Power Quest - Blood Alliance

Sou um fã de Power Quest desde o primeiro álbum da banda, mas até eu tive de baixar um pouco a excitação com "Master Of Illusion" de 2008 (Review).

Três anos volvidos, a banda Britânica mudou quase por completo e o único resistente, o teclista e fundador Steve Williams encontra-se agora rodeado de um alinhamento que inclui cinco novos membros, incluindo Chitral "Chity" Somapala. No entanto, e apesar de todas as mudanças, a linha central da banda continua presente, mas, surpreendentemente "Blood Alliance" é um regresso estrondoso.

Por comparação ao seu predecessor, "Blood Alliance" é mais rápido, com guitarras mais fortes, e shredding frequente, a começar com a intro "Battle Stations". Doravante, o trabalho das guitarras é fulminante e arrebatador, sendo disso um bom exemplo "Rising Anew". Complementarmente, as teclas continuam muito presentes numa toada que tem uma grande componente de Arena Rock, como em "Better Days", reminiscente do Hard Rock da década de 80, e é patente o talento de Steve Williams para compor ganchos memoráveis.

Se o álbum não nos agarra de imediato, a verdade é que os coros rapidamente se tornam infecciosos e exigem repetidas audições. Chity integra-se muito bem com o seu timbre intermédio e se bem que não o considere um vocalista muito maleável, as vocalizações de apoio e a estrutura instrumental apoiam-no plenamente e oferecem-nos momentos impressionantes. É difícil discriminar temas favoritos, mas "Sacrifice" é uma excelente música de Hard Rock, enquanto a seguinte "Survive" é um hino de Power Metal à velocidade da luz com um refrão impossível de não ser acompanhado. Mais excelentes temas, são os finais "Crunching The Numbers", a intensa "Only In My Dreams" e ainda a surpreendentemente épica "Blood Alliance".

A maior virtude de "Blood Alliance", contudo, é como o álbum cresce em nós à medida que o vamos conhecendo melhor e extraindo daí o seu real valor, sem cansar ou empalidecer. Nada mau, para uma banda que chegou a ter morte anunciada, e que agora nos entrega um trabalho viciante que obrigará Steve Williams a compor um sucessor, porque os fãs vão ficar sedentos de mais.

Power Quest - Blood Alliance

I've been a Power Quest fan since the band's first album, but even I had to curb my excitement with 2008's "Master Of Illusion" (Review).

Three years gone by, the British band is practically brand new and the only man standing, founding member and keyboardist Steve Williams, is surrounded with 5 new musicians, including Chitral "Chity" Somapala. Still, and even with all the lineup changes, the band's main characteristics are present, and, surprisingly, "Blood Alliance" is a stunning come back.

By comparison with its predecessor, "Blood Alliance" is faster, with stronger guitars and frequent shredding, starting with the intro "Battle Stations". Henceforth, the guitar work is fierce and enticing, a good example of this being "Rising Anew". At the same time, keyboards are very present with an Arena Rock feeling to them, such as in "Better Days", a tune reminiscent of 80's Hard Rock, and Steve Williams talent for writing memorable hooks is quite apparent.

If the album doesn't grab you at once, truth is the choruses quickly become infectious and demand renewed listening. Chity fits in very well with his mid range and, even if I don't think he's a particularly versatile singer, the back up vocals and instrumental structure support him very well to offer us some impressive moments. It's hard discriminating favorite songs, but "Sacrifice" is a splendid Hard Rock song, while the following "Survive" is a lighting fast Power Metal anthem with a chorus line you just have to sing along to. More excellent tunes are the final "Crunching The Numbers", the intense "Only In My Dreams" and the surprisingly epic "Blood Alliance".

"Blood Alliance" greatest virtue, though, is that the album grows in you as you get to know it better and get to recognize its true potential, not getting boring or tiresome. Not bad for a band that almost called it quits a while back, and that now delivers an addictive album that will force Steve Williams to come up with a follow up, because fans will be thirsty for more.
