ROCK HEAVY LOUD - Entrevista Lions Share

Os SHADOWSIDE são o reflexo de um Brasil cujo panorama metálico se encontra em franco desenvolvimento com o surgimento de novas e promissoras bandas. Oriundos de Santos, os SHADOWSIDE são um quarteto em torno da talentosa Dani Nolden, e produzem um energético e poderoso Heavy-Metal que não deixa de lembrar os seus congéneres Norte-Americanos dos BENEDICTUM. “Theatre of Shadows” é o seu álbum de estreia de 2005 e já garantiu prémios internacionais à banda que o tem apoiado em palco com actuações bem recebidas pelo público. Em Novembro, o álbum receberá um muito merecido lançamento mundial, incluindo na Europa, e foi nesta fase importante da carreira dos Brasileiros que a Rock Heavy Loud os encontrou para um entrevista exclusiva para os seus leitores.

1-Rock Heavy Loud – Seja bem-vinda ao site Rock Heavy Loud de Portugal, obrigado por aceitar o convite para a entrevista.
Dani: É um prazer! O site é excelente, fico feliz por ter a oportunidade de participar do trabalho.

2 – RHL – “Warning: Explicit Heavy Metal” é a identidade dos Shadowside?
Dani: Sem dúvida isso descreve com extrema precisão o que é Shadowside. Energia, atitude, paixão e força são coisas que imediatamente são associadas ao Heavy Metal e essas são nossas principais características. Se você procura algo calmo, pode passar bem longe de nós. Somos exactamente isso: explicitamente Heavy Metal!

3 – RHL – Conte aos fãs em Portugal qual significado do nome Shadowside?
Dani: Todas as pessoas escondem algo, todos nós temos um 'Shadowside'. Não necessariamente coisas ruins, muitas pessoas escondem bons sentimentos e atitudes apenas por medo de serem vistas como fracas, o que é uma pena. Mas a ideia é a de que o 'Shadowside' está por toda parte. Não há como se esconder ou ignorá-lo. Ame ou odeie, mas você vai saber que ele está lá.

4 – RHL – Os Shadowside começaram como quinteto e hoje em dia são quarteto. Podes comentar sobre essa transformação?
Dani: Isso foi algo bem natural, na verdade. Num ensaio em que um de nossos guitarristas não estava presente, comentei como havia gostado do som com apenas uma guitarra; soava mais limpo, mas não menos pesado. Sempre acreditei que a única forma de trabalhar com dois guitarristas solo numa banda seria ter os dois completamente unidos, como uma equipa, um completando o outro e não em uma eterna competição para ver quem aparece mais ou sola melhor. Isso é algo muito difícil de atingir e honestamente, eu não queria tentar de novo. Se algum dia encontrarmos alguém que se encaixe perfeitamente com a ideia da banda e a característica do Raphael, podemos até colocar mais um guitarrista, mas no momento, tudo está perfeito como está. O clima na banda nunca esteve tão bom e as ideias fluem perfeitamente. Simplesmente não sentimos a necessidade de mais um membro.

5 – RHL – Como foi para você assimilar sua maneira de cantar depois que os Shadowside passaram a ter um só guitarrista?
Dani: A minha forma de cantar não mudou, as porque nossas características principais também não mudaram. Continuamos os mesmos Shadowside intensos, pesados e energéticos, estamos apenas mais maduros e acredito que a banda evoluiu muito nos últimos meses. O Raphael apenas acrescentou ao grupo, mesmo sendo o único guitarrista. Ele é tão bom que faz barulho por dois (risos).

6 – RHL – Houve questões burocráticas que não valem a pena comentar, mas que causaram atrasos para o “Theatre of Shadows”. Porém, o álbum alcançou um enorme sucesso no Brasil e exterior. Conte como se sentiu com toda repercussão do Shadowside, alvo de uma unanimidade quase mundial?
Dani: Aliviada, agradecida e extremamente feliz. Realmente não vale a pena desenterrar problemas do passado, mas a situação que vivemos seria suficiente para acabar com 90% das bandas. Muitos grupos acabam no primeiro disco por problemas com editoras, na verdade. Mas nós sempre estivemos muito determinados e focados no que queríamos, então apesar de toda a dificuldade, conseguimos fazer com que o álbum finalmente fosse editado. Sempre tive um carinho muito especial por esse disco, claro, eu escuto-o e gosto dele até hoje, mas não imaginava que seríamos tão bem recebidos assim. Nós sempre acreditamos em nosso trabalho, mas você sempre vai gostar de sua própria música. Quando tantas pessoas gostam também, e com tanta intensidade, é maravilhoso e realmente não tenho do que reclamar. Temos apenas que agradecer por essa recepção absolutamente incrível.

7 – RHL – Você já tem bastante experiência nos mais diversos shows e palcos ao vivo, conte-nos como foi abrir para os Nightwish em 2002, Primal Fear em 2004 e Helloween em 2006?
Dani: Foram sensações indescritíveis, especialmente os shows com os Nightwish e Helloween. Com Nightwish foi especial porque foi o nosso primeiro show realmente grande, estávamos apenas a começar e iniciamo-nos com uma enorme responsabilidade. Éramos apenas adolescentes e não sabíamos o que esperar. As cenas daquela noite vão ficar gravadas na minha mente para sempre, afinal pela primeira vez estava a ver um público de 7000 pessoas a cantar as nossas músicas. Sempre ouvimos que o público de São Paulo é extremamente exigente com as bandas de abertura e o promotor disse-nos após a apresentação que nunca viu reacção tão positiva e calorosa da plateia com uma banda de apoio. Aquilo foi maravilhoso e um passo realmente importante na nossa carreira. Os shows com os Primal Fear também foram muito divertidos, mas fazer a digressão com Helloween teve um sabor especial por eles serem uma banda tão influente no mercado e que eu escutei muito. São hoje amigos e colegas de trabalho que teriam todos os motivos para terem nos tratado com arrogância, afinal eles estão há mais de 20 anos no activo e ainda fortes, enquanto nós estávamos apenas a começar. Mas desde o começo nos trataram de igual para igual, com respeito, simpatia e simplicidade. Esses caras são pessoas que eu admiro como músicos e como seres humanos.

8- RHL – A banda Shadowside ganhou o importante prémio do All Thing Digital Hard Rock Heavy Metal, uma competição de bandas promovida pelas empresas Air Play Direct, Vigilant Music, Inside Strategy. Podes falar sobre tão importante prémio?
Dani: Eu quase caí do sofá quando soube que vencemos (risos)! Eram centenas de bandas de todo o mundo, nunca imaginamos que uma banda Brasileira seria escolhida, por causa da distância. É muito complicado trabalhar uma banda que está a milhares de quilómetros de distância. Ainda assim, eles escolheram-nos e eu tenho muito a agradecer ao Robert da AirPlay Direct, não apenas pela competição mas também pelo excelente trabalho que ele faz pelas bandas. Esse prémio abriu-nos muitas portas e ajuda a levar nosso trabalho ainda mais longe, já que ele inclui pacotes de divulgação do disco pela Vigilante Music, que foi responsável por campanhas de promoção dos Vixen, WASP e Twisted Sister. Dessa forma, a versão internacional com o cover bonus de “Rainbow in the Dark” será divulgada muito bem na Europa, algo que não teríamos a possibilidade de fazer sozinhos.

9 – RHL – Com tão importante prémio, a banda apresentou-se no Indianapolis Metal Fest. Podes falar do concerto?
Dani: Inicialmente foi assustador... quando chegamos ao local do concerto, a pista estava completamente vazia! Acho que não mais que 10 pessoas estavam a assistir aos primeiros grupos e ficamos realmente desapontados, mas já que estávamos ali, tocaríamos da melhor forma possível e iríamos divertir-nos. Então, já conformados com a situação, subimos ao palco e tivemos a surpresa de ver o lugar completamente lotado! Não entendemos nada, mas claro que adoramos (risos). O show foi maravilhoso, devastador e o público reagiu de forma extremamente intensa, cantando, gritando e curtindo o tempo todo. Sempre nos disseram que os Americanos eram meio quietos e gostavam mais de assistir ao show que gritar, mas parece que não é o caso, eles são loucos de uma forma excelente. Apenas depois, já de volta ao Brasil, Bill da nossa gravadora norte-americana Chavis Records disse que o festival foi promovido com nosso nome, então muitas pessoas estavam lá para nos ver. Foi surpreendente, nós não tínhamos ideia de como estávamos indo nos Estados Unidos.

10 – RHL – Os Shadowside já se encontram em estúdio ao lado do renomado produtor norte-americano David Schiffman, que já trabalhou com System of a Down, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Audioslave, Anti-Flag, Avenged Sevenfold, Dave Navarro, Jane's Addiction, Jamiroquai, Moby, POD, Rage Agains the Machine, Type O' Negative, Sheryl Crowl e Alanis Morrisette, para a gravação do segundo álbum. Mais um desafio para todos integrantes, trabalhar com um profissional como David: como está a correr todo o processo?
Dani: (risos) Por onde hei-de começar?! Vou tentar resumir minhas impressões, desde o começo até agora. Quando comecei a conversar com o Dave sobre a produção, imaginei que ele seria o tipo de produtor que impõe as coisas e que age como um chefe, principalmente com esse currículo impressionante que ele tem. Além das bandas que você falou, ele ainda trabalhou com MUITOS outros artistas, como Ozzy, por exemplo. Mas o que está a acontecer é exactamente o contrário. Ele é ainda mais competente do que eu imaginava, mas não existe dificuldade alguma em trabalhar com ele. Não está a ser um desafio: ele torna tudo mais fácil de se fazer, na verdade. Ele faz com que tudo seja simples, rápido, além de ser completamente tranquilo, amigável e divertido. Estamos a fazer uma semana de pré-produção antes de entrar para a gravação definitiva e já sinto como se ele fosse o quinto membro da banda. É um profissional genial com uma excelente personalidade. Pela primeira vez na minha carreira, estou a chegar a casa depois de um dia de gravação completamente sem stress. Sinto-me como se tivesse acabado de voltar de um passeio na praia. Claro que sentimos o cansaço, mas não existe desgaste mental nem discussão.

11 – RHL – O próximo álbum já tem nome e previsão de lançamento?
Dani: Ainda não temos um nome, mas acredito que será lançado no primeiro semestre de 2008. Queremos lançar um single em Janeiro, provavelmente virtual, mas talvez postemos apenas algumas prévias das músicas para deixar todo o material para ser lançado por volta de Abril. Queremos que o “Theatre…” tenha a divulgação que merece, como ele está a ser relançado mundialmente em Novembro de 2007, não seria boa ideia atropelar os lançamentos, então vamos dar alguns meses de espaço entre os dois. Mas isso não significa que não vamos ter algumas surpresinhas nos concertos!

12 – RHL – Os fãs em Portugal podem esperar uma digressão pelo país?
Dani: Se depender de nós, com certeza! Não vemos a hora de tocar em Portugal, nós adoramos o país e não vemos a hora de conhecer e festejar com nossos fãs e amigos portugueses. Estamos à espera de um convite ansiosamente!

13 – RHL – Quero agradecer imensamente sua paciência e gentileza em atender ao pedido de entrevistar em sair das gravações do novo álbum. Suas considerações finais e mensagens aos fãs dos Shadowside?
Dani: Eu agradeço todo o carinho e apoio, vosso e dos fãs de Portugal, vocês são demais! Temos recebido muitos emails e mensagens no MySpace e estamos cada vez mais ansiosos para fazer a estreia em solo Português. Espero que gostem do novo álbum tanto quanto gostaram do Theatre: posso garantir que ele é ainda mais pesado e intenso, estamos a divertir-nos bastante ao trabalhar nele. Vejo-vos na estrada em breve!

SHADOWDISE are the reflex of a Brazil with a quick developing metal scene where new and promising bands are arising. Coming from Santos, SHADOWSIDE are a quartet formed around talented Dani Nolden and deliver an energetic and powerful Heavy-Metal that may remind a bit their American counterparts BENEDICTUM. “Theatre of Shadows” is their 2005 debut and has given the band some international prizes who has been supporting it on stage with very well received live performances. In November the album will receive a very deserved international release, Europe included, and it was at this crucial time of their career that Rock Heavy Loud met them for an exclusive interview.

1-Rock Heavy Loud – Welcome to the Rock Heavy Loud website from Portugal, thank you for accepting our request for an interview.
Dani: It’s a pleasure! The website is excellent, I’m happy to have the chance to be a part of it.

2 – RHL – “Warning: Explicit Heavy Metal” is it Shadowside’s identity?
Dani: Undoubtedly that describes with extreme precision what is Shadowside. Energy, attitude, passion and strength are things immediately associated with Heavy Metal and those are our main characteristics. If you’re looking for something calm, you can stay away from us. We’re exactly that: Explicitly Heavy Metal.

3 – RHL – Tell you fans what is the meaning of the name Shadowside.
Dani: Everybody hides something, we all have a “shadowside”. Not necessarily bad things, a lot of people do hide good feelings and attitudes for fear of being seen as weak, and that’s a shame. But the idea is that a shadowside exists everywhere. There’s no hiding or ignoring it. Love it or hate it, but you’ll know it’s there.

4 – RHL – Shadowside started as a quintet and nowadays you’re a quartet. Can you elaborate on that transformation?
Dani: That was something natural, actually. During a rehearsal in which one of our guitar players didn’t show up, I mentioned how I had enjoyed our sound with just one guitar. I always felt that the only way to work with two lead guitars in a band would be to have both completely united, like a team, one completing the other and not in a constant competition to see who shows up more or does better solos. That’s something very hard to get and honestly, I didn’t want to try it again. If someday we find someone that perfectly fits with the band’s idea and Raphael’s characteristics, we may even get an extra guitar player, but right now things are perfect the way they are. The atmosphere in the band was never better and ideas flow perfectly. We simply don’t need an extra player.

5 – RHL – How was it for you to adapt your way of singing after Shadowside were left with just one guitar player?
Dani: My way of singing didn’t change, because our main characteristics also didn’t. We’re still the same Shadowside, intense, heavy and energetic, just more mature and I believe the band evolved a lot in the past months. Raphael just added to the group, even being the only guitar player. He’s so good he makes noise for two (laughter).

6 – RHL – There were bureaucratic issues not worth mentioning but that delayed “Theatre of Shadows”. Still, the album achieved enormous success in Brazil and abroad. Tell us how you felt with all of Shadowside’s global repercussion.
Dani: Relieved, thankful and extremely happy. There’s really no point in unburying past problems, but the situation we lived would be enough to finish with 90% of the bands. A lot of bands die with the first album due to label problems, actually. But we were always determined and focused on what we wanted so, even with all difficulties, we managed to get the album released. I always had a very special love for this album, of course, I listen to it and I love it to this day. We always believed in our work, but you’ll always love your own music. When so many people also love it, and so intensely, it’s wonderful and I really have no complaints. We have to just be thankful for such an amazing reception.

7 – RHL – You have quite a live stage experience, tell us how it was to open for Nightwish in 2002, Primal Fear in 2004 and Helloween in 2006.
Dani: Those were indescribable sensation, especially the shows with Nightwish and Helloween. With Nightwish it was special because it was our first really big show, we were just starting and with an enormous responsibility. We were just teenagers and didn’t know what to expect. That night’s images will be forever engraved in my mind, after all, for the first time we were facing a crowd of 7000 singing along our songs. We had always heard that the public at São Paulo is extremely demanding for the opening acts and the promoter told us after the show that he had never seen such a positive and warm reaction from the crowd to a support band. That was marvelous and a really important step in our career. The shows with Primal Fear were also a lot of fun, but touring with Helloween had a very special flavor since they are such an influent band and one I’ve listened to a lot. Today they are friends and work colleagues that would have had every reason to treat us with arrogance, since they have been active for 20 years and still going strong, while we were just starting. But since the beginning they treated us with respect, politeness and simplicity. Those guys are people I admire a lot as musicians and as persons.
8- RHL – Shadowside has won the important prize that is All Thing Digital Hard Rock Heavy Metal, a band competition promoted by Air Play Direct, Vigilant Music, Inside Strategy. Can you tell us about such an important prize?
Dani: I almost fell off the couch when I knew we had won (laughter)! There were hundreds of bands from around the world, we never imagined a Brazilian band would get picked because of the distance. It’s very complicated to work with a band thousands of kilometers away. Even so, they chose us and I have a lot to thank for to Robert from AirPlay Direct, not only for the competition but also for the excellent work he did for the bands. That award opened us a lot of doors and helps take our work farther away, since it includes promotional packs through Vigilante Music, who have been responsible for promoting Vixen, WASP and Twisted Sister. That way, the international version with the cover bonus of “Rainbow in the Dark” will be well advertised in Europe, something we couldn’t do alone.

9 – RHL – With such an important award, the band presented itself at the Indianapolis Metal Fest. Can you talk about that concert?
Dani: Initially it was frightening… when we got to the concert the place was completely empty! I think no more than 10 people were watching the first bands and we were totally disappointed, but since we were there, we would play the best we could and have some fun. So, already comfortable with the situation, we went up on stage and were surprised by seeing the place sold out! W couldn’t understand it but of course we loved it (laughter). The show was wonderful, devastating and the audience reacted very intensely, singing, shouting and partying all the time. We have always been told Americans were kind of quiet and were more about watching the show than shouting, but I guess that’s not true, they’re mad in an excellent kind of way. Only after, already back at Brazil, Bill from our North American label Chavis Records told us the show had been promoted with our name, so many were there to see us. It was surprising, we had no idea of how we were progressing in the United States.

10 – RHL –Shadowside are already at the studio recording the follow-up album with renowned David Schiffman, who has worked with System of a Down, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Audioslave, Anti-Flag, Avenged Sevenfold, Dave Navarro, Jane's Addiction, Jamiroquai, Moby, POD, Rage Against the Machine, Type O' Negative, Sheryl Crowl and Alanis Morrisette. Another challenge for all the band members, to work with a Professional like David: how is the whole process going?
Dani: (laughter) Where should I start?! I’ll try to sum up my impressions from the beginning until now. When I began talking to Dave about the production, I thought he’d be the kind of producer who imposes things and acts like a boss, especially with his impressive curriculum. Besides the bands you mentioned, he also worked with many other artists like Ozzy, for example. But what’s happening is exactly the opposite. He is even more competent than what I imagined, but there’s no difficulty whatsoever in working with him. It’s not a challenging situation: he makes everything a lot easier to do, actually. He makes everything simple, fast, plus he’s absolutely calm, friendly and fun. We’re making a week of pre-production before going in for the definitive recording and I already fell like he’s a band member. He is a genius professional with an excellent personality. For the first time in my career, I’m getting home after a day of recording unstressed. I feel like I have just returned from a walk at the beach. Of course we get tired, but there’s no mental wearing out or arguing.

11 – RHL – Does your next álbum have a name and release date yet?
Dani: We still don’t have a name, but I believe it will be released during the first semester of 2008. We want to have a single out in January, probably online, but maybe we’ll just post some previews of the new songs and let all the material to be released around April. We want “Theatre…” to have the promotion it deserves, since it’s getting a worldwide launch during November 2007, so it wouldn’t be a good idea to have both releases so close, so we’re going to have a few months between the two. But that doesn’t mean we won’t have a few little surprises at our concerts!

12 – RHL – Can the Portuguese fans expect a tour in Portugal?
Dani: If it depends on us, of course! We can hardly wait to play in Portugal, we love the country and can’t wait to meet and celebrate with our Portuguese fans and friends. We’re anxiously waiting for an invitation!

13 – RHL – I want to thank you a lot for your patience and kindness to accept our request for an interview, interrupting the recordings of your new album. Final thoughts and messages to Shadowside fans?
Dani: I thank you all the love and support, yours and the Porguese fans, you’re too much! We’ve been getting a lot of emails and MySpace messages and we’re very anxious to debut in Portuguese soil. I hope you like the new album as much as you enjoyed “Theatre…”: I can assure you it’s even heavier and intense, we’re having a lot of fun working in it. See you on the road soon!
