis Melody" presents us with variety and solidity, turning out as a very convincing album with impressive instrumental quality, filled with lots of good moments for fans of the genre. Even if you had reservations about the band with its previous two albums, this is the album you should check out to give them another chance. It's really good.
