Seven Thorns - Return To The Past

Ah meu Deus, adoro Power Metal tocado assim!

É mega floreado, a transbordar de arpejos e influências neoclássicas, arrojado, constantemente numa onda de adrenalina, pedal duplo até não mais, mas é assim que eu gosto dele, cheio de energia e melodia, e com o seu álbum de estréia em editora os Seven Thorns dão-nos mesmo isso.

E um álbum tão forte em Power Metal clássico, ao estilo dos velhos Stratovarius, Edguy, Nocturnal Rites, Sonata Arctica, algo de Silent Force, "Return To The Past" é o nome mais adequado ao que estes Finlandeses estão a tentar fazer. Um Power Metal simples, com melodias hiper apelativas, infecciosas e memoráveis apesar da falta de inovação, é-nos oferecido aqui de bandeja e fica rapidamente no ouvido.

No microfone Erik "EZ" Blomkvist, também nos Dreamscape e Platitude, destaca-se enormemente, graças ao seu timbre algo atípico, longe dos agudos do género, mais profundo, e contudo bem capaz de abrir as goelas e lançar no ar gritos melódicos perfeitos, não fosse ele o talentoso vocalista que é. E apesar disto precisa ser mais puxado e aproveitado; ele consegue dar bem mais do que isto e acrescentar mais-valias enormes. Mas toda a banda mostra ser tecnicamente dominante, como deve ser aliás neste género impregnado de Bach e Paganini nos solos.

Bom, chamem-lhe típico, derivativo, mas "Return To The Past" é exactamente o que tenta ser, e para fãs do Power Metal Europeu, é um álbum com muito para nos dar.

Seven Thorns - Return To The Past

Oh God, I love Power Metal played this way, so much!

It's mega flowery, overflowing with arpeggios and neoclassic influences, bold, ridding a constant adrenaline wave, double bass pedal from here to ever after, but that's exactly how I like it, filled with energy and melody, and with their label debut, Seven Thorns deliver precisely that.

This is an album so strong in classic Power Metal, in the style of early Stratovarius, Edguy, Nocturnal Rites, Sonata Arctica, a bit of Silent Force, that "Return To The Past" is the most adequate name around to classify what these Danes are trying to do. A simple Power Metal, with hyper appealing melodies, infectious and memorable even with the lack of innovation, is handed to us on a platter and it sticks to your head.

Behind the mic, Erik "EZ" Blomkvist, also in Dreamscape and Platitude, stands out for sure, thanks to his atypical tone, far from the thin vocals of the genre, deeper, and yet quite capable of perfect melodic screams, being him the great singer he is. And even so, he needs to put more effort into it; he has a lot more to give. But the whole band is technically dominant, as it should be in this genre where Bach and Paganini transpire in the abundant soloing.

Well, call it typical, derivative, but "Return To The Past" is exactly what it set out to be, and for fans of European Power Metal, it's an album with a lot to give.
