Nemesea - "The Quiet Resistance"

Houve tempos em que depositei nos Nemesea a mais alta das esperanças. "Mana" de 2004 era inacreditavelmente bom, fantástico, estelar. Com aquela colecção de hinos de metal sinfónico, a banda parecia capaz de demolir qualquer concorrência, de Within Temptation a Nightwish ou Epica.

Mas logo a seguir os Holandeses deram-me um choque tremendo quando a sua sonoridade mudou chocantemente para os lados de um rock alternativo mais mainstream e menos sinfónico, chegando a ponto de ser tão pop que "In Control" significou para mim que a banda deixou pura e simplesmente de interessar.

Agora chega-me às mãos o seu terceiro álbum, "The Quiet Resistance", e há uma série de coisas que me fazem tremer, mas outras tantas levam-me a dar o braço a torcer. A começar, quase me esquecia de quão talentosa é Manda Ophuys, quer cante Metal Gótico, ou o rock alternativo/Metal neste novo álbum onde o seu poder emocional é arrebatador.

OK, alguns pormenores electrónicos, o tipo de Metal moderno que por estes dias tocam os Italianos Lacuna Coil, e a mistura não parece grande coisa, mas Manda consegue debitar, uma e outra vez, refrães avassaladores, como no caso de "Caught In The Middle" ou "Afterlife", belo exemplo, já que é um tema simples, repetitivo, mas inebriante precisamente pela performance fabulosa de Manda. "Whenever" é outro tema fortíssimo onde as raízes da banda no Metal Gótico Sinfónico são ainda notórias, e penso que Nemesea e Within Temptation poderiam bem andar lado a lado em qualquer leitor, ou Lacuna Coil.

É a partir daí que o álbum começa a ganhar uma toada mais pop que não me agrada particularmente e deixa de lado a vertente mais pesada que até então me agradou, com temas mais lentos como "If You Could" ou "High Enough", se bem que esta última tem mais um forte refrão. Depois outros temas são francamente demasiado fora da minha área de interesse, "Say", com as vocalizações masculinas e o scratching... poupem-me. Ou "It's Over", já começo a pensar demasiado em Evanescence ou Paramore, o que para muitos pode ser sinal de alegria mas não para mim. No entanto, mais uma vez Manda debita algumas linhas fantásticas em "It's Over" e parece quase um crime tanto talento salvar uma peça destas.

Último destaque para a forte "Allein" com a sua semelhança a Rammstein, fruto da presença de Heli Reissenweber dos Stahlzeit, aparentemente uma banda de covers de Rammstein.

A minha pergunta é o que raio fazem estes tipos com tanto talento a tocar este tipo de música cheia de clichés. Acima de tudo, Manda Ophuys tem uma voz e um talento de tal magnitude que me parece demasiado incomparável a Hayley Williams (Paramore) ou Amy Lee (Evanescence), que me parece estupidamente boa demais para competir neste campeonato que a moda há-de levar. Por vezes tem uma capacidade vocal de meter medo à Skin. Verdade.

E daqui ressalva que metade deste álbum vai deixar os fãs de Metal escandalizados, mas a outra metade é realmente boa e graças a Manda Ophuys, que mesmo alguns dos temas mais indesejáveis se salvam. A banda é talentosa e por mais que desgoste deste caminho não posso deixar de louvar os atributos de "The Quiet Resistance". Este carácter esquizofrénico parece-me ser suficiente para merecer a aquisição por parte de muito bom Metaleiro.

Mas porra, rapazes (e rapariga), deixem-se disto. Obviamente este álbum tem tudo para fazer sucesso, mas é demasiado vulgar neste campeonato e os Nemesea são capazes de coisas bem mais originais.

There were times when I had the highest expectations about Nemesea. 2004's "Mana" was unbelievably good, fantastic, stellar. With that tremendous collection of Symphonic Metal anthems, the band felt like it could take out any competition, from Within Temptation to Nightwish or Epica.

But right after that they dealt me a tremendous blow when their sound shockingly switched to a more alternative or mainstream rock, a lot less symphonic, feeling so Pop that "In Control" meant for me that I couldn't care less about this band from then on.

But these things come with reviewing albums, I now have their 3rd album, "The Quiet Resistance", and that are a lot of things to make me shiver, but plenty others that make me eat my hat. To begin with, I had almost forgotten how talented is Manda Ophuys, regardless if she's singing Gothic Metal, or alternative rock/metal in this new album where her emotional might is amazing.

OK, some electronic detailing, the kind of modern Metal you'd expect from Lacuna Coil, and the mix doesn't sound like much, but Manda delivers killer choruses, one time after the other, as is the case with "Caught In The Middle" or "Afterlife", a perfect example, since it's a very simple, repetitive song, but intoxicating exactly because of Manda's fabulous performance. "Whenever" is another very strong song where the band's Gothic roots are notorious, and I think Nemesea and Within Temptation could go hand in hand in any stereo, or even Lacuna Coil.

But that's where the album starts to gain a poppier sound that I'm not quite pleased with and leaves behind the heavier first part, with slower songs like "If You Could" or "High Enough", even if the later has a very strong chorus. Then there are other songs that are really way off my interest spectrum, like "Say", with its male vocals and scratching... spare me. Or "It's Over", and I'm thinking too much about Evanescence or Paramore, what might be good for some but certainly not for me. Yet, once again Manda delivers some fantastic lines in "It's Over" and it almost feels like a crime to use so much talent in this song.

A last highlight should go to the strong "Allein" with her likeness with Rammstein, thanks to the presence of Heli Reissenweber from Stahlzeit, apparently a Rammstein cover band.

My question would be what the hell are this talented guys doing, playing this kind of cliché filled music! Above all, Manda Ophuys has such a vocal talent that she can't even be compared with Hayley Williams (Paramore) or Amy Lee (Evanescence), and she sounds far too good to compete in this championship that changing fashions will sweep away. Sometimes, her vocal performance will make Skin tremble in fear. Really.

And this means half of this album will leave metalheads in scandal, while the other half is really good thanks to Manda Ophuys, saving even some below average songs. The band has talent and the more that I hate their path, I can't help myself from praising the attributes of "The Quiet Resistance". This schizophrenic character of the album migh be just enough for some metalheads to disregard the crap and buy it for the better parts.

But hell, guys (and girl), quit this! This album obviously has everything to attain success, but it's too mundane in this championship and Nemesea can do things that are a lot more original!
