My Black Light -"Human Maze"

Chegados de Itália, os My Black Light são uma das mais recentes apostas da Massacre Records, que assim lança internacionalmente a sua estreia de 2010, "Human Maze".

Os My Black Light, como o seu nome poderá indiciar, tocam Metal Gótico, mas em sua defesa não o tipo mais moderno e electrónico de que se vê bastante actualmente, nem o mainstream/alternativo, mas um que invocará talvez os primeiros álbuns de Within Temptation ou Orphanage, com vocalizações guturais competentes em contraponto com uma vocalista feminina doce, mas também forte. Claro que vindos de Itália, não se escapam às influências modernas e há uma sombra de Lacuna Coil que não me agrada muito.

Com algumas tentativas sinfónicas nas teclas e alguns elementos electrónicos apesar de tudo, a banda Italiana apresenta alguma variedade instrumental, parecendo por vezes ir ao lado do Metal Melódico e Power Metal. De um modo geral os temas são muito bem compostos e atraentes. Atrás do microfone, Monica Primo faz um trabalho muito competente e talentoso, mas ainda tem espaço por onde evoluir, por exemplo em termos de adaptação da voz mais às necessidades dos temas. Por outro lado, as já mencionada teclas parecem ter um papel muito predominante nos temas e parece-me que Rudy (também vocais de apoio) é um teclista muito talentoso.

Temas como "Being Human" e "Detriny" mostram realmente este talento e parecem-me belos temas, mas também revelam algumas arestas por limar. No outro extremo, a cover de "Unbreak My Heart" parece-me um tremendo erro. Não é realmente para a voz de Monica.

Tudo somado, os Italianos My Black Light deixam uma estreia cheia de bons apontamentos e com algum interesse para fãs de Metal Gótico, mas o caminho para se melhorarem ainda tem alguma extensão. Uma maior identidade, e maior adequação entre instrumentais e vocais são talvez os pontos que me parecem mais importantes.

Hailing from Italy, My Black Light are one of the most recent bets by Massacre Recods who is now releasing in the international market the band's 2010 debut, "Human Maze".

My Black Light, as their name might give out, play Gothic Metal, but in their defense, it's not the more modern and electronic kind you see plenty of nowadays, nor the mainstream/alternative (at least not all the time), but one that can go as far as reminding you of the first albums by Within Temptation or Orphanage, with competent harsh vocals in contrast with a softer but strong female singer. Of course that being from Italy, they are not fully immune to modern influences and there's a hint of Lacuna Coil I'm not very happy about.

With some symphonic attempts in the keyboards and some electronic elements in spite of everything, the Italians offer some instrumental variety, sometimes sounding almost like a regular Melodic Metal band, even a Power Metal one. Generally speaking, songs are well composed and attractive. Behind the microphone, Monica Primo does a very good job, but she still has room for improvement, per example in adapting herself better to the songs. On the other hand, the keyboards are an important aspect of the band's sound and I think Rudy (also backup vocals) is a very talented keyboardist.

Songs such as "Being Human" and "Detriny" show this talent and sound like great songs, but they also show the areas that still require some more polishing. In the other extreme of the musical spectrum, the cover of "Unbreak My Heart" is a tremendous error. It really wasn't made for Monica's voice.

All things accounted for, Italia's My Black Light deliver a promising debut and of interest for fans of Gothic Metal, but the path for improvement is long. A greater identity and a better adaptation between vocals and instrumentals, are the points I feel are the most important ones.
