Tangent Plane - Project Elimi

Cá está o segundo álbum dos Germânicos Tangent Plane, três anos após a sua estreia de 2008, "Among Grey Masks", e claramente a banda tentou fazer algo especial neste álbum.

Infelizmente, o esforço parece ter sido pago com um preço elevado. Odeio não conseguir ouvir um álbum até ao fim, especialmente quando a banda é nova e promissora, mas "Project Elimi" encarna muito daquilo que pode haver de errado com o Metal Progressivo, nomeadamente o facto de se tentar tanto ser elaborado que o álbum acapa por parecer ter falta de direcção.

Para mim, o maior problema centra-se nas vocalizações de Jan Otto. O problema não é a sua competência ou a capacidade para cantar tudo; o problema é mesmo que ele realmente tenta cantar tudo e frequentemente é excessivamente dramático, com um vibrato exagerado. Por vezes o controlo parece mesmo estar a escapar-lhe e tudo isto prejudica a capacidade das músicas para nos ficarem na mente. Jan Otto não tem de provar nada a ninguém e um pouco mais de contenção não lhe faria mal.

Chegamos então à parte instrumental, que soa como pano de fundo para a preponderância de Otto, e embora haja talento claro a ser exibido, quando tudo se junta numa música, esta parece caótica e sem direcção. Com uma duração superior a uma hora, um tamanho médio por música de 9 minutos e uma a chegar aos 22 minutos, é crucial conseguir apanhar e manter a atenção do ouvinte e "Project Elimi" falhou esse alvo por completo. O resultado final é que, mesmo tendo ouvido o álbum por diversas vezes, não consigo destacar muito ou indicar um tema que tenha considerado memorável.

Não, isto não me agrada nada dizê-lo, mas os Tangent Plane precisam focar o seu talento musical de modo a fazerem um álbum em que não tenham de mostrar todas as suas habilidades de uma vez.

So here is the second album by Germany’s Tangent Plane, 3 years after their 2008 debut, "Among Grey Masks", and clearly this is an album where the band tried hard to make something special.

Alas for me, the effort seems to have paid a high cost. I hate not being able to listen to a whole album, especially when the band is young and promising, but "Project Elimi" incarnates most of what people will have against Progressive Metal, namely the fact that they try so hard to be elaborate that the album feels like it lacks direction.

For me, the greatest issue centers around the vocals of jan Otto. The problem isn't his competence, or his ability to sing everything; the problem is he really tries to sing everything and frequently gets excessively dramatic, with an exaggerated vibrato. Sometimes the control seems almost as if slipping away and all of this hurts the songs ability to stick to your memory. Jan Otto really doesn't have to prove himself to anyone and I think some contention would do him nice.

So we get to the instrumental part, and it sounds somewhat a background for Otto's dominance, and although we have great talent at display, with some amazing musicianship, when it all comes together, the song feels chaotic and directionless. Stretching for over and hour, with an average song length of 9 minutes and one clocking at an amazing 22 minutes, grabbing and keeping the listener's attention is crucial and I think "Project Elimi" really missed the mark on that one. The final result is that, even if I have listened to this album for several times, I can't really highlight much, or name a song I found memorable.

No, this doesn't please me at all to say, but Tangent Plane need to foccus their notorious talent into making an album where they don't try to showcase it all at once.
