Wizard - ...Of Wariwulfs And Bluotwarves

Com o mais estranho título da sua carreira, os Germânicos Wizard estão de regresso após o poderoso "Thor" de 2008 (Review), trazendo-nos mais uma soberba declaração de metal tradicional ao melhor estilo de Manowar, sem esquecer outros ícones do género, como os compatriotas Grave Digger.

Desta vez, contudo, a banda aventura-se pela temática do terror e lendas medievais sobre vampiros e lobisomens, território que os também compatriotas Powerwolf cobrem com grande aptidão, embora numa vertente mais humorística. Por comparação, os Wizard apresentam-nos um Metal Tradicional mais directo, poderoso e até feroz, numa toada mais séria que os vê colaborar com o autor André Wiesler para adaptar musicalmente a sua trilogia "Die Chroniken des Hagen von Stein".

Desde a inicial "...Of Wariwulfs and Bluotvarwes" que as influências de Manowar são gritantes, quer nos riffs, quer nas letras e na performance de Sven D'Ana, mas igualmente óbvio é a competência técnica da banda e o ambiente que o álbum nos dará com temas rápidos e riffs poderosos e solos desvairados, e linhas vocais muito melódicas.

Não podemos apontar a maior das originalidades aos Germânicos, mas com a polivalência e voz reconhecível de Sven e o trabalho instrumental da mais elevada qualidade, os Wizard conseguem estar no seu próprio campeonato apesar de todas as semelhanças óbvias com outras bandas. De facto, o trabalho da dupla Boland/Maass é fantástico, quer nos riffs mais directos, quer nos temas mais experimentais como "Fair Maiden Mine", e a secção rítmica não lhes fica atrás.

Dos temas mais impiedosos como "Undead Insanity" com os seus riffs de Halford, e "Hagr" ou "Wariwulf", passando pela ameaçadora "Hearteater", aos mais lentos, como o já mencionado "Fair Maiden Mine", "...Of Wariwulfs..." traz-nos os Wizard em topo de forma com um interessante álbum de True Metal que não falha naquilo que dele poderíamos legitimamente esperar: força, melodia, velocidade e muita atitude.

Se procuram punhos no ar e adrenalina, e ousam pensar que sabem o que é "true metal", "...Of Wariwulfs..." é definitivamente o álbum para vós.

Wizard - ...Of Wariwulfs And Bluotwarves

With what is perhaps the weirdest tittle in their career, Germany's Wizard are back after 2008's powerful "Thor" (Review), bringing us yet another superb declaration of traditional metal in the best style of Manowar, without forgetting other icons of the genre, like their own countrymen Grave Digger.

This time around, though, the band ventures through the landscapes of horror and medieval legends about vampires and werewolfs, a territory covered by their also countrymen Powerwolf, although in a more humorous fashion. In comparison, Wizard offer us a straightforward Traditional Metal, powerful, even fierce, with a more serious stance that sees them cooperating with the author André Wiesler to adapt into music form his trilogy "Die Chroniken des Hagen von Stein".

From the onset, with "...Of Wariwulfs and Bluotvarwes" the influences from Manowar are undeniable, be it in the riffing, the lyrics and Sven D'Ana's performance. Also quite obvious is the band's technical competence and the ambience the album will deliver, with fast songs and powerful riffing, wild soloing and very melodic vocal lines.

We really can't accuse the Germans of a lot of originality, but with Sven's recognizable vocals and versatile performance and an instrumental work of the highest quality, Wizard stand in their own championship even with all the obvious similarities with other bands. Indeed, the guitar work of Boland/Maass is fantastic, both in the more in-your-face riffing, and in the more experimental approaches, such as in "Fair Maiden Mine", and the rhythm section is also brilliant.

From the more vicious songs like "Undead Insanity" with its Halford riffing, and "Hagr" or "Wariwulf", not forgetting the brooding "Hearteater", to the slower ones, such as the aforementioned "Fair Maiden Mine", "...Of Wariwulfs..." presents us with Wizard at the peak of their strength, with a very interesting True Metal album that doesn't fail to deliver exactly what we expect of it: strength, melody, speed and lots of attitude.

If you're looking for raised fists and adrenaline, and you dare think you know what "true metal", then "...Of Wariwulfs..." is definitely the album for you.
