Huntress - "Spell Eater"

Oriundos da Califórnia, os Huntress estreiam-se com "Spell Eater" pela Napalm Records, o que é algo de louvável. Além disso parece ter havido um severo burburinho em torno desta aparentemente inovadora fórmula de ter uma mulheraça imponente atrás do microfone, como se o fã mediano de metal andasse recesso por marias jeitosas. Nestas situações, facilmente o tiro sai pela culatra e uma banda de talento facilmente acaba no ecoponto ao lado de todas as outras que se viram catalogadas como mais uma tentativa de atrair público com uma moçoila vistosa. Será então que as expectativas criadas são justificadas?

O single "Eight Of Swords" foi uma indicação muito forte do que nos reservaria "Spell Eater", um metal tradicional tipicamente Americano com agressão para dar e vender e Jill Janus a impressionar pela potência e ferocidade da sua voz. Num mundo onde o Metal frequentemente se socorre de vozes líricas e melodiosas, a aspereza de Jill é certamente bem-vinda.

Agora... quem me dera que todo o álbum fosse tão intenso e memorável quanto "Eight Of Swords". Ainda assim, não sendo, "Spell Eater" é do início ao fim um exercício de força e agressão que deixará convencidos os fãs de Power Metal versão Americana com uma componente fortíssima de Thrash. Temas como "Night Rape" e "Aradia" ou "Snow Witch" são a definição de demolidores. Os instrumentais são impiedosos, Jill Janus, uma valquíria imponente, excelente mistura para um álbum brutal. Afinal, quem me dera que metade dos vocalistas masculinos conseguisse colocar em cada tema a adrenalina que Jill imprime.

É certo que ao fim de algum tempo, a música parece sofrer de alguma repetição, mas em sua defesa tem a inércia de um comboio desgovernado e não vai simplesmente parar. Assim, torna-se viciante e irresistível, mesmo que não totalmente arrebatador. Contas feitas, fico de pé atrás à espera de perceber quanto desta banda é a sério, e quanto é um gimmick, mas "Spell Eater" é não obstante uma estreia louvável e um álbum cortante para todos os adeptos de metal electrizante.

Huntress - "Spell Eater"

Hailing from California, Huntress debuts with "Spell Eater" through Napalm Records, which is something worthy of praise. Plus, there has been quite a lot of noise around this supposedly new formula, of having a red hot female handling the vocals, as if the average Metal fan was craving for hot chicks (shut up, now). In cases such as these, you'll easily shoot yourself in the foot and otherwise talented bands will be tossed into the bin as yet another attempt to cash in on having an attractive female singer. So, the question is: do all the expectations get fulfilled?

The single "Eight Of Swords" was certainly a very clear indication of what the album had in store for us, typical traditional US Metal with lots of aggression and Jill Janus impressing with the might and ferocity of her lungs. In a world where Heavy Metal frequently uses lyrical and gentle vocals, Jill's harshness is most welcome.

Now... I only wish that all the songs here were as intense and memorable as "Eight Of Swords". Even so, and while they are not, "Spell Eater" is from tip to toe a tour de force and aggression that will win you over if you're a fan of US Power Metal with a strong thrash component. Songs such as "Night Rape" and "Aradia" or "Snow Witch" are the definition of crushing. Instrumentals are relentless, Jill Janus a terrific Valkyrie, the perfect mix for a brutal album. In fact, I wish half the male vocals in Metal could press into each song the kind of stamina Jill delivers.

It's certain that after a while, the songs feel somewhat repetitive, but in the album's defense, it has the inertia of a runaway train and it simply won't stop. So, it becomes rather addictive and irresistible, even if not completely overwhelming. All things considered, I'll wait and see if this band is for real or a gimmick, but regardless of that, "Spell Eater" is a commendable debut and a soaring album for all fans of Metal.
