Oz - "Burning Leather"

A primeira coisa que vão notar quando "Burning Leather" explodir nas vossas aparelhagens, é a sonoridade profundamente 80's e NWOBHM da banda Finlandesa. São uma banda retro?

Surpreendentemente, não. Apesar da minha mais absoluta ignorância, os Oz vão já no 6º álbum, tendo-se lançado em 1982 com "Heavy Metal Heroes". Em defesa de todos aqueles que poderão sentir-se culpados por não conhecer uma banda desta veterania, "Roll The Dice", o seu último álbum, data já de 1991, ano pelo qual este vosso escriba era ainda novo demais para conhecer o Heavy Metal para lá dos clichés óbvios.

Então são 20 anos de espera por um novo álbum, e só podemos congratular-nos por uma banda voltar ao activo, desde que tenha algo a oferecer, e os Oz de facto têm-no. Cortesia da AFM Records, "Burning Leather" é um paciente criogénico ressuscitado para acordar fresco e cheio de vitalidade com uma mistura muito interessante da sua velha identidade e das novas tendências.

Ainda assim, de "Dominator", tema gigantesco com que o álbum abre, podemos dizer que é NWOBHM puro e duro, o mesmo valendo para "Search Lights", um rock n' roll endiabrado e intenso de guitarras fulminantes. Com vocais que lembram uma mistura estranha de Byford/Boltendahl, os Oz são apesar de tudo uma banda muito melódica que transpira a cabedal e ganga e não me lembro francamente da última vez que ouvi um álbum tão convidativo e bem disposto. Pensem nos tempos áureos de Pretty Maids ou Saxon.

Nem tudo em "Burning Leather" são temas novos. Alguns, como "Turn The Cross Upside Down", a já mencionada "Search Lights", "Turn The Cross Upside Down", ou "Gambler", entre outras, são re-gravações de álbuns anteriores da banda. Não é que me incomode porque até agora não os tinha ouvido e há que dizer que são excelentes montras deste rock mexido dos Oz e não detraem em nada de "Burning Leather".

Só posso dizer que se gostam de Heavy Metal clássico dentro da onda da NWOBHM, alguma laca à mistura, ritmos fortes e acelerados, precisam mesmo ouvir "Burning Leather".

Oz - "Burning Leather"

The first thing you'll notice when "Burning Leather" explodes in your speakers, is the deeply 80's and NWOBHM sound of the Fins. Are they a retro band?

Surprisingly, no. Even though I had no previous knowledge of them, Oz are now on their 6th album, having debuted in 1982 with "Heavy Metal Heroes". In the defense of those that might feel ignorant for not knowing about such a veteran band, "Roll The Dice", their previous album, goes back to 1991, a time when this humble scribe was far too young to know the world of Heavy Metal beyond the obvious cliches.

So this was a 20 year waiting for a new album, and we can only feel happy the band is back in action, because they do have something interesting on offer here. Courtesy of AFM Records, "Burning Leather" is a cryogenic patient brought back to life to wake up fresh and full of vitality with a very interesting mix of his old self and the new ways in Heavy Metal.

Even so, of "Dominator", a colossal song that opens the album up, we can say this is pure NWOBHM, the same going for "Search Lights", a wild rocker with intense and blistering guitars. Vocals that remind you a strange mix of Byford/Boltendahl, don't make Oz any less melodic that reeks of leather and denim, and I have a serious problem thinking of the last time I heard something so inviting and uplifting. Think about the golden days of Pretty Maids or Saxon.

Not everything on "Burning Leather" is a spring chicken. Some songs, such as "Turn The Cross Upside Down", the aforementioned "Search Lights", "Turn The Cross Upside Down", or "Gambler", among others, are re-recordings coming from the band's previous records. I'm not particularly bothered by this, since I had never heard these songs before and I'll admit they are great showcases of Oz's spunky rock and they don't detract from the general quality in "Burning Leather".

All I can say is that if you like classic Heavy Metal with a lot of NWOBHM, some hairspray in the mix, strong and speeding rhythms, you really need to listen to "Burning Leather".
