Stream Of Passion - Darker Days

Marcela Bovio deve ser com toda a certeza uma das mais excepcionais e competentes desconhecidas no mundo do Metal. Raramente invocada em comparação com as grandes titãs do género, a verdade é que ouvir-lhe o trabalho é admirá-la a cada novo álbum, e isto incluíndo os Elfonía e as presenças nos álbums de Ayreon. De resto, não se pode esperar falta de talento de uma banda que se viu apoiada desde o início pelo mito vivo de Arjen Lucassen

Se em "Flame Within" a banda nos tinha oferecido temas intensos mas emocionais, "Darker Days" socorre-se de mais teclas e arranjos para ter uma sonoridade mais orquestral e energética, numa toada que frequentemente alterna momentos mais calmos das músicas com explosões grandiloquentes. Marcela está excelente em todas, mas é absolutamente magnífica em algumas das passagens mais minimalistas como nos momentos de acordeão de "Lost", um tema que lembra o pulsar de energia incontida. No lado oposto a toda esta força, "Nadie Lo Ve" é uma melancólica balada acompanhada exclusivamente de piano, para mostrar toda a poesia vocal de Marcela. Um tema belo, capaz de fazer fluir lágrimas.

"Our Cause", "The Scarlet Mark" ou "Reborn" são outros grandes temas de Metal Sinfónico, mas "Darker Days" é claramente um álbum com variedade e alguns toques de metal progressivo. Contudo, outros temas são menos memoráveis e os 13 temas não permitem evitar uma certa sensação de repetição. Vénia feita aos Holandeses, a "Darker Days" não faltam argumentos para ser um álbum de altíssima qualidade.

Marcela Bovio is certainly one of the most exceptional and competent underrated singers in Metal. She rarely gets noted among the titans of the genre, but the truth is that listening to her work is admiring her with each new album, and this includes Elfonía and her work with Ayreon. Indeed, we can't expect lack of talent from a band supported by the living myth of Arjen Lucassen.

If in "Flame Within" the band delivered intense and emotional songs, creating some of the most touching moments I can think of, in an album that really got to me, "Darker Days" features stronger keyboards and arrangements for a more orchestral and energetic sound, frequently alternating between calmer moments and eloquent sonic explosions. Marcela is great in both, but she's magnificent in some of the quieter passages, such as in the accordion featuring moments of "Lost", a song that feels like pulsating, uncontained energy. In the opposite side to all of this strength, "Nadie Lo Ve" is a melancholic ballad accompanied exclusively by the piano, to show the whole of Marcela's vocal poetry. A beautiful song, one to jerk some tears.

"Our Cause", "The Scarlet Mark" or "Reborn" are other great Symphonic Metal songs, but "Darker Days" is clearly a varied album with some progressive touches. Still, some songs are less memorable and with 13 tunes, the album doesn't truly escape the feeling that there is some repetition around. A bow to the Dutch, "Darker Days" has plenty of reasons why it's still an album of a very high quality.
