E porquê?

Porque chegado nesta recta final do ano, "Ravenlord" representa tudo aquilo a que os Mystic Prophecy nos habituaram com a sua mescla de Power Metal agressiva e forte, com influências muito notórias de Thrash Metal, se bem que a melodia se encontre sempre presente. Neste sentido, a banda encontra-se claramente no lado mais sombrio do Power Metal de pormenores técnicos interessantes e uma capacidade de agressão que deixará satisfeitos os fãs do Metal mais pesado.

Um excelente exemplo desta combinação de elementos agressivos e melódicos encontra-se logo no início com "Ravenlord", tema compassado onde brilham as vocalizações de Liapakis, cujo tom áspero poderá invocar Tom Englund, dos Evergrey, ou Jonny Lindqvist, dos Nocturnal Rites, entre outros. Riffs cortantes e refrães infecciosos fazem deste um tema viciante.

Segue-se a poderosa "Die Now", dolorosa, visceral, onde se as afinações são afins do Power Metal, os ritmos são claramente Thrash. A toada muda de novo com "Eyes Of The Devil", tema sombrio mas não tão agressivo, com um cavalgar inconstante e técnico que culminam num refrão absolutamente inesperado, bastante melódico com nuances de Metal Melódico ao estilo de bandas com Nocturnal Rites ou Jorn. Um riff particularmente estranho marca o início de "Cross Of Lies" que nos apresenta um trabalho bem interessante na guitarra por parte de (o guitarrista).

Seguem-se mais excelentes temas de rajada, "Hollow", "Wings Of Destiny" e "Endless Fire", onde se mantêm os elementos mais tecnicistas e as linhas vocais emocionais, o mesmo valendo para "Damned Tonight" e "Reckoning Day". A banda tem ainda tempo para uma cover de "Miracle Man" de Ozzy e não está nada má. Na verdade, o tratamento instrumental elaborado e endiabrado que lhe é dado dão todo o sentido à cover. Excelente. Finalmente, "Back With The Storm" é o bonustrack que encerra o álbum.

As grandes virtudes de "Ravenlord" estão na classe com que os Mystic Prophecy dão vida aos seus temas. Com um alinhamento renovado, o guitarrista Constantine apresenta um trabalho incrível na guitarra, com muita variedade e ganchos de relevo, enquanto a secção rítmica soa vigorosa e técnica e Markus Pohl continua a debitar riffs densos. Depois cabe a Roberto Liapakis acertar tudo, e é notório o seu talento para a agressividade, mas também para a melodia vigorosa e intensa, o que resulta num álbum que não só é de alta qualidade, mas dá também gosto ouvir pelos pormenores de riqueza que contém.

Mystic Prophecy - "Ravenlord"

If Christmas brought you some money with which to buy some good music, or you need to acquire a late Christmas present, we at rockheavyloud.com are certain "Ravenlord", by Germany's Mystic Prophecy will be a top choice.

Why?

Because, arriving as the year draws to a close, "Ravenlord" presents pretty much everything Mystic Prophecy got us used to, with their mix of strong, aggressive, Power Metal with very notable Thrash Metal influences, even if there always a very strong sense of melody around. This means the band is clearly in the darker spectrum of technical Power Metal with a skill for aggression that will leave the fans of harder Metal very pleased.

An excellent example of this combination between aggressive and melodic elements can be found right at the start with "Ravenlord", a strong track where Liapakis' vocals shine, with his gritty tone that might recall Evergrey's Tom Englund, or Nocturnal Rites' Jonny Lindqvist, among others. Soaring riffing and infectious choruses make this one hell of an addictive song.

"Die Now", follows. Painful, visceral, where the sound is akin to Power Metal, but the rhythms are clearly Thrashy. Then "Eyes Of The Devil" sets a new tone: a somber song, but not quite as aggressive, with an inconstant and technical galloping that culminates in an unexpected chorus, very melodic with Melodic Metal tinting quite like something from Nocturnal Rites or Jorn. A particularly strange riff then marks the beginning of "Cross Of Lies", which delivers a very interesting guitar work.

Several excellent songs follow in quick succession, "Hollow", "Wings Of Destiny" and "Endless Fire", where you'll see the more technical element and the emotional vocal lines, the same that can be said about "Damned Tonight" and "Reckoning Day". The band even has time for a cover of Ozzy's "Miracle Man", and that one isn't bad at all. In fact, the elaborate instrumental treatment it gets makes the cover all the more meaningful. Excellent. Finally, "Back With The Storm" is the bonustrack that brings the album to a close.

The great virtues of "Ravenlord" reside in the class with which Mystic Prophecy bring their songs to life. With a renewed lineup, guitarist Constantine delivers an amazing performance with a lot of variety and impressive hooks, while the rhythm section feels vigorous and Markus Pohl unleashes some thick riffing. Then, it's up to Roberto Liapakis to top it all, and his talent for aggression, but also for strong melodies, is notorious, making this an album that not only has the highest quality, but is a pleasure to enjoy thanks to all the magnificent details an richness it contains.
