ValSans - Sword

Bem, não imagino que existam por aí muitos leitores da RHL a conhecer os Austríacos ValSans, que nos chegam pela mão da Pure Underground Records com um Power Metal francamente tradicional, com ares de Manowar, até Hammerfall, algum Motörhead.

O orçamento é baixo, a banda não peca por grandiosidade, mas de algum modo, toda a crueza da sua atitude gerou um álbum muito divertido. De vez em quando fico com a sensação que as letras precisavam realmente de apontar mais alto em termos de pretensões artísticas, mas noutros momentos o que se quer é mesmo punhos no ar e nada de poesias.

É o caso de "Mjölnir" que começa o álbum com puro Power Metal de fazer a espinha vibrar. Nenhum álbum com uma música assim pode ser verdadeiramente mau. O espírito "True Metal" está omnipresente em "Sword", com hinos e cânticos guerreiros, francamente bem conseguidos, como é o caso de "On The Battlefield" onde o Metal Tradicional e visceral se alterna com passagens mais contemplativas, e os óbvios louvores ao Heavy Metal, com "Metal Crusade" e a grande "The Allegiance".

Na voz, Thomas Kleinander não é isento de limitações, mas relembra-me frequentemente Joachim Cans, sensação que se transfere para as próprias músicas, caso muito óbvio o de "The Allegiance". Claro que falamos de uns Hammerfall de há dez anos.

É quase certo que, pela sua atitude e genuinidade, "Sword" será um álbum para entreter bem qualquer fã de True Metal, mas a banda tem ainda muitas fraquezas, realmente na área das letras. Se os riffs e os solos são sólidos como betão, as letras não são apenas simplistas, por vezes parecem dificultar o trabalho de Kleinander, dando-lhe mais do que ele devia tentar digerir. Precisamente por isto, a banda não chega ao nível de qualidade de que parece ser capaz e "Sword" pode apresentar alguns momentos frustrantes.

Uma boa estreia, não obstante, mas uma que deixa reservas.

Valsans - Sword

I don't think many of our readers will know Austria's ValSans, who arrive courtesy of Pure Underground Records with a really traditional Power Metal, with hints of Manowar, Hammerfall and some Motörhead.

The budget is low, the band doesn't go overboard with grandeur, but somehow the sincerity of their attitude generates a very fun album. From time to time I get the feeling the lyrics really need something extra in terms os aspirations, but on other occasions what we really want is your fists in the air and no poetry.

Such is the case with "Mjölnir" that starts out the album with pure Power Metal to make your spine shiver. No album with a song like this one can be considered a really bad album. The True Metal spirit is all over "Sword", with hymns and warrior chants, like in "On The Battlefield", where Traditional Metal blends with calmer passages, plus the obvious praises of Heavy Metal itself in "Metal Crusade" and the great "The Allegiance".

In the vocal department, Thomas Kleinander isn't free of limitations, but frequently reminds me of Joachim Cans, a feeling that gets transferred to the songs themselves, as is the obvious case with "The Allegiance". Of course we're talking about 10 year old Hammerfall.

It's almost certain that, for its attitude and honesty, "Sword" will be an entertaining album for any true metal fan, but the band still has many weaknesses, mostly in the lyrics area. If the riffing and soloing are rock solid, lyrics are not only too simplistic, but they also seem to be making Kleinander's work more difficult, giving him more than what he should be trying to digest.

A good debut, regardless, but one to be listened with caution.
